The University of Chicago Press Hilma af Klint
Book SynopsisTrade Review“Despite her many notebooks, she left behind no personal diaries, and we know little about her thoughts beyond her art and spiritualist interests. Voss does a good job of filling in the gaps with detective work and speculation, although in places the conditional does a lot of heavy lifting. Her biggest achievement is to establish a context for af Klint’s work, upending popular assumptions that she was a mystical outsider who floated free of her historical and social milieu.” * London Review of Books *“Voss has produced an extraordinarily rich portrait of a radically unusual, but not eccentric, modern artist. . . . Voss’s biography makes af Klint so much more than an artist simply to be inserted into a more gender-inclusive canon of ‘abstract art’. It saves af Klint from art history while sending us deeper into her world. Reading it was a revelation, and it has changed my understanding of the artist, the woman, and her times.” * Literary Review *"It would be easy, in our rationalist times, to think of af Klint as a kook. One of the many praiseworthy things about Julia Voss’s excellent new biography of her is that it does not even entertain the thought." * Times Literary Supplement *"The woman who emerges in Voss's exacting portrait is strong-willed, purposeful, and confident—ahead of her time and perhaps ours too. What's interesting, the author suggests, isn't that af Klint, in a century awash with spiritual fads, heard voices. It's that, as far as her genius was concerned, those voices weren't wrong." * Observer (UK) *"Julia Voss’s biography of Af Klint is the first full life of the painter and shows her growth from working in the traditional genres of portraiture and landscape into far more radical fields. She explains not just Af Klint’s beliefs, but her relations with the occultist and reformer Rudolf Steiner and her efforts to exhibit some of her work to fellow spiritualists. Af Klint thought of her paintings as dictations from the astral plane. Voss’s scholarship shows how remarkable the woman was who transcribed them." * New Statesman *"[A] pioneering biography. . . . Voss marshals as much of the personal detail as the painter’s surviving notes would divulge and has filled out an account that will surely remain the standard for years to come." * Art Newspaper *"Julia Voss’s dazzling and timely biography of Hilma af Klint explores not only the life of this extraordinary artist but highlights the important contributions of both mysticism and women artists—so long excluded from the art-historical canon—to the story of modern art. I couldn’t put it down." -- Jennifer Higgie"Julia Voss’s biography is the indispensable resource for anyone interested in pioneering artist Hilma af Klint. With her thousands of pages of notebooks in Swedish, af Klint remained beyond the reach of scholars without the ability to read Swedish. By mastering Swedish and doing superb archival research on af Klint and the women around her, Voss reveals a Hilma we did not know, including a gender fluidity that underlies many of her motifs. Voss has also recovered the cosmopolitan culture of Stockholm in this period—from art exhibitions and science expositions to the robust interest in spiritualism that parallels that in Berlin. Written in lively prose, Voss’s book is a pleasure to read in the translation by Anne Posten." -- Linda Henderson, University of Texas at Austin"A fascinating book on the exhilarating life and work of Hilma af Klint. Julia Voss has been instrumental in bringing her story to the forefront and tells her life with such sensitivity, generosity, and insight. A must read!" -- Katy Hessel, author of The Story of Art without Men"As well as shining a light on an exceptional talent, this book provides a rare window on the struggle of a woman artist to find a new language in a world where idealism was fading fast." * World of Interiors *"A rich and illuminating portrait of the artist." * Air Mail *Table of ContentsA Note from the Translator Chronology Introduction Part I. Book SynopsisThis anthology is remarkable not only for the selections themselves, among which the Schelling and the Heidegger essays were translated especially for this volume, but also for the editors' general introduction and the introductory essays for each selection, which make this volume an invaluable aid to the study of the powerful, recurrent ideas concerning art, beauty, critical method, and the nature of representation. Because this collection makes clear the ways in which the philosophy of art relates to and is part of general philosophical positions, it will be an essential sourcebook to students of philosophy, art history, and literary criticism.

The University of Chicago Press Nonliterary Fiction Art of the Americas under
Book SynopsisExplores a new form of fiction that emerged in late-twentieth-century visual art across the Americas. With Non-literary Fiction, Esther Gabara examines how contemporary art produced across the Americas has reacted to the rising tide of neoliberal regimes, focusing on the crucial role of fiction in daily politics. Gabara argues that these fictions depart from familiar literary narrative structures and emerge in the new mediums and practices that have revolutionized contemporary art. Each chapter details how fiction is created through visual art formsin performance and body art, posters, mail art, found objects, and installations. For Gabara, these fictions comprise a type of art that asks viewers to collaborate in the creation of the work and helps them to withstand the brutal restrictions imposed by dominant neoliberal regimes. During repressive regimes of the 1960s and 1970s and free trade agreements of the 1990s, artists and critics consistently said no to economic privatization, political deregulation, and reactionary social logic as they rejected inherited notions of visual, literary, and political representation. Through close analyses of artworks and writings by leading figures of these two generations, including Indigenous thinkers, Gabara shows how negation allows for the creation of fiction outside textual forms of literature. Trade Review"Gabara’s thoughtful intervention will be of interest to scholars in the visual arts, cultural, literary and media studies. It demonstrates the contemporaneity and contributions of Amerindian thought to canonical artistic practices, shedding light on how the latter may or may not allegorically negate neoliberal transformations, by way of collaborative inventions or non-literary fictions that blur the distinction between the literary and the visual." * Visual Studies *"Gabara takes us into an erudite exploration to answer what seems to be a simple, straightforward question: what is fiction in art? How are works of art fictions? The answer unfolds in five chapters, an introduction, and an epilogue in which the author composes a theory of visual fiction, devoid of the narrative conventions that typically dominate discussions on the matter from both literary and art historical perspectives." * Hispanic Review *“Gabara’s powerful critical lens is as broad as the Americas and as precise as a single performance or found object. Non-literary Fiction is a major contribution to our understanding of how art refutes the neoliberal Thatcherism ‘There is no alternative.’ Gabara’s extraordinary study shows there is always an alternative.” -- Diana Taylor, New York University“Gabara presents a compellingly hemispheric case for non-literary fiction, negation, and Amerindian thought as central to a distinctive turn in artistic practice since the late 1950s. This tour de force is a must-read for anyone interested in new critical terms for studying how artistic form and thought have engaged the violence of a prevailing social order.” -- Chon Noriega, Distinguished Professor, UCLATable of ContentsList of Figures Negating: An Introduction Chapter One. Book SynopsisHow artists at the turn of the twentieth century broke with traditional ways of posing the bodies of human figures to reflect modern understandings of human consciousness. Trade Review"Butterfield-Rosen's strategy of examining the disposition of poses in order to contribute to histories of the self is nothing short of a brilliant, and her discussion of the trafficking between abstract concepts and concrete practices is rigorous, original, and convincing. This is an area in which the discipline of art history is in a privileged position to contribute to a broader history of ideas, and she makes skillful use of the weapons in an art historian's arsenal, including formal and iconographic analysis." --Zeynep Celik Alexander, author of Kinaesthetic Knowing: Aesthetics, Epistemology, Modern Design "Modern Art and the Remaking of Human Disposition is original, creative, erudite, soundly argued, and convincingly substantiated. Oxford University Press The Letters of Hildegard of Bingen The Letters of Hildegard of Bingen
Book SynopsisThis is the second volume in what will be a translation with full scholarly apparatus of the entire correspondence of St. Hildegard of Bingen (1098-1179). The translation follows Van Acker''s definitive new edition of the Latin text, which is being published serially in Belgium by Brepols. As in that edition, the letters are organized according to the rank of the addressees. The first volume included ninety letters to and from the highest ranking prelates in Hildegard''s world: popes, archbishops, and bishops. Volume II comprises letters 91-217, in which Hildegard addresses lower-ranking spiritual leaders (abbots and abbesses, for the most part) offering advice and consolation, and is particularly noteworthy for the correspondence with Guilbert of Gembloux, who provides a wealth of information about the saint and her spiritual gift.Trade ReviewThe two already published volumes are exemplary. The translations read well, the notes are helpful, and the brief bibliography and indexes enhance the readability of the text. * Commonweal *The appearance of the second volume of translations of Hildegard's letters...is an event to be welcomed. It makes accessible, in readable and accurate translations, another tranche of Hildegard's correspondence. * Catholic Historical Review *

Book SynopsisFrom the dawn of time, ever since Adam and Eve, all artists of every age—whether the Egyptian, Greek, or Roman artists of Antiquity, or more recent famous names such as Rembrandt, Courbet, Degas, or Picasso—have succumbed to their fantasies, obsessions, and libido and produced erotic works that the censors have taken good care to keep from the public. For Erotica Universalis, we surface from the subterranean realms of the museums to enter those of our national and private libraries. Here we discover that not only most of our famous writers, such as Ovid, Aretino, Voltaire, Verlaine, or Maupassant, wrote erotic texts that bordered on indecency, but also that great artists like Boucher, Fragonard, Dalí, or Matisse were inspired to provide suitable illustrations for these naughty books. For this new hardcover edition of the classic 1995 best seller, we have culled highlights from our Erotica Universalis collection.Trade Review“Icons—from Egypt’s Golden Empire to present day—with a knack for translating sexual fantasies into master works of art.” * The Huffington Post *“…it’s possibly the only place you’ll see Rembrandt alongside Robert Crumb, and expert editing means the collection never strays into the predictable Erotic Print Society territory.” * Arena *“It's tasteful in an arty kind of way, which means you won't have to endure red-hot cheeks at the checkout counter. The University of Chicago Press Theory of Form
Book SynopsisA pragmatist conception of artistic form, through a study of the painter Gerhard Richter. In this study of the practice of contemporary painter Gerhard Richter, Florian Klinger proposes a fundamental change in the way we think about art today. In reaction to the exhaustion of the modernist-postmodernist paradigm's negotiation of the essence of art, he takes Richter to pursue a pragmatist model that understands artistic form as action. Here form is no longer conceived according to what it saysas a vehicle of expression, representation, or realization of something other than itselfbut strictly according to what it does. Through its doing, Klinger argues, artistic form is not only more real but also more shared than non-artistic reality, and thus enables interaction under conditions where it would otherwise not be possible. It is a human practice aimed at testing and transforming the limits of shared reality, urgently needed in situations where such reality breaks down or turns precarious. Drawing on pragmatist thought, philosophical aesthetics, and art history, Klinger's account of Richter's practice offers a highly distinctive conceptual alternative for contemporary art in general. Trade Review“In this extraordinarily illuminating book, Klinger builds on a painstaking consideration of Richter’s artistic practice to derive a pragmatist theory of artistic form and of form’s ultimate purpose. In addition to its exciting philosophical and art historical interventions, Klinger’s analysis delineates a practical ethics of art-making that deserves to be read by anyone interested in the theory and practice of art in today’s crisis of world-sharing.” -- Whitney Davis, University of California at Berkeley “Theory of Form is a twofold triumph: it presents the most original study of Richter’s aesthetics in recent years, and it is also a groundbreaking contribution to theorizing contemporary art. Remarkably linking form to reaction, judgment, and transformation, it is essential reading for anyone interested in art’s capacity to profoundly touch us and to partake in shaping our world.” -- Amir Eshel, author of Poetic Thinking Today“Klinger’s Theory of Form combines astute philosophical thought with a fascinating close analysis of Richter’s practice, yielding a new understanding of historical time and contemporaneity. It raises the theory of form to another level – indeed, it makes one see how form in art ought to be thought today.” -- Rahel Villinger, author of Kant und die Imagination der Tiere (Kant and the Imagination of Animals)Table of ContentsI Response to a Contemporary Challenge II Morphological Question: Form as Reaction III Poetological Question: Form as Judgment IV Eschatological Question: Form as Transformation V Form as Paradigm? P. Blackmur has called the most sustained and I think the most eloquent and original piece of literary criticism in existence; his studies of Hawthorne, George Eliot, Balzac, Zola, de Maupassant, Turgenev, Sante-Beuve, and Arnold; and his essays on the function of criticism and the future of the novel. The editors have provided what James himself emphasized in his literary criticismthe text's context. Each selection is framed by an editorial commentary and notes which give its biographical, bibliographical, and critical background and cite other references in James' work to the topic discussed. This framework, along with the editors' introduction, gives the reader a sense of the place of these pieces in the history of criticism.

The University of Chicago Press The Pensive Image
Book SynopsisTrade Review"What does it mean to say a painting thinks? The central claim of this invigorating book is not that a painting can show thought happening, as in depictions of melancholics musing, head on hand; nor that it can illustrate philosophical concepts. Nor does Hanneke Grootenboer want to argue that a painting is a way of working out a philosophical conundrum; nor even that it can prompt theorisation about the nature of reality, artifice and representation. She argues, instead, for something weirder–and more suggestive. . . . she asks: 'Do we, as viewers, find ourselves pondering these things, or is the painting as such pensive?' Grootenboer wants to affirm the latter." -- Kathryn Murphy * Apollo *"Ideas in Grootenboer’s sense are arresting, Benjaminian, and, therefore, fit for the still medium of painting, where, in her beautiful examples, they crystallize into dangling ribbons, inverted flowers, sliding dewdrops, and teetering gooseberries. . . . Though this book is full of beauty and pleasure, the adjective “pensive” is not, finally, the happiest to attach to the thinking subject—a person or work of art. In Grootenboer’s own words, the pensive image gives rise to an 'uneasy and indeterminate state of openness that allows for the unthought to surface.' As such, the pensive image extends an invitation to take a hard look at things." -- Amy Knight Powell * CAA Reviews *"This deeply thoughtful and compact book, like a self-aware image, also stimulates in its own right, prompting a reader toward unpredictable, wide-ranging pathways during engagement with it. Every sentence, every reference, gives pause, leading to other thoughts or thinkers about art, including contemporary art." -- Larry Silver * Sixteenth Century Journal *"Grootenboer opens up innumerable possible directions in which the reader’s mind could fruitfully err, juxtaposing different viewpoints and insights whose encounters incessantly ignite exciting intellectual sparks . . . one is then mesmerized by the exquisite profundity of some paintings, by the beauty of thinking crystallized into images and then 'melting' once again into a stream of contemplation, and by the lofty level of thinking attained through the collaboration, over centuries and continents, between a few brilliant artists and an attentive, insightful viewer who chose to work as an art historian, transforming visual thought into fine discursive language." -- Itay Sapir * Inquiries into Art, Art History, and the Visual *“Grootenboer’s book provides an accessible, clear, and innovating means of thinking about being by revealing a new philosophical subject: artworks.” * Phenomenological Reviews *“Is there a kind of thinking that painting, or photography, can do, which ‘thinking in words’ cannot? What kind of realm do viewers enter when they go somewhere with an image? Are there pictures that are especially good to think with? These are the questions of Grootenboer’s unflinching, generous book, and her conclusion is pungent: ‘Philosophy . . . needs art to say what it cannot say.’” -- T. J. Clark, author of Heaven on Earth: Painting and the Life to Come“Thinking with Grootenboer is an unequivocal delight. The Pensive Image recuperates the vibrant invitations to contemplate and reflect that lurk in the quiet corners of Dutch art. Grootenboer’s philosophical insight and deft eye for the unexamined detail meld in a book that is refreshingly original and truly engaging at every turn.” -- Marisa Bass, author of Insect Artifice: Nature and Art in the Dutch Revolt“It’s wonderful to finally have this book. For nearly a century now, the history and philosophy of art have been gathering ideas about how pictures seem to embody thought, rather than simply announce narratives or messages. The literature on this subject is bewilderingly diverse, and this is the first book to bring together compatible insights from writers as diverse as Diderot, Winckelmann, Merleau-Ponty, Heidegger, Damisch, Deleuze, Clark, Rancière, Marin, Mitchell, and Barthes. The result is a coherent account of the thought that sounds in ‘stilled images’ of all kinds.” -- James Elkins, coauthor of Visual Worlds: Looking, Images, Visual DisciplinesTable of ContentsArt as a Form of Thinking Part I | Defining the Pensive Image Chapter 1 | Theorizing Stillness Chapter 2 | Tracing the Denkbild Part II | Painting as Philosophical Reflection Chapter 3 | Room for Reflection: Interior and Interiority Chapter 4 | The Profundity of Still Life Chapter 5 |Painting as a Space for Thought Painting’s Wonder Acknowledgments Notes Bibliography Index

The Catholic University of America Press A Model for the Christian Life
Book SynopsisTrade Review“This work offers the most complete examination of Hilary’s mature thought in any language. There are books on Hilary’s Trinitarian theology, but none that considers the way Hilary conceives the Christian life, nor how he developed theologically and pastorally after his exile. Although scholars have long had a sense that Hilary was important to the course of Latin theology, this book is the first to suggest how and why he was so important. A first-rate work of scholarship.”—Mark Weedman, professor of biblical and historical theology, Crossroads College

Book SynopsisAs a stylist, in his descriptions of art and movements and books, Rosenberg has no equal. . . . One is grateful for [this] essay collection. To my mind, his piece on art criticism and the distinction between it and art history is alone worth the price of the book. Corinne Robins, New York Times Book Review

The University of Chicago Press The Great Cat and Dog Massacre The Real Story of
Book SynopsisThe tragedies of World War II are well known. But at least one has been forgotten: in September 1939, four hundred thousand cats and dogs were massacred in Britain. The government, vets, and animal charities all advised against this killing. So why would thousands of British citizens line up to voluntarily euthanize household pets? In The Great Cat and Dog Massacre, Hilda Kean unearths the history, piecing together the compelling story of the life and death of Britain's wartime animal companions. She explains that fear of imminent Nazi bombing and the desire to do something to prepare for war led Britons to sew blackout curtains, dig up flower beds for vegetable patches, send their children away to the countryside and kill the family pet, in theory sparing them the suffering of a bombing raid. Kean's narrative is gripping, unfolding through stories of shared experiences of bombing, food restrictions, sheltering, and mutual support. Soon pets became key to the war effort, providing emot

The University of Chicago Press Spiral Jetta A Road Trip through the Land Art of
Book SynopsisErin Hogan hit the road in her Volkswagen Jetta and headed west from Chicago in search of the monuments of American land art. Her journey took her through the states of Utah, Nevada, New Mexico, Arizona, and Texas. It also took her through the states of anxiety, drunkenness, and heat exhaustion. This title presents a chronicle of this journey.Trade Review"The reader emerges enlightened and even delighted.... Casually scrutinizing the artistic works... while gamely playing up her fish-out-of-water status, Hogan delivers an ingeniously engaging travelogue-cum-art history." - Atlantic "Smart and unexpectedly hilarious." - Kevin Nance, Chicago Sun-Times "One of the funniest and most entertaining road trips to be published in quite some time." - June Sawyers, Chicago Tribune "Hogan ruminates on how the work affects our sense of time, space, size, and scale. She is at her best when she reexamines the precepts of modernism in the changing light of New Mexico, and shows how the human body is meant to be a participant in these grand constructions." - New Yorker "I was never quite sure what Hogan was looking for when she set out... or indeed whether she found it. But I loved the ride. In Spiral Jetta, an unshamedly honest, slyly uproarious, ever-probing book, art doesn't magically have the power to change lives, but it can, perhaps no less powerfully, change ways of seeing." - Tom Vanderbilt, New York Times Book Review"
