Oxford University Press European Sacred Music
Book SynopsisEuropean Sacred Music is a collection of over 50 of the finest examples of sacred choral music from continental Europe, ranging from the sixteenth to twentieth centuries. John Rutter has prepared completely new editions of all the pre-twentieth-century items, going back to the earliest and most reliable manuscript or printed sources. New English singing translations are provided for most pieces, and playable keyboard reductions.Orchestrations are available for hire for the eight accompanied items (Bach: O Jesu Christ, meins Lebens Licht; Buxtehude: Magnificat; Fauré: Cantique de Jean Racine; Franck: Panis angelicus; Gabrieli: Jubilate Deo; Mendelssohn: Verleih uns Frieden; Monteverdi: Beatus vir; Mozart: Ave verum Corpus)Some items from this volume are available separately as leaflets in the Oxford Choral Classics Octavo series.Trade ReviewThere is no doubt that the European Sacred Music Choral Classics volume is one of the most important additions to the repertoire made in this century. The fame of this collection has spread so fast that it needs little comment from me, except to congatulate John Rutter on his great achievement. Here at last is an opportunity for choirs to broaden and enrich their musical and spiritual experience with the best works from the pens of Bruckner, Brahms, Lassus, Monteverdi, Palestrina, Reger, Verdi and Victoria. Russian composers are particularly well represented by works from Rachmaninov, Stravinsky, Glinka and Tchaikovsky . . . This book is an absolute bargain, since it not only contains 54 anthems and motets, but also includes fascinating and erudite notes on every single piece, with sources always given. It goes without saying that every self-respecting choir should have a set of this valuable book in its library: so on with the coffee mornings and sponsored swims! * CMQ, April 97 *Table of ContentsMiserere ; Christus factus est ; The Lord's Prayer ; O Jesu Christ, meins Lebens Licht, BWV 118 ; Ach, arme Welt, Op. 110 no.2 ; Geistliches Lied, Op. 30 ; Warum ist das Licht, Op. 74 no.1 ; Ave Maria ; Christus factus est ; Locus iste ; Os justi ; Magnificat ; O vos omnes ; Cantique de Jean Racine ; Panis angelicus ; Jubilate Deo a 8 ; O vos omnes ; The Cherubic Hymn ; Ave maris stella ; Ave Virgo sanctissima ; Pater noster ; Dixit Maria ; Crux fidelis ; Ave Maria ; Adoramus te, Christe ; Ave verum Corpus ; Timor et tremor ; Crucifixus a 8 ; Verleih uns Frieden ; Psalm 43 (Richte mich, Gott) ; Beatus vir ; Cantate Domino ; Christe, adoramus te ; Ave verum Corpus ; Exsultate Deo ; Sicut cervus ; Tu es Petrus and Quodcumque ligaveris ; Salve Regina ; Ave Maria ; Abendlied, Op. 69 no. 3 ; Unser lieben Frauen Traum ; O salutaris Hostia ; Psalm 23 ; Psalm 100 ; Selig sind die Toten ; Ave Maria ; Laudate Dominum ; Hymn to the Virgin ; Ave Maria ; Exsultate justi ; Ave Maria a 4 ; Jesu, dulcis memoria ; O quam gloriosum ; O vos omnes

Edition Peters Viola Concerto in C minor Edition for Viola
Book SynopsisJohann Christian Bach''s'' Concerto in C minor has become one of the most popular viola repertory pieces. The piece is however not by J.C. Bach at all, but rather a well-intentioned fabrication of the Casedesus brothers Henri and Marius. Henri Casadesus was an outstanding violist and presented this concerto in 1916 as a new discovery by J.C. Bach. It was subsequently revealed to be an invention of Casadesus himself, ''inspired'' by J.C. Bach sources. This edition contains a piano reduction and offers the possibility of performance by viola, cello or violin, containing separate parts for these instruments. Oxford University Press Messiah Vocal Score
Book Synopsisfor SATB soloists, SATB choir, and orchestraThere is no single definitive version of Messiah. Handel continued to make revisions to the score throughout his life either to improve it or to suit the abilities of individual performers or the needs of an occasion. This edition presents the standard version (with which most people are familiar) complete with a new, practical piano reduction. The appendix contains most of Handel''s alternative movements and transpositions. The full score includes all the alternative movements and transpositions in their correct sequence and all material is signposted clearly and cross-referenced with the vocal score. Clifford Bartlett provides a text that is as close as possible to the sources, yet is presented with performers'' needs in mind. Both full and vocal scores provide guidance on performance practice, and the vocal score includes ance piano/organ reduction suitable for both rehearsal purposes and performance without orchestra. Complete orchestral Trade ReviewBartlett's line on performance practice is sensible and non-didactic . . . The result is an edition that's clean and unfussy, refreshingly uncluttered by superfluous grace-notes or odd-looking demi-semiquaver ornaments . . . Bartlett's edition, however, makes it perfectly possible to reconstruct the 1742 Dublin, 1743 London, or 1750 revised Messiah, according to taste, which should afford music directors hours of innocent fun. * The Singer December 98 *The players loved the parts - clear and clean, and I loved the edition; almost everyone in the Hall (the sell-out audience of 1200+ and all the performers) had a marvellous evening . . . I know Clifford and like his work very much indeed - please convey my congratulations to him and the setters and printers, and yourselves, of course, as publishers, for doing everyone such a great favour in producing this wonderful new edition - it's the one for me!! * Colin Touchin, Director of Music, University of Warwick *The stated purpose of the edition is to present a score in modern notation that represents what Handel wrote, doing so with the minimum of editorial interference in order to allow performers to make thier own decisions about how to interpret it . . . The result of this editorial restraint is a refreshingly uncluttererd score which can be used by experts and non-specialists alike . . . The music is clearly drawn and printed on good quality paper with no perceptible show-through. Where movements occupy more than a single page the title and number is shown in small print on each page, and the initial page number for each item in the vocal score is printed in the full score for ease of cross-referencing. * Choir & Organ Jan 99 *Such simple practical aids will save much rehearsal time: one hopes that other publishers of choral works will follow suit . . . The text is an eminently practical one, not least in the keyboard reduction which lies easily under the fingers. Rapid semiquaver runs in thirds and sixths are avoided wherever possible, yet the essentials of the orchestral texture are always present in an effective transcription for piano or organ which can be used both for rehearsals and for performances without orchestra. * Choir & Organ Jan 99 *In the succinct comentary to the full score, there is a useful guidance over rhythmic conventions and a heartening open-mindedness about the validity of a wide variety of interpretations . . . The printing and layout are examplary, and the vocal score is very competitive in price. The full score is exceptional value and is extremely practical. * Martin Neary, Early Music Review Dec 98 *Indeed the OUP version is notable for its economy. It is clear, uncluttered and as near as possible to what Handel wrote . . . All users will find the Introduction to the vocal score interesting. The choral conductor will find additional information and helpful, practical guidance in the full score . . . Mention of orchestral parts brings me to an important characteristic of the whole of this edition - clarity, and a felling of spaciousness. Players welcome this, and for the orchestral librarian of the Northern Sinfonia, the orchestra in the Huddersfield launch the parts are the clearest he has worked with in 35 years experience. . . . This is undoubtedly a quality production. If a choir is contemplating a new set of Messiah (and the scores and parts are readily compatiible with other editions) this one must be at the top of the shortlist. * Howard Layfield, Mastersinger Spring 99 *What is impressive is the breadth of information that is presented in user-friendly terms . . . This is certainly an extremely helpful and practical edition which will serve as a very useful resource for performer and scholar alike. * Early Music May 99 *. . . provides the musician with a reliable, well-edited score of a performing version, I cannot imagine this could be bettered . . . Not before have all the rich additional material and revisions been included so accessibly in a single edition . . . They also have some hugely useful suggestions for performance and information about conventions and textual history from the editor. . . For organists/pianists who have for many years done battle with various versions of the accompaniment to Messiah . . . Timothy Morris's piano reduction will be eagerly scrutinized. This is clearly not a 'made easy' version, not a simple reduction to a skeleton of Handel's lively orchestral textures, but it is a lot more playable than commercially available adaptations hitherto . . . Publishing standards are high, clarity ideal, cost (of the vocal score at least) extremely good. In short, this is an excellent new performing score of a key choral work, edited in the light of modern performance practice influenced but not overwhelmed by the authenticity movement. A most finished piece of Musick indeed. * Organists Review May 99 *[Clifford Barlett's] new edition of Handel's Messiah. . . scores high marks for the care taken to present what Bartlett describes as a 'standard version of the work . . . The practical advantages of the full score derive mainly from the clarity of its typography, the economy of sides occupied by what elsewhere often involves a succession of irritating page turns, and a sense that the whole enterprise has been coaxed through the press with maximum care. Likewise, the vocal score is uncluttered and easy to use. * Early Music Today Aug 99 *

ACC Art Books Breaking Stones
Book Synopsis"I was impressed by The Stones. They were dressed casually, had mischief in them and were different to other bands." Terry O Neill In July 1962, a group of young men played a gig at The Marquee Club on Oxford Street, London. They called themselves 'The Rollin' Stones' and little did they know they would soon be making music history. This evocative new book captures the youth, the times and the spirit of The Stones' formative early years. And documenting 1963-1965 were two young photographers just starting out in their careers. Terry O'Neill, aged just 25, had a few years' experience photographing musicians and knew that this group had the same magic as another British phenomenon that just recently started to chart, The Beatles. As the band was starting to record and tour, Gered Mankowitz came along. His first shoot, the now famous Mason's Yard session, was so fruitful, Gered was asked to tag along on tour to America. Gered was a mere 19 when he picked up his camera and joined the band on stage in 1965. Between these two legendary photographers, they chronicle the band's beginnings and these indelible images are forever placed in music's consciousness. The photography throughout this book is embellished with various memories and interviews, celebrating the early days and giving an insight into what it must have felt like to go from a small club in Soho with no record deal to touring the world a few years later with a number one record. Terry O'Neill and Gered Mankowitz, two of the most respected, collected and exhibited photographers in the world were sitting in the front-row. 2016 is set to be a huge year for the Rolling Stones, as London's Saatchi Gallery hosts the first ever major exhibition dedicated to the band: Exhibitionism, a career-spanning, museum-style display of Stones artefacts and memorabilia. ACC Editions' publication of this book is due to coincide with the opening of this ground-breaking exhibition.Trade ReviewA brilliant new book reveals candid photos of Mick, Keith, and the Stones on the cusp of international fame, taken at work, rest, and play by photographers Terry O'Neill and Gered Mankowitz.--Mail on Sunday "Daily Mail, March 20, 2016 " The photography throughout this book is embellished with various memoires and interviews, celebrating the early days and giving an insight into what it must have felt like to go from a small club in Soho with no record deal to touring the world a few years later with a number one record. Edition Peters Sonatas and Partitas for Violin Solo BWV 10011006
Book SynopsisBach''s set of three Sonatas and three Partitas for unaccompanied violin, were completed by 1720. Perhaps seeded as early as 1703, they were ultimately fruits of his years employed as Kapellmeister at the court in Köthen where his employer Prince Leopold of Anhalt-Köthen, a Calvinist with little requirement for liturgical music and also a keen musician, encouraged Bach to write much instrumental music for public and private entertainment. Nothing written before approached the complexity, expressive range and scale of this music, from the volleys of chords and rhythmic intricacy of the B minor Partita''s opening Allemanda>/i> and the endlessly inventive elaboration of the same work''s variant ''doubles'' to the vastness of the D minor Partita''s concluding Ciaccona, possibly the longest stand-alone movement written to that point, which contains worlds of contrast in its 64 variants of the opening bars. Reportedly a fine violinist himself, Bach completely redefined virtuosic and expre

Sam Marlowe, Time Out London, 16.09.10 'A fierce and eventually shocking story that really taps into the anxieties of teenage youth' Mark Shenton, Sunday Express, 19.09.10 The dialogue zips along, and students love it; the characters swear and bully, but make clever, biting remarks, and the chemistry between them sizzles through the writing.
