The University of Chicago Press The Ethics of Oneness Emerson Whitman and the
Book SynopsisWe live in an era defined by a sense of separation, even in the midst of networked connectivity. As cultural climates sour and divisive political structures spread, we are left wondering about our ties to each other. Consequently, there is no better time than now to reconsider ideas of unity. In The Ethics of Oneness, Jeremy David Engels reads the Bhagavad Gita alongside the works of American thinkers Ralph Waldo Emerson and Walt Whitman. Drawing on this rich combination of traditions, Engels presents the notion that individuals are fundamentally interconnected in their shared divinity. In other words, everything is one. If the lessons of oneness are taken to heart, particularly as they were expressed and celebrated by Whitman, and the ethical challenges of oneness considered seriously, Engels thinks it is possible to counter the pervasive and problematic American ideals of hierarchy, exclusion, violence, and domination. Trade Review“I learned something new and exciting on virtually every page of The Ethics of Oneness. Engels doesn’t just reveal and analyze the India-Emerson-Whitman connections, he situates them where they matter the most: in everyday life at a time when the revelation of Oneness is desperately needed. At a time when diversity is celebrated by some and weaponized by others, apprehending the Unity within and beyond that diversity is an essential task for humanity. By demonstrating that Oneness is as American as it is Eastern—and profoundly democratic at that—this book makes a contribution more valuable than the currency on which E pluribus unum is engraved.” -- Philip Goldberg, author of American Veda and Spiritual Practice for Crazy Times"The appeal to ‘oneness’ is regularly and dangerously mistaken for an appeal to absolute order, to strict unity, to lockstep cohesion. The Ethics of Oneness disabuses us of this confusion. Engels shows his readers how nineteenth-century-American thinkers responded to the fracturing of their political world and the tearing of the country’s social fabric by developing a philosophy of oneness—fluid, transcendent, and spiritual—that stood against the forces of exclusion and domination which jeopardized modern life. This is a philosophy that is all but forgotten today, which is to say that Engels has written an essential book for our time. We stand in need of his reminder." -- John Kaag, author of Hiking with Nietzsche and Sick Souls, Healthy Minds: How William James Can Save Your Life"There is much to love about this book, particularly the fact that it has a lot to offer a number of audiences, both academic and non-academic.Its greatest contribution to academic and public discourse is its account of communication as yoga, a uniquely U.S. American form of yoga. It enriches our understanding of yoga and its history in the U.S., it enriches our understanding of Emerson’s and Whitman’s philosophies by offering a new mode of approach to them, and it develops two ethical worldviews that have remained somewhat underdeveloped. This, of course, merely scratches the surface. Overall, I think Engels's book is a masterclass in public-facing academic philosophy." * Philosophy East and West *"Engels does a masterful job of showing us how these two great nineteenth-century philosophers—one a mystical poet, the other a prolific essayist—created new ways of looking at early American life from the point of view of Eastern spiritual traditions." * Quest *"The Ethics of Oneness is a fascinating book about the early reception of yoga in the United states and its significance for contemporary democratic practice. Written by a scholar of rhetoric, the book is an extended analysis of the place of the Bhagavad Gita in the ethical thought of nineteenth-century US authors Ralph Waldo Emerson and Walt Whitman. . . . I welcome Engels’s invitation to pay deeper attention to the cross-national influences coursing through the social practice of democracy in all its contexts." * American Religion *

Oxford University Press Better Never to Have Been
Book SynopsisMost people believe that they were either benefited or at least not harmed by being brought into existence. Thus, if they ever do reflect on whether they should bring others into existence---rather than having children without even thinking about whether they should---they presume that they do them no harm. Better Never to Have Been challenges these assumptions. David Benatar argues that coming into existence is always a serious harm. Although the good things in one''s life make one''s life go better than it otherwise would have gone, one could not have been deprived by their absence if one had not existed. Those who never exist cannot be deprived. However, by coming into existence one does suffer quite serious harms that could not have befallen one had one not come into existence. Drawing on the relevant psychological literature, the author shows that there are a number of well-documented features of human psychology that explain why people systematically overestimate the quality of their lives and why they are thus resistant to the suggestion that they were seriously harmed by being brought into existence. The author then argues for the ''anti-natal'' view---that it is always wrong to have children---and he shows that combining the anti-natal view with common pro-choice views about foetal moral status yield a ''pro-death'' view about abortion (at the earlier stages of gestation). Anti-natalism also implies that it would be better if humanity became extinct. Although counter-intuitive for many, that implication is defended, not least by showing that it solves many conundrums of moral theory about population.Trade ReviewThis isn't a new book, but it is generating increasing discussion in university departments and elsewhere: hence this review... If you enjoy an ethical challenge, then read this book. * Malcolm Torry, Triple Helix *For those who admire really careful and imaginative argumentation, and are interested in either issues of life and death, or the foundations of morality, it's a must read * Harry Brighouse, Out of the Crooked Timber *Benatar's discussion is clear and intelligent. * Yujin Nagasawa MIND *Table of Contents1. The University of Chicago Press The Obligation Mosaic
Book SynopsisMany argue that civic duty explains why Americans engage in politics, but what does civic duty mean, and does it mean the same thing across communities? Why are people from marginalized social groups often more likely than their more privileged counterparts to participate in high-cost political activities? In The Obligation Mosaic, Allison P. Anoll shows that the obligations that bring people into the political worldor encourage them to stay awayvary systematically by race in the United States, with broad consequences for representation. Drawing on a rich mix of interviews, surveys, and experiments with Asian, Black, Latino, and White Americans, the book uncovers two common norms that centrally define concepts of obligation: honoring ancestors and helping those in need. Whether these norms lead different groups to politics depends on distinct racial histories and continued patterns of segregation. Anoll's findings not only help to explain patterns of participation but also provide a Trade Review“The Obligation Mosaic is a clearly written, thoroughly researched book that provides valuable insight into our understanding of political participation. It offers answers to questions that have challenged the field of political science for decades while breaking new ground in the topics and methods of political participation research.” -- Katherine J. Cramer, University of Wisconsin–Madison“Every few years, a new book comes along that reorients your understanding of a topic you care about deeply. The Obligation Mosaic is such a book. Two broad features make this imaginative work a must-have for scholars of American political behavior. First, Anoll injects much-needed nuance and range into the study of group norms and how they condition what our collective identities mean and why they matter for mass politics. Second, Anoll breaks new conceptual ground on the connection between group norms and group identities, and what she has to say is relevant to those who study intra- and intergroup politics in the US and beyond. This book is simply remarkable in its approach to building a theory that can apply to multiple racial and ethnic groups while using the same moving parts.” -- Efrén O. Pérez, University of California, Los Angeles"It has long been clear that some canonical research on voting behavior is inadequate for explaining the participation of non-white populations. Anoll clarifies this point with her study of the influence of social norms on behavior, showing how their effects vary across ethnoracial groups . . . This work is an impressive analysis that provides valuable new insights into the causes of participation differences across ethnoracial groups." * Choice *

Book SynopsisWhat is the relationship between intelligence and sex? In this title, the author enters this historical debate by recalling the debate between Lewis Terman - the intellect who championed the testing of intelligence - and pioneering sex researcher Alfred Kinsey, and shows how intelligence and sexuality have interacted in American psychology.Trade Review"Peter Hegarty is the first scholar to examine seriously and systematically the connections between the discourses of intelligence and sexuality, both of which were being refashioned in important ways in the United States. Emmaus Academic Summa Contra Gentiles Books I II
Book SynopsisThe Summa Contra Gentiles is the second of Thomas Aquinas's three great theological syntheses, written after his Commentary on the Sentences of Peter Lombard and before his Summa Theologiae. The Summa Contra Gentiles is commonly thought to be composed with a missionary intention, possibly for the use of Thomas's brethren in their work of explaining the faith to non-Christians, especially Muslims in Spain. This volume contains the first and second books of the Summa Contra Gentiles. Book 1 treats of God in himself as reason can know him. Book 2 deals with God's work of creation from the perspective of what can be known on the basis of human reason.

Book SynopsisCrossing over the Line describes the folly of the Mann Act of 1910a United States law which made travel from one state to another by a man and a woman with the intent of committing an immoral act a major crime. Spawned by a national wave of white slave trade hysteria, the Act was created by the Congress of the United States as a weapon against forced prostitution. This book is the first history of the Mann Act's often bizarre career, from its passage to the amendment that finally laid it low. In David J. Langum's hands, the story of the Act becomes an entertaining cautionary tale about the folly of legislating private morality. Langum recounts the colorful details of numerous court cases to show how enforcement of the Act mirrored changes in America's social attitudes. Federal prosecutors became masters in the selective use of the Act: against political opponents of the government, like Charlie Chaplin; against individuals who eluded other criminal charges, like the Capone mobster Ma
