Book SynopsisCaroline Sarojini Hart is Senior Lecturer in Education at Sheffield Hallam University, UK, and Affiliated Lecturer in Education at the University of Cambridge, UK.Trade ReviewIn Aspirations, Education and Social Justice: Applying Sen and Bourdieu, Caroline Sarojini Hart provides a new and innovative approach to understand how aspirations are developed and realized ... The strongest parts of the book are the chapters where Hart unfolds the impressive data set she produced through the Bradford and Sheffield studies. Especially, the insightful, thoughtful, and often witty interview extracts are introduced eloquently, and ... illustrate Hart’s eminence in conducting interviews ... Aspirations, Education and Social Justice: Applying Sen and Bourdieu is a well-written and well-researched book that introduces a new approach to evaluate the ways in which students build aspirations and how they transform aspirations into decisions ... The book is therefore highly recommended for scholars interested in Sen’s capability approach and for policy-makers involved in the education sector. * Journal of Human Development and Capabilities *This is a wonderfully probing work on the contribution of aspiration and confidence in education, along with the role of education in the pursuit of social justice. C Hurst & Co Publishers Ltd The Asian Aspiration: Why and How Africa Should
Book SynopsisIn 1960, the GDP per capita of Southeast Asian countries was nearly half of that of Africa. By 1986 the gap had closed and today the trend is reversed, with more than half of the world's poorest now living in sub Saharan Africa. Why has Asia developed while Africa lagged? The Asian Aspiration chronicles the stories of explosive growth and changing fortunes: the leaders, events and policy choices that lifted a billion people out of abject poverty within a single generation, the largest such shift in human history. The relevance of Asia's example comes as Africa is facing a population boom, which can either lead to crisis or prosperity, and as Asia is again transforming, this time out of low-cost manufacturing into hi-tech, leaving a void that is Africa's for the taking. Far from the optimistic determinism of 'Africa Rising', this book calls for unprecedented pragmatism in the pursuit of African success.Trade Review‘Unlike most of the recent books vaunting the economic success of East Asia relative to Africa, this one does not limit its Asian examples to China, South Korea, and Taiwan; the authors also discuss poorer countries, such as Indonesia, Malaysia, and Vietnam, whose history and pas economic policy failures make their recent successes more instructive for African countries.’ -- Foreign Affairs

MP-KAN Uni Press of Kansas President Obama Constitutional Aspirations and
Book SynopsisOn the campaign trail, Barack Obama spoke often about his constitutional principles. In particular, he objected to George W. Bush's claim to certain “inherent” presidential powers that could not be checked by Congress or the judiciary. After his inauguration, how did President Obama's constitutional principles fare? That is the question Louis Fisher explores in this book.Trade ReviewLou Fisher is among our most highly regarded scholars of American political institutions and constitutional law. His most recent book, President Obama: Constitutional Aspirations and Executive Actions, illustrates why this is so. Fisher’s focus on President Obama’s propensity for unilateral governance captures the contradictions between, on the one hand, Obama’s statements respectful of constitutional limitations on executive authority and of the lawmaking responsibilities of Congress and, on the other hand, his frequent resort to unilateral executive behavior in the absence of congressional assent. Fisher’s deep case law knowledge demonstrates how the courts often have been complicit in allowing discretionary presidential authority where there may be little basis for it. Readers may come to different judgments as to why presidents exercise discretionary authority when there are few or nonexistent constitutional grounds for doing so. Fisher’s book contributes greatly to this debate, even if it does not bring closure to it."" - Bert A. Rockman, professor emeritus of political science, Purdue University""A revealing and learned manuscript by one of America’s finest scholars of constitutional government. It sparkles with interpretations and critiques of the relevant literature and of the many Supreme Court cases that impact this most important of subjects. It is certain to be read and debated by scholars and citizens interested in the legacy of President Obama’s administration."" - Joel D. Aberbach, Distinguished Research Professor of Political Science and Public Policy, University of California, Los Angeles""Lou Fisher’s latest book is the definitive account of President Barack Obama’s expansive exercise of Article II powers. Although Obama had pledged to respect the separation of powers and the limits of the president’s constitutional authority, Fisher shows that the forty-fourth president was really not all that different from previous modern chief executives in his actions. This volume says much about the continual march down the path of unilateral actions by presidents of both parties that has culminated in President Donald J. Trump’s current push for lodging even more power in the hands of the chief executive."" - Mark J. Rozell, dean of the Schar School of Policy and Government, George Mason University""President Obama: Constitutional Aspirations and Executive Actions is a must-read for anyone concerned with understanding the consequences of ever-expanding executive power. As a presidential candidate, Barack Obama promised a different approach to constitutional issues than that of George W. Bush. How much really changed? Eminent constitutional scholar Louis Fisher posits in this engagingly written, clearly argued, and extensively documented analysis that Obama’s lofty ambitions often failed to become reality."" - Jeffrey Crouch, author of The Presidential Pardon Power

AltaMira Press,U.S. Appetites and Aspirations in Vietnam
Book SynopsisIn Vietnam during the long nineteenth century from the Tây Son rebellion to the 1920s, individuals negotiated changing interpretations of their culinary choices by their families, neighbors, and governments. What people ate reflected not just who they were, but also who they wanted to be. Appetites and Aspirations in Vietnam starts with the spread of Vietnamese imperial control from south to north, marking the earliest efforts to create a common Vietnamese culture, as well as resistance to that cultural and culinary imperialism. Once the French conquered the country, new opportunities for culinary experimentation became possible, although such experiences were embraced more by the colonized than the colonizers. This book discusses how colonialism changed the taste of Vietnamese fish sauce and rice liquor and shows that state intervention made those products into tangible icons of a unified Vietnamese cuisine, under attack by the French. Vietnamese villagers began to see the power they Trade ReviewAppetites and Aspirations in Vietnam is food studies at its best, but it is also much more. Erica J. Peters demonstrates, with both intellectual elegance and a deeply rooted sense of food, how culinary choices are a marker of historical change. Using a diverse array of sources, she goes against the grain to explore everyday life in Vietnam in the long nineteenth century, affording a penetrating insight into what Vietnamese people wanted to be in a time of economic struggle and colonialism, and into how ordinary people experienced habitus and change, adaptation and contestation, even creativity. Appetites and Aspirations in Vietnam is a gourmet meal that leaves the reader satisfied…. The wide range of narratives of food Peters explores … sheds new light on disparities of gender, ethnicity, and wealth. Food may have been a tool of imperialism; it certainly became a tool of nationalism in modern Vietnam. Nobody would have expected the history of a ‘fusion cuisine’ would tell as much. -- Laurence Monnais, Université de MontréalA reviewer of the wide-ranging Appetites and Aspirations could evaluate this rich study along any number of axes: economic history, the history of imperial and colonial Vietnam, or the history of race and ethnicity, to name a few. Nonetheless, food is most emphatically Peters’s preferred ground and where she anchors her argument that French and Vietnamese used diet to shape radically divergent identities in colonial Indochina….It would be unfair to expect a study so ambitious to succeed equally well on so many fronts….Nonetheless, this fascinating and suggestive narrative of nineteenth-century imperial and colonial Vietnam will appeal to a wide range of general readers and specialists. * H-France Review *Table of ContentsIntroduction Prologue: Hunger and Revolution Chapter 1. Blank Forms Editions Blank Forms: Aspirations of Madness
Book SynopsisA rare look at an underappreciated and pioneering figure in Japanese free jazzAspirations of Madness, Blank Forms? fifth collection of archival, unpublished, or newly translated texts, takes its title from a series of interviews with Japanese free jazz pioneer Masayuki Takayangi that were published in Japanese in 1975?76 and are published here in English for the first time. The interviews provide a rare look at Takayanagi?s eccentric practice and personality, both long under-recognized by audiences outside (and often, inside) of Japan. The postwar Japanese history that Takayanagi describes also surfaces in this publication?s opening piece, a poetic tribute by the writer and artist Louise Landes Levi to one of Takayanagi?s contemporaries, the poet Kazuko Shiraishi. Aspirations of Madness includes a second Levi poem as well, ?A Deep River,? written while at La Monte Young and Marian Zazeela?s Dream House in 2003. Complementing this tradition of Japanese free improvisation and poetry is the republication of a 1977 interview with Joseph Jarman, the great composer, poet, and multi-instrumentalist. We also feature Charles Stein?s introduction to Being = Space x Action. Further along, Aspirations of Madness features an excerpt from The Tree of Music, a cross-cultural treatise by the Russian musicologist Genrich ?Henry? Orlov, the English translation of which has never been published before. Aspirations of Madness closes with one of Maryanne Amacher?s final pieces of writing, ?The Agreement,? from 2009. The text takes the form of a letter between Amacher and the Open Ended Group, with whom she had planned to collaborate on her final, unfinished project, Lagrange: A Four Part Mini Series.
