Book SynopsisEnter a world of ancient secrets, old money, new ambitions and the discovery of priceless treasure in this revelatory new biography.Between November 1922 and spring 1923, a door to the ancient Egyptian world was opened. The discovery of the tomb of Tutankhamun would be the most astonishing archaeological find of the century, revealing not only the boy pharaoh's preserved remains, but thousands of finely crafted objects, from the iconic gold mask and coffins to a dagger made from meteorite, chalices, beautiful furniture and even 3000-year-old food and wine. The world's understanding of Ancient Egyptian civilisation was immeasurably enhanced, and the quantity and richness of the objects in the tomb is still being studied today. Two men were ultimately responsible for the discovery: Lord Carnarvon and Howard Carter. It was Lord Carnarvon who held the concession to excavate and whose passion and ability to finance the project allowed the eventual discovery to take place. The Earl and the PhTrade Review Early praise for the The Earl and the Pharaoh ‘The story of their quest for the tomb of an obscure pharaoh is familiar but still exciting, and the countess tells it well, conjuring up the fights, the frustrations, the times when Carnarvon came close to cutting his losses and giving up, and the moment in November 1922 when Carter held his candle up to a hole in the wall of Tutankhamun’s tomb and in answer to Carnarvon’s question, “Can you see anything?” answered, “Yes, wonderful things”… Carnarvon’s life makes a good story, with plenty of Downton-esque period details’ Daily Telegraph Praise for the Countess of Carnarvon’s previous works 'Bright, breezy and unpretentious'Guardian ‘If you can’t wait for the new season of Downton Abbey … this one’s for you … A revealing portrait of the changing times’New York Post ‘[A] fascinating insight into how the seriously rich once lived’Newsweek Daily Beast ‘Lady Carnarvon's narrative is a vivid time-stamp of a tempestuous period in history, aptly incorporating its political situation and social structure, to satisfy history buffs’Publishers Weekly

Birlinn General The Northern Earldoms: Orkney and Caithness from
Book SynopsisThe medieval earldoms of Orkney and Caithness were positioned between two worlds, the Norwegian and the Scottish. They were a maritime lordship divided, or united, by the turbulent waters of the Pentland Firth. This unlikely combination of island and mainland territory survived as a single lordship for 600 years, against the odds. Growing out of the Viking maelstrom of the early Middle Ages, it became an established and wealthy principality which dominated northern waters, with a renowned dynasty of earls. Despite their peripheral location these earls were fully in touch with the kingdoms of Norway and Scotland and increasingly subject to the rulers of these kingdoms. How they maintained their independence and how they survived the clash of loyalties are themes explored in this book from the early Viking age to the late medieval era when the powerful feudal Sinclair earls ruled the islands and regained possession of Caithness. This is a story of the time when the Northern Isles of Scotland were part of a different national entity which explains the background to the non-Gaelic culture of this locality, when links across the North Sea were as important as links with the kingdom of Scotland to the south.Trade Review'One of the finest monographs available for any Scottish region in the medieval period' -- Neill McGuigan * Scottish Archaeological Journal *

Book Synopsis From award-winning author Phil Earle comes the hilariously agonising account of one teenage boy’s disastrous attempts to win the heart of the cool new girl at school. Marv’s fourteen and his life is simple. There’s football. And his best mate, Jimmy. Perfect. Nothing else matters until a new girl at school called Carly crashes into his life. For Marv, it’s love at first sight, his emotions flipped upside down, as he knows a girl like Carly will never notice him. He needs help – lots of it – but when it miraculously arrives in the shape of a musical idol from the past, the path to Carly’s heart proves anything but easy … First love is unforgettable, and poor Marv is about to learn this the hard way – him, and his northern soul …Trade Review"A sweet and touching tale pitched firmly at boys of an awkward age … crashes and burns in amusing ways that sit somewhere on the teenage cringe scale between Adrian Mole and The Inbetweeners … Redding's appearance gives the story a brilliantly irreverent edge." – The Times "Earle is brilliant at capturing the excruciating realities of a teenage crush" – The Telegraph “Delightfully, toe-curlingly cringe for any teen who’s ever felt useless around their crush. Hilarious and heart-warming” – Holly Bourne “A brilliantly funny and achingly real story that perfectly captures the life of a teenage boy in all of its awkward, cringy glory. I absolutely loved it!” – Simon James Green “Phil Earle’s hilarious first-love story is for everyone who’s ever dared to fall head-over-heels. It’s note-perfect portrayal of discovering romance is guaranteed to make you laugh, cringe and cheer” – Keith Gray “Charmingly awkward, angsty and very funny. Northern Soul will strike a chord with all of us who have embarrassed ourselves for love” – Jenny Pearson “Funny, sharp and full of the hilarious horrors of teenage life. No one can tell a story quite like Phil Earle” – Katya Balen “Awkward, tender and dull of soul. A Spin the Bottle merry-go-round of a story” – Steven Camden “A joyous read!” – Lisa Thompson “A tale of young love, dating disasters, and the ghost of Otis Redding eating kebabs, this was excrutiating and hilarious – and I never want to be a teenager again” – Alastair Chisholm “I absolutely loved it. It’s so sweet, funny, relatable, well paced and original …” – Sarah Crossan “I've read pretty well every word Phil Earle has written, but this might just be my favourite of his books. So funny, so charming, so true. This is what it feels like to be a 14 year old boy in love for the first time.” – Anthony McGowan

MQ - University of Nebraska Press Banners to the Breeze The Kentucky Campaign Corinth and Stones River
Book SynopsisAnalyses three major Civil War campaigns that were conducted following a series of devastating Confederate defeats at the hands of Ulysses S. Grant in the spring of 1862. Earl J. Hess mixes dramatic narrative and new analysis as he brings these campaigns together in a coherent whole. Previously unpublished historic photographs of the battlefields are included.Trade Review"Hess's study is a balanced, thoughtful account of three separate Civil War campaigns. . . . Hess's account is superbly fairminded. . . . The final result is definitely worthwhile. All levels."—Choice"Like all of Hess’s books, this one is marvelously done. I am especially pleased with his treatment of Iuka and Corinth."—Herman Hattaway, author of Shades of Blue and Gray: An Introductory Military History of the Civil War"The University of Nebraska series features professional historians who eschew the traditional narrow tactical study, and instead examine the military operations within a wider political and social context. The books are synthetic works that use the most recent scholarship in providing a comprehensive overview of the campaigns. . . . Hess meet[s] this formidable challenge.”—Mark Bradley, Civil War History"Without a doubt, Earl J Hess’s Banners to the Breeze is one of the finest Civil War campaign histories ever written. . . . A welcome addition to the Great Campaigns of the Civil War series and necessary for a thorough understanding of the importance of the western theater to the defeat of the Confederacy."—Indiana Magazine of History"A concise synthesis of recent Civil War scholarship. . . . Persons interested in one of these campaigns would do well to start their study with this book. Scholars in the field will find some of the observations about commanders a good point of departure for future academic debate."—Damon Eubank, West Virginia History"A well-written book. It is informative and objective. The author comments on the shortcomings of both sides with sound reasoning. His descriptions of the movements of the various forces are detailed and point out the difficulties encountered. This book contains far more than just the stories of these three battles. I recommend this excellent book to all Civil War readers."—Duane A. Benell, Civil War Courier
