Book Synopsis“The Seth books present an alternate map of reality with a new diagram of the psyche...useful to all explorers of consciousness.” — Deepak Chopra, M.D., author of The Seven Spiritual Laws of SuccessFrom the Bestselling Author of Seth Speaks and The Nature of Personal RealityIn the first volume of Dreams, “Evolution,” and Value Fulfillment, Seth presented an in-depth picture of the origin of all life — from the inner dream world to the vast display of material creation. Here, in Volume Two, Seth continues his explanation of the physical world as an ongoing self-creation — a direct and intentional outgrowth of the wisdom of the life forms that inhabit it, including humanity. He expands upon his vision of a thoroughly animate universe, where virtually every possibility not only exists, but is constantly encouraged to achieve its highest potential. In his typical awe-inspiring manner, Seth sheds light on many controversial and complex subjects, including:• The ways in which our religions have stifled the human spirit• Surprising insight into life’s meaning and purpose• The genetic basis of faith, hope, and charity• The pursuit of pleasure as a fundamental human need• How each species keeps millions of characteristics within its genetic bank for various contingenciesDreams are mental work and play combined, psychic and emotionally rich creative dramas. They also involve you in the most productive of enterprises as you begin to play with versions of events that are being considered for physical actualization... — Jane Roberts, Speaking for Seth

Rutgers University Press Reformed American Dreams Welfare Mothers Higher
Book SynopsisReformed American Dreams explores the experiences of low-income single mothers who pursued higher education while on welfare after the 1996 welfare reforms. This research occurred in an area where grassroots activism by and for mothers on welfare in higher education was directly able to affect the implementation of public policy. Trade Review"Sheila Katz's study of single women with children on CalWORKS in the San Francisco bay area should be read by those who have stereotyped low-income women in need of assistance, who we often gratuitously denigrate. Katz's interviews demonstrate these women are willing to work and—against all odds (and sometimes the bureaucracy)—seek to advance their fortunes and those of their children by seeking higher education. It is an important, empathic, empowering story." -- Robert Hauhart * author of Seeking the American Dream *"The American Dream is betrayed by policies that promotes college for some but not all. In this must-read, Sheila Katz reveals this harsh reality in painstaking detail and, as a scholar-activist, demands that we do something about it.” -- Sara Goldrick-Rab * Founding Director of the Hope Center for College, Community, and Justice *"Katz chronicles the inspiring 'survival narratives' and grassroots activism of mothers receiving public assistance as they negotiate the many barriers to achieving the American Dream. We could do worse than learn from student mothers on welfare." * Cercles *"This book demonstrates that mothers on welfare in higher education are pursuing the American Dream, and if policymakers truly want to get these mothers off public assistance, they need to facilitate access to higher education, so they can experience upward mobility into family-supporting jobs." * Work and Occupations *Table of ContentsContents Acknowledgments List of Abbreviations and Acronyms Preface 1 Reforming the American Dream 2 Pathways onto Welfare and into College 3 Reformed Grassroots Activism 4 Survival through College 5 My Education Means Everything to Me 6 Hope and Fear during the Great Recession 7 Graduating into the Great Recession 8 An American Dream for All Afterword Appendices Notes Bibliography Index

Saraband Interpreting Dreams: Messages from the
Book SynopsisDo you sometimes wake from dreaming with an unease you find difficult to shake? Is there one recurring nightmare that haunts you? Or do dreams bring you welcome relief from your waking life? We spend around a third of our lives asleep, so it’s understandable that dreams have been intriguing and troubling humans for millennia. Some believe our dreams to be an expression of hidden desires, a cathartic release for our unconscious mind, or even crucial insights or predictions we can’t access while awake. Whatever their functions, our dreams are worth paying attention to. Yet with the demands and diversions of each day, it can be hard to find time to reflect on them. This compact volume approaches dreaming with a mindful eye, asking us to spend time reflecting on our dreams to help us decipher their secrets and discover what our nighttime unconscious could reveal about our daily lives, needs and desires. Interpreting Dreams is both an invitation to pay more attention to our dreams, and a toolkit for unlocking their hidden meanings. By bringing awareness to the time we spend dreaming, we can learn to become more present and fulfilled in our daily lives, and perhaps even alleviate some of our most persistent anxieties.

John Wiley and Sons Ltd The Sociological Interpretation of Dreams
Book SynopsisFor Freud, dreams were the royal road to the unconscious: through the process of interpretation, the manifest and sometimes bewildering content of dreams can be traced back to the unconscious representations underlying it. But can we understand dreams in another way by considering how the unconscious is structured by our social experiences? This is hypothesis that underlies this highly original book by Bernard Lahire, who argues that dreams can be interpreted sociologically by seeing the dream as a nocturnal form of self-to-self communication. Lahire rejects Freud’s view that the manifest dream content is the result of a process of censorship: as a form of self-to-self communication, the dream is the symbolic arena most completely freed from all forms of censorship. In Lahire’s view, the dream is a message which can be understood only by relating it to the social world of the dreamer, and in particular to the problems that concern him or her during waking life. As a form of self-to-self communication, the dream is an intimate private diary, providing us with the elements of a profound and subtle understanding of who and what we are. Studying dreams enables us to discover our most deep-seated and hidden preoccupations, and to understand the thought processes that operate within us, beyond the reach of our volition. The study of dreams and dreaming has largely been the preserve of psychoanalysis, psychology and neuroscience. By showing how dreams are connected to the lived experience of individuals in the social world, this highly original book puts dreams and dreaming at the heart of the social sciences. It will be of great value to students and scholars in sociology, psychology and psychoanalysis and to anyone interested in the nature and meaning of dreams.Trade ReviewDrawing on many disciplines, on little-known works about dream activity and on discoveries about consciousness and the workings of thought, Bernard Lahire puts forward a bold theory: we replay at night the unconscious schemas and determinisms that structure our personality and underlie our behavior. L'Obs This great theoretical work, which opens up a whole host of questions about what troubles us day and night, about what social structures do to our unconscious and about what the world does to our nocturnal imagination, awaits only its practical application in order to corroborate its stimulating insights. Les Inrocks "With insight and serious thought, Lahire builds a bridge between sociology and psychoanalysis. Across the bridge travel not only empirical and theoretical contributions to each field, but intellectual spurs to new creativity." Craig Calhoun, Arizona State University "Bernard Lahire has established himself as arguably the most creative and insightful French sociologist of his generation. A leading global social psychologist, Lahire reveals how dreams transcend the line between fantasy and daytime reality. This masterwork persuades us that that the chasm between sleep and waking is not as deep as easily imagined. Every sociologist will learn from Lahire and every psychologist should learn from him as well." TFM Publishing Ltd Unfulfilled Dream: The Story of Motor Racing at
Book SynopsisFor eleven years, the world's leading drivers contested international races at the Aintree circuit on the outskirts of Liverpool. Fangio, Surtees, Clark, Moss, Hawthorn and many more were on the grid. The British Grand Prix was held there five times, along with many other major events at the venue that shared its ground with the famous horse-racing track. But in April 1964, the final Aintree 200 was run and the sights and sounds of Grand Prix cars were never to be experienced at Aintree again. Club and national level racing continued until July 1982, when it ceased altogether and there appears to be little likelihood of it ever returning. So what is the story behind the dramatic rise and fall of Aintree as a premier motor sport venue in Britain? How and why did motor racing come to be staged there? What caused its eventual demise as a circuit? This book explores the fascinating history of Aintree, before, during and after its all-too-brief reign as Britain's Grand Prix venue. Supported by around 200 rare photographs, many never before published, this book fills a significant gap in the history of post-war racing in Britain.Trade Review"Well researched...With revival of interest in Aintree, the book comes as a welcome addition to the list of circuit histories" -- Historic Motor Racing News, April 2005.
