Boydell & Brewer Ltd The Dying and the Doctors The Medical Revolution
Book SynopsisA survey of the changes in medical care for those approaching death in the early modern period. From the sixteenth century onwards, medical strategies adopted by the seriously ill and dying changed radically, decade by decade, from the Elizabethan age of astrological medicine to the emergence of the general practitioner in the early eighteenth century. It is this profound revolution, in both medical and religious terms, as whole communities' hopes for physical survival shifted from God to the doctor, that this book charts. Drawing on more than eighteen thousand probate accounts, it identifies massive increases in the consumption of medicines and medical advice by all social groups and in almost all areas. Most importantly, it examines the role of the towns in providing medical services to rural areas and hinterlands [using the diocese of Canterbury as a particular focus], and demonstrates the extending ranges of physicians', surgeons' and apothecaries' businesses. It also identifies a comparable revolution in community nursing, from its unskilled status in 1600 to a more exclusive one by 1700. IAN MORTIMER is an independent historian and Honorary Research Fellow at the University of Exeter.Trade ReviewAn important book for the social history of medicine. * ENGLISH HISTORICAL REVIEW *Mortimer's description and conclusions must inform our understanding of seventeenth-century medical practice. * JOURNAL OF SOCIAL HISTORY *Contributes to our understanding of the mechanisms, inspirations, and effects of an important paradigmatic shift which continues to shape societies across the globe today. * JOURNAL OF HEALTH AND HISTORY *Chart[s] a remarkable medical revolution taking place throughout seventeenth-century England. Historians of early modern medicine should thank him for that. * JOURNAL OF THE HISTORY OF MEDICINE AND ALLIED SCIENCES *The results of this meticulous and painstaking research are persuasive and have far-reaching implications for the social history of medical care of the dying. * SOCIAL HISTORY OF MEDICINE *Mortimer's book is a feat of statistical organisation. He has deftly and meticulously analysed thousands of probate records, using complex and subtle quantities techniques. [...] It is a valuable contribution to the history of medicine, and succeeds in its aim to draw attention to the hitherto acknowledged rise in the employment of doctors at times of grave illness. * LOCAL POPULATION STUDIES *A work of great clarity and elegance, and provides the bedrock on which social history must be based. * TIMES HIGHER EDUCATION SUPPLEMENT *A must for any studying the history of science or subjects related to the Renaissance and Industrial Revolutions. * MIDWEST BOOK REVIEW *Table of ContentsIntroduction The medicalisation of East Kent The medicalisation of central southern England The availability and nature of medical assistance Medical practices The nature and availability of nursing care Plague and smallpox Conclusion Appendix: Medical indices for East Kent, West Sussex, Berkshire and Wiltshire Bibliography

Rodale Incorporated The New Evolution Diet: What Our Paleolithic Ancestors Can Teach Us about Weight Loss, Fitness, and Aging
Book SynopsisBelieve it or not, our DNA is almost exactly the same as that of our ancestors. While scientific advances in agriculture, medicine, and technology have protected man, to some degree, from dangers such as starvation, illness, and exposure, the fact remains that our cave-dwelling cousins were considerably healthier than we are. Our paleolithic ancestors did not suffer from heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, or obesity. In fact, a good deal of what we view as normal aging is a modern condition that is more akin to disease than any natural state of growing older. Our predecessors were incomparably better nourished than we are, and were incredibly physically fit. And certainly none of them ever craved a doughnut, let alone tasted one. In fact, the human preference for sweet tastes and fatty textures was developed in an environment where such treats were rare, and signaled dense, useful energy. This once-helpful adaptation is the downfall of many a dieter today. It's what makes it hard to resist fats and sweets, especially when they are all around us.We are not living as we were built to live. Our genes were forged in an environment where activity was mandatory—you were active or you starved or were eaten. This created strong selective pressure for genes encoding a smart, physically adept individual capable of very high activity levels. Humans are among the most active of species, and we carry energetically expensive brains to boot. Our energy expenditures rank high among all animals. At least they once did. The New Evolution Diet by Arthur De Vany, PhD is a roadmap back to the better health our ancestors once enjoyed. By eliminating modern foods, including carbohydrates, dairy, and all processed foods from our diets, we can undo much of the damage caused by our modern food environment. The plan is based on three simple principles:1. Enjoy the pleasure of food and do not count or restrict calories. Eat three satisfying meals a day filled with non-starchy vegetables, fruits, and high-quality, lean proteins2. Do not starve yourself, but do go hungry episodically, for brief periods, to promote a low fasting blood insulin level and increase metabolic fat-burning. 3. Exercise less, not more, but with more playfulness and intensity. The goal is to create a strong body with a high resting metabolism and a large physiologic capacity to move through life easily—not to burn calories.Trade Review“There's a disconnect between how we were designed to live and the way we are now living. De Vany's plan is all about closing that gap. The New Evolution Diet lays out an approach to food and exercise that feels intuitive.” —The Daily Beast

Book SynopsisTrade Review"Martin Halliwell offers fresh and inventive insights into the postwar period, showing mastery over an amazing range of material to demonstrate how fully the therapeutic triumphed in American culture." -- Stephen Whitfield * author of The Culture of the Cold War *"Following varied terms of health and illness, mind and body, through successive changes in the healing arts, Halliwell shows the postwar 'triumph of the therapeutic' in a wholly new light." -- Howard Brick * Louis Evans Professor of History University of Michigan *"Therapeutic Revolutions makes a very good read. It should be on the reading list of every scholar concerned with postwar America, especially with the nature of therapeutic culture." * Reviews in American History *"Martin Halliwell’s Therapeutic Revolutions traces the major post-World War II transformations in medicine and psychiatry through the lens of popular culture. To accomplish this ambitious goal, he uses an immense number of sources that include movies, novels, poetry, television shows, popular music, magazine stories, and government and foundation reports, as well as scholarly books, articles, ethnographies, and Ph.D. theses ... The strengths of this book stem from Halliwell’s comprehensive analysis of an astonishing array of diffuse material." * Journal of the History of Medicine and Allied Sciences *"When it comes to changes and culture, Halliwell knows his subject area. Throughout the book, he reveals his deep and thorough understanding of these diverse events as they evolved in the developing 'therapeutic revolutions.' He does so through a careful analysis of the writings of the period's therapeutic authorities, integrated with abundant examples from American popular culture. Throughout the book, Halliwell convincingly shows that the variables—events, popular culture, and postwar therapies—emerged as interdependent constructions." * H-Disability, H-Net Reviews *Table of ContentsIntroduction: The Therapeutic Revolutions of Postwar America Part One Fragmentation: 1945– 1953 1 Going Home: World War II and Demobilization 2 In the Noir Mirror: Neurosis, Aggression, and Disguise 3 Ground Zero: Science, Medicine, and the Cold WarPart Two Organization: 1953–1961 4 Organization Men: Individualism Versus Incorporation 5 In the Family Circle: The Suburban Medicine Cabinet 6 Outside the Circle: Growing Pains, Delinquency, and SexualityPart Three Reorganization: 1961–1970 7 Institutions of Care and Oppression: Another America Speaks 8 The Human Face of Therapy: Humanistic and Existential Trends 9 Counterculture: Dissent, Drugs, and Holistic Communities Conclusion: Beyond the Two Cultures?

The Experiment LLC Mind Over Menopause: Lose Weight, Love Your Body,
Book SynopsisWith menopause, almost overnight, nothing about your body is the same. Where eating less and exercising more once allowed you to slim down, it now produces little to no results. In this book, Pahla Bowers offers a powerful new method to flip the script on menopause by adjusting how you think. Using a highly practical approach that targets really unhelpful thoughts (RUTs), she teaches readers how to lose weight and love their midlife body by: transforming their thinking about food—and not fearing calories and carbs; practicing moderate exercise, staying hydrated, and getting plenty of sleep; choosing a realistic weight goal; and never slowing down Mind Over Menopause gives women the tools they need to improve their health while eating more, exercising less, and turning good feelings into actions. With chapters that include journaling prompts and “Borrow This Thought” ideas, Bowers shows how to use the mind like a compass to steer the body in the direction it wants to go. And in the process, she proves that aging can be a positive change.
