Book SynopsisThe philosophy of Friedrich Nietzsche (1844-1900) was almost wholly neglected during his sane life, which came to an abrupt end in 1889. Since then he has been appropriated as an icon by an astonishingly diverse spectrum of people, whose interpretations of his thought range from the highly irrational to the firmly analytical. Thus Spoke Zarathustra introduced the ''superman'' and The Twilight of the Idols developed the ''Will to Power'' concept; these term, together with ''Sklavenmoral'' and ''Herrenmoral'', became confused with the rise of nationalism in Germany. Idiosyncratic and aphoristic, Nietzsche is always bracing and provocative, and temptingly easy to dip into. Michael Tanner''s readable introduction to the philosopher''s life and work examines the numerous ambiguities inherent in his writings. It also explodes the many misconceptions fostered in the hundred years since Nietzsche wrote, prophetically: ''Do not, above all, confound me with what I am not!''ABOUT THE SERIES: The Very Short Introductions series from Oxford University Press contains hundreds of titles in almost every subject area. These pocket-sized books are the perfect way to get ahead in a new subject quickly. Book SynopsisThis is the first translation into English of a milestone in Nietzsche interpretation. Wolfgang Müller-Lauter examines Nietzsche''s doctrines of the will to power and the overman in light of Nietzsche''s philosophy of real contradictions. He shows that Nietzsche''s vision of inherently contradictory 'wills to power' is the source of irresolvable contradictions in his philosophy. Müller-Lauter has remained at the forefront of German Nietzsche studies throughout the quarter century since this book first appeared. This long-awaited translation, containing two substantial subsequent essays, is a major addition to the English-language Nietzsche literature Trade Review"The most lucid and stimulating study of Nietzsche's philosophy to appear in recent years. Its thesis should intrigue the expert; its clear presentation of basic ideas, the novice."-Herbert Reicher, University of North Carolina "The first comprehensive discussion of Nietzsche's philosophy in the light of his later systematic ideas."-Gerd-Gnther Grau, Ideologie und Wille zur Macht "In his important book Muller-Lauter introduces a thesis to Nietzsche studies that deserves close consideration: that contradiction is the most this thinker is able to achieve in his inquiry into reality."-Wilhelm Weisschedel, Zeitschrift fr philosophische Forschung

As a result of the new view opened up by this edition, Nietzsche has clearly come into his own as one of the more important philosophers of modern times. It was not until after World War II that one began to realize the extent to which Nietzsche's notebooks had been tampered with, jumbled, badly deciphered, and poorly edited, and it was not until the Colli-Montinari edition that scholars could be confident for the first time of having a trustworthy text."—Van A. Boydell & Brewer Ltd Nietzsche’s Early Literary Writings and The Birth
Book SynopsisUnderstands Nietzsche in the light of his activity as a creative writer from his juvenilia through the publication of The Birth of Tragedy, providing the first extensive study in English of his early literary works. The name Friedrich Nietzsche resonates around the world. Although known primarily as a philosopher, Nietzsche began his writing career while still a boy with literary texts: poetry, prose, and dramas. The present book is the first extensive study in English of these early literary works. It understands Nietzsche in the light of his activity as a creative writer from his juvenilia through his first two years as professor of classical philology at the University of Basel, that is, through the 1872 publication of his first major work, The Birth of Tragedy Out of the Spirit of Music. Knowledge of Nietzsche's early literary writings further underscores the value of The Birth of Tragedy as a work of world literature. The present study makes available almost all of Nietzsche's early poetry and extensive excerpts from his early prose works and dramas - much of it in English for the first time - along with commentary. A final, extensive chapter on The Birth of Tragedy treats it as the culmination of the early literary works. The book contains many new insights into Nietzsche and his work and essential source material for future research. All quotations from Nietzsche are given in both the original German and in English.Table of ContentsPreface Acknowledgments Abbreviations Introduction: Early Nietzsche 1: The Early Poetry 2: The Early Prose Works 3: The Dramas and Drama Fragments 4: The Birth of Tragedy Out of the Spirit of Music 5: Conclusion Bibliography Index

De Gruyter Die Griechen im Denken Nietzsches
Book SynopsisEnrico Müller presents here the first overall philosophical account of the significance of the Greeks for Nietzsche’s thought. He demonstrates how Nietzsche’s own philosophy developed in his occupation with Attic tragedy, Greek culture and the Pre-Socratics and expounds the problems Nietzsche had in delineating his philosophy from the logos-based philosophy of Classical Greece. In his interpretation of the tense relationship between Nietzsche and Socrates and Plato, Müller concludes that in the final analysis Nietzsche’s philosophy remains bound to the models of Socratic-Platonic dialectics. Working from contemporary scholarship in Greek Studies and Ancient History, the astonishing modernity of Nietzsche’s approaches becomes apparent.

Book SynopsisThe works of Friedrich Nietzsche have fascinated readers around the world ever since the publication of his first book more than a hundred years ago. As Walter Kaufmann, one of the world's leading authorities on Nietzsche, notes in his introduction, Few writers in any age were so full of ideas, and few writers have been so consistently misinterpreted. The Portable Nietzsche includes Kaufmann's definitive translations of the complete and unabridged texts of Nietzsche's four major works: Twilight of the Idols, The Antichrist, Nietzsche Contra Wagner and Thus Spoke Zarathustra. In addition, Kaufmann brings together selections from his other books, notes, and letters, to give a full picture of Nietzsche's development, versatility, and inexhaustibility. In this volume, one may very conveniently have a rich review of one of the most sensitive, passionate, and misunderstood writers in Western, or any, literature. De Gruyter Nietzsche on Instinct and Language
Book SynopsisThis volume consists of the revised and expanded versions of the papers presented at the International Conference “Nietzsche On Instinct and Language”, held at the Universidade Nova de Lisboa (Portugal) in December 2009. The list of contributors includes top Nietzsche scholars, like Werner Stegmaier, Patrick Wotling, and Scarlett Marton. The volume as a whole represents a fresh look at Nietzsche’s attempt to connect language to the instinctive activity of the human body. Four of the papers focus on Nietzsche’s early Nachlass notes and writings, including The Birth of Tragedy and On Truth and Lying in a Non-Moral Sense; the other seven deal with his mature views on this important subject, especially in Beyond Good and Evil, The Gay Science, and the Nachlass. In focusing on how Nietzsche tries to dissolve the traditional opposition between instinct and language, as well as between instinct and consciousness and instinct and reason, the different papers consider, from this viewpoint, such Nietzschean themes as morality, value, the concept of philosophy, dogmatism, naturalization, metaphor, affectivity and emotion, health and sickness, tragedy, and laughter.

Nietzsche

Book SynopsisJohn Richardson here organizes Nietzsche''s thinking around the central and unifying concept of values. Richardson maps in detail Nietzsche''s arguments, which crucially distinguish three basic ways of valuing. The first is the valuingNietzsche attributes to all living things, and to us humans in our bodies; Nietzsche insists that we already value in our drives and affects. The second isour distinctively human valuing, which we carry out as subjects and agents; these conscious and worded values are superimposed on those bodily ones, in ways Nietzsche finds deeply problematic. The third is the new way of valuing that Nietzsche offers as his lesson from that diagnosis and critique of our human values; these new values are centered on a universal affirmation or Yes, epitomized in the thought of eternal return. Each of the book''s twelve chaptersexamines a different aspect of one of these ways of valuing, showing the complexity of Nietzsche''s thinking on its topic, but also its unity and coTable of ContentsChapter 1: Value. De Gruyter Nietzsche und die historisch-kritische Philologie
Book Synopsis “It is not for nothing that one has been a philologist, perhaps one is a philologist still!” – Throughout his work, Nietzsche has paid numerous tributes to philological scholarship. On the basis of a wide variety of sources, this study undertakes to demonstrate the deep impact of the historical-critical philology in which he had been trained. Nietzsche did not abandon philology in favour of philosophy but openly acknowledged his debt to its methods, especially in his later writings. This insight contributes to a reassessment of central concepts like text, genealogy, interpretation, or perspectivism, and it leads to a rejection of standard accounts in the theory of interpretation as well as in the history of scholarship. The book pleads for literary scholarship grounded in sceptical philology.
