Cinnamon Press Do Not Enter Alarmed Area
Book SynopsisOpening a conversation with paintings and sculptures from the 16th Century to the present, this second collection by Nigel Hutchinson displays all his hallmark wit and insight. Artists as diverse and Brueghel (elder and younger), Lautrec, Paul Nash, Barbara Hepworth and Cezanne find themselves taking a skewed but searching view of the points at which life and art rub together, sometimes harmoniously, sometimes with greater friction. Humane, wry, always spirited, Do Not Enter Alarmed Area is a testament to the power of both words and images.

Bloomsbury Publishing PLC Are You Not Entertained
Book SynopsisAnglo-American culture is marked by a gladiatorial impulse: a deep cultural fascination in watching men fight each other. The gladiator is an archetypal character embodying this impulse and his brand of violent and eroticised masculinity has become a cultural shorthand that signals a transhistorical version of heroic masculinity. Frequently the gladiator or celebrity fighter - from the amphitheatres of Rome to the octagon of the Ultimate Fighting Championships - is used as a way of insisting that a desire to fight, and to watch men fighting, is simply a part of our human nature. This book traces a cultural interest in stories about gladiators through twentieth and twenty-first-century film, television and videogames.Trade ReviewSteenberg moves deftly across time, space, media and story type, interrogating the gladiator as a powerful archetype of joyous nostalgic violence. This definitive study maps cinema, genre histories and masculinity in new and thought-provoking ways: a truly spectacular achievement. -- Yvonne Tasker, Professor of Media and Communication, University of Leeds, UKAre You Not Entertained offers a comprehensive and meticulously researched account of the figure of the gladiator across visual media. From Ancient Rome to The Hunger Games and The Bachelor, the volume carefully traces the contested place of the gladiator. -- Frances Smith, Lecturer in Film Studies, University of Sussex, UKAre You Not Entertained is a brilliant, engaging, and innovative examination of the archetypal gladiator character, from its origins in Ancient Rome to its depictions in movies and other popular media, and brings timely attention to the complex intersections between gladiatorial masculinity, violence, nostalgia, and eroticism. -- Cynthia Felando, Lecturer, University of California, Santa Barbara, USATable of ContentsList of Figures, Tables and Illustrations Dedication Acknowledgements Introduction: Millennial Masculinity and the Gladiators of Y2k - “Are You Not Entertained?” 1. Oxford University Press Inc Were Not Here to Entertain
Book SynopsisWe remember the 1980s as the era of Ronald Reagan, a conservative decade populated by preppies and yuppies dancing to a soundtrack of electronic synth pop music (the MTV generation). But the decade also produced some of the most creative works of punk rock - not just the music of bands like the Minutemen and the Dead Kennedys, but also visual arts, literature, poetry, and film. Kevin Mattson documents what Kurt Cobain once called a punk rock world. He shows just how widespread the movement became, and how democratic (not at all New York-centric), due to its commitment to Do-It-Yourself (DIY) ethics. Mattson puts this movement into a wider context, telling about a culture war that punks opened up against the sitting president. Reagan''s talk about end days and nuclear warfare made kids panic; his tax cuts for the rich and simultaneous slashing of school lunch program funding made punks seethe at his meanness. The anger went deep, since punks saw Reagan as the country''s entertainer-in-cTrade Review"Mattson looks at American punk of the early 1980s through excellent scholarship. His work reveals more than a music scene--which itself produced outstanding bands. He also examines anarchist thought, with roots in the nineteenth century, put into practice by youth creating their own way of life. This is a guidebook to a future for people who want it." --Krist Novoselic, founding member of Nirvana and author of Of Grunge and Government "Historian Kevin Mattson trains his eye on the US Hardcore Punk underground during the Reagan years and digs deep into archived fanzines and recordings of the era to shed light on a bunch of kids, scattered around the country, who were disaffected by the predominant culture and desperate to make their own. The good news is that Mattson grew up in this scene and he has a clear understanding of it. We're Not Here to Entertain is a great read that focuses on a vital and largely overlooked time and place in music history. When my friend and fellow Punk Rock War Veteran Steve Turner saw the galley of this book on my kitchen counter, he said, 'It's high time someone wrote that book'--a comment that sparked a discussion about Mr. Epp playing with Really Red at the Metropolis in '83, or was it Savage Republic at the Ground Zero Art Gallery, maybe it was Solger opening for Black Flag with Dez on vocals in 1980..."--Mark Arm, lead singer of Mudhoney "Firmly establishes American hardcore in the politics of the moment and the economics of the music industry at the time. An essential read for anyone wanting to understand the cultural history of the 1980s."--Vic Bondi, founding member of Articles of Faith "Authored by a co-founder of the D.C. 'political punk' organization Positive Force, this valuable book sheds light on the dynamics underlying the complex interrelationship between a mostly oppositional 1980s punk counterculture and the more conservative mainstream (including the corrupt corporate music industry). The punks may not have won their cultural battle against such a powerful Goliath. But by creating a viable underground alternative that still persists in various forms today, they didn't exactly lose, either." --Jeffrey Bale, Middlebury College; author of The Darkest Sides of Politics and former co-editor of Maximumrocknroll and Hit List "Among the many virtues of Kevin Mattson's book is the way it shows how millions of American youth found each other in their local punk scenes and contested President Reagan's 'Morning in America' bullshit. This was not merely political posturing; as Mattson demonstrates, early 1980s punk political thinking was serious and sophisticated. Mattson--a punk politico himself in Washington at the time--takes seriously the political potency of punk dissenters in that era. And guess what? In this new age of political polarization, they still have something to teach us."--Michael Foley, author of Dead Kennedys' Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables "Consistently fascinating... Fans of T.S.O.L., Fargo Rock City, Scratch Acid, and their like should rush to this invigorating history."--Kirkus, Starred Review "Absorbing."--AV Club "This is a book worth reading because it has so much direct relevance to American punks operating today... pretty terrific work."--PopMatters "We're Not Here to Entertain is a joy to read, erudite and stimulating, capturing the excitement of creating art and music against the grain."--Jacobin "[An] impassioned new history of punk politics and culture in the 1980s... We're Not Here to Entertain shows how punk taught a new generation of white, middle-class suburban kids to critique US foreign policy or call out the military-industrial complex. The punk world emerges in Mattson's telling as a definitive cultural formation--a successor to the New Left and counterculture of the '60s and the Popular Front of the '30s."--The NationTable of ContentsPreface: "From memory to history" Prelude: "When Punk Broke and Opened" (1979-1980) Chapter 1. Taylor & Francis Armed NonState Actors in International Humanitarian and Human Rights Law Foundation and Framework of Obligations and Rules on Accountability
Book SynopsisThe accountability of armed non-state actors is a neglected field of international law, overtaken by the regimes of state responsibility and individual criminal accountability as well as fears of legitimacy. Yet armed non-state actors are important players in the international arena and their activities have significant repercussions. This book focuses on their obligations and accountability when they do not function as state agents, regardless of the existence or extent of accountability of their individual members. The author claims that their distinct features lead to their classification into three different types: de facto entities, armed non-state actors in control of territory, and common article 3 armed non-state actors. The mechanisms that trigger the applicability of humanitarian and human rights law regimes are examined in detail as well as the framework of obligations. In both cases, the author argues that armed non-state actors should not be treated as entering international law and process exclusively through the state. The study concludes by focussing on their accountability in international humanitarian and human rights law and, more specifically, to the rules of attribution, remedies and reparations for violations of their primary obligations.Trade Review"This is a useful and careful monograph, on a very topical subject matter. It is presented with analytical legal depth and sensitiveness to practice and its needs. The conclusions reached remain on the whole measured and reasonable - rather than excessively militant. This fact strengthens the impact of the analysis. Overall, a clearly gainful and stimulating reading for all those interested in the law of armed conflict." - Robert Kolb, University of Geneva, Switzerland"Mastorodimos' monograph is an important contribution to a very topical aspect of international law: the accountability of Armed Non-State Actors in times of war and peace. The author covers all the relevant legal dimensions of International Humanitarian and Human Rights Law in depth. The writing is clear and convincing, as are his use of sources and analysis. This book is written for academics and professionals alike." - Sascha-Dominik Bachmann, Bournemouth University, UKTable of ContentsTable of Case Law, Table of International Conventions, Table of Other Agreements, Table of Documents from International Organizations, Table of Travaux Préparatoires, Table of National Documents, Table of Documents from Non-Governmental Organizations, List of Abbreviations, Preface, introduction, 1 Notion of Armed Non-State Actors, 3 obligations and Accountability of Armed Non-State Actors in international Humanitarian law, 4 obligations and Accountability of Armed Non-State Actors in international Human rights law, 5 the obligations and Accountability of Armed Non-State Actors, Bibliography, Index

John Wiley & Sons Inc The Leader on the Couch
Book SynopsisThere is often a great discrepancy between what leaders say and what they do. This book sets out to discover why that is. Manfred Kets de Vries explores the notion that this failure is grounded in leaders' inability to recognize their own moods and subconscious urges, leading to subjective decisions based on hidden forces.Trade Review"One new book that does deserve praise" (Financial Times Career Point, September 2006) "As Manfred Kets de Vries, a professor at Insead business school, shows in a new book, the psychological condition of leaders can have a profound impact on all those who work under them." Jessica Kingsley Publishers Intention and Non-Doing in Therapeutic Bodywork
Book SynopsisExploring the Buddhist/Taoist concept of non-doing and intention in relation to bodywork, this book focuses on how the therapist should approach their client without agenda and meet them where they are at. This requires the therapist to pay attention to their own surfacing intentions and leave assumptions behind so they may focus on simply 'being', which is a profoundly active, non-reactive expression of presence, rather than a passive state of resignation. The ramifications of sub-conscious doing and wilful intention can negatively impact expressions of health and so the author explains how therapists may skilfully navigate between intention, attention and embodied non-doing whilst treating clients, and how this creates the foundations for safe relational touch.Trade ReviewAnother book worthy of reading. Andrew Pike condenses, in a brilliant manner, complex and often confusing subjects of intention and sensations. Promoting slowing down, being aware and noticing are very difficult and under-appreciated practices in our fast-paced global society. He explains how these human experiences should be considered an essential practice and not a simple luxury. Best of all he guides the reader through the simple process of accessing a quiet, deeper, inner sense of self that assists us to deal with a culture of rampant speed and unrelenting bombardment of external noise and disturbances. -- David Berceli, Ph.D., CEO of Trauma Recovery Services and Creator of Tension and Trauma Releasing Exercises (TRE).Although Andy Pike's new book is entitled, "Intention & Non-Doing in Therapeutic Bodywork", I believe the work deserves a much wider, more general audience. For 'Intention and Non-doing in Therapeutic Bodywork' is a blueprint, complete with a large number of immediately practical exercises, for how to be a better human being, more present, more often, and less reactive in the process. Recommended. -- Kit Laughlin, M. Litt., Founder of Stretch Therapy and author of Overcome neck & back pain. This deeply inquiring work invites the therapist to value not only the acutely subtle world of touch, but to self-inquire into the unseen yet palpable inner presence needed to bring an underlying truth and wholeness to the work between therapist and client. Practical exercises throughout help one embody the ultimate elegant simplicity of this approach. A beautiful, insightful masterpiece and guide for anyone working in a body-based therapeutic environment. -- Janet McGeever, Co-author of Tantric Sex and Menopause, Practices for Spiritual and Sexual RenewalIt is unusual to come across a mind that can delve so deeply into such an ethereal subject while simultaneously insisting on the embodiment of the truths discovered. You will feel Andy's insight throughout this book...his inspiring words, delicate descriptions and creative metaphors...they are alive, as is the essence they carry. -- Dr Graham Mead, MD, Creator of the InnerSense ProgramIn this book Andy skilfully takes us into the detailed and nuanced world of sensation-based awareness, leading readers to greater richness, clarity, and efficacy in their work. This text is a tremendous gift to astute bodyworkers who recognize the limitations of technique-based work and are ready to explore deeper states of therapeutic insight. -- Ryan Hallford, RCST. Taylor & Francis Ltd First Do No Harm The Paradoxical Encounters of
Book SynopsisAt the outset of World War I - the Great War - Freud supported the Austro-Hungarian Empire for which his sons fought. But the cruel truths of that bloody conflict, wrought on the psyches as much as the bodies of the soldiers returning from the battlefield, caused him to rethink his stance and subsequently affected his theory: Psychoanalysis, a healing science, could tell us much about both the drive for war and the ways to undo the trauma that war inherently breeds, but its principles could just as easily serve the enemy's desires to inculcate its own brand of truth.Even a century later, psychoanalysis can still be used as much for the justifications of warfare and propaganda as it is for the defiance of and resistance to those same things. But it is in the investigation of the motives and methods behind these uses that psychoanalysis proves its greatest strength. To wit, this edited collection presents published and unpublished material by analysts, writers, and activists who have worked at the front lines of psychic life and war from various stances. Set at a point of tension and contradiction, they illustrate the paradoxical relation of psychoanalysis as both a site of resistance and healing and a necessary aspect of warmaking, propaganda, and militarism. In doing so, we venture from the home front - from the trauma of returning veterans to the APA's own complicity in CIA black sites - across international borders - from the treatment of women in Latin American dictatorships to the resistance to occupation in Palestine, from mind control to an ethics of responsibility. Throughout, a psychoanalytic sensibility deconstructs the very opposition that it inhabits, and seeks to reestablish psychoanalysis as the healing discipline it was conceived to be. Trade Review"Psychologists wield tremendous power, from the sanctity of the therapist's couch to the cold, hard, dark reality of the CIA's secret prisons. Facing a professional leadership embedded with the Bush administration and the Pentagon, a small group of dedicated psychologists mounted a disciplined campaign to put an end to the torture that was being conducted with the support and participation of their peers. As this volume documents, the struggle to reform the American Psychological Association is a story of grassroots organizing against tremendous institutional power, to force their profession to abide by the ancient imperative to 'first do no harm.' The courageous efforts of these psychologists, described herein along with the overarching role of psychology in war and its aftereffects, bring to mind the lines of Mario Savio, launching the Free Speech Movement at UC-Berkeley in 1964: 'There's a time when the operation of the machine becomes so odious - makes you sick at heart - that you can't take part. You can't even passively take part. And you've got to put your bodies upon the gears and upon the wheels, upon the levers, upon all the apparatus, and you've got to make it stop. And you've got to indicate to the people who run it, to the people who own it that unless you're free, the machine will be prevented from working at all.'" - Amy Goodman, host and executive producer, Democracy Now!"This collection holds its own among edited volumes that address the Bush White House decision to use torture. Because of its specificity to psychology, historical scope, and utilization of contemporary psychoanalysis, it warrants a wide readership. I recommend it to anyone who takes seriously trauma as a psychological condition and the place of ethics within psychology, as well as to those with interest in contemporary psychoanalysis." - Louis Rothschild, PhD., in PsycCRITIQUESTable of ContentsBotticelli, Harris, Introduction. Inner Traditions Bear and Company Confessions of a Reluctant Ghost Hunter: A Cautionary Tale of Encounters with Malevolent Entities and Other Disembodied Spirits
Book SynopsisDespite early recognition of his own psychic sensitivities and ability to see spirits, Von Braschler did not seek to become a ghost hunter. He entered on this path through a chance encounter with a professional ghost hunter. After training with her, he returned to Oregon where he began exorcising ghosts for friends and acquaintances and, as he reveals in these pages, quickly stumbled upon forces far beyond his level of experience. Sharing his true story of what can go wrong when ghost hunting, Braschler describes his training sessions with the professional ghost hunter and details his most difficult and dangerous attempts to remove spirits from haunted buildings, including an old church in Portland and an herbalist's trailer on Mount Hood, where he encountered a spirit known to choke people in their sleep. He explains how not all spirits are simply ghosts of deceased people reluctant to move on from this plane of existence. They may be entities created from the rage, hatred, or frustrations of a building's current or former inhabitants, and disturbing them can lead to dark confrontations without easy resolution. Offering a primer on ghost removal, Braschler provides practical lists of what to do and what to avoid when removing ghosts from a haunted building. He outlines how to identify what kind of spirit you are dealing with, whether it is safe to attempt removal, and how to approach the ghost and convince it to leave. Detailing his own intense and sometimes hellish battles with unseen spirits, he also includes an impassioned plea of caution to those who try to contact ghosts and spirits purely for entertainment.Trade Review“Von Braschler weaves wondrous, cautionary tales about ghosts and hauntings in this chilling page turner. It is a must-read for all who deal with the paranormal--from ghost hunters to psychic mediums, from experts to novices. Confessions of a Reluctant Ghost Hunter puts into context real-life risks that come along with engaging the paranormal. A book that seekers of the unknown should carry in their arsenal.” * Chantel Lysette, author of The Angel Code *“Fascinating reading. How refreshing to meet a ghost hunter who doesn’t crave the limelight but honestly helps people. This is an excellent read for those seeking a balanced and nuanced perspective on a too-often glamorized topic.” * Anna Cariad-Barrett, DMin, MFT, and author *“Von Braschler’s new book is a fascinating account of his experiences as a ghost hunter. It’s an absorbing, compelling, authoritative look at this fascinating subject by a renowned expert in the field.” * Richard Webster, author of Psychic Protection for Beginners *“Von Braschler’s firsthand accounts of confrontations with human ghosts and nonhuman spirits throw new light on the afterlife and our mysterious relationship to it. Book SynopsisIn his book, The Monster at Our Door, the renowned activist and author Mike Davis warned of a coming global threat of viral catastrophes. Now in this expanded edition of that 2005 book, Davis explains how the problems he warned of remain, and he sets the COVID-19 pandemic in the context of previous disastrous outbreaks, notably the 1918 influenza disaster that killed at least forty million people in three months and the Avian flu of a decade and a half ago. In language both accessible and authoritative, The Monster Enters surveys the scientific and political roots of today's viral apocalypse. In doing so it exposes the key roles of agribusiness and the fast-food industries, abetted by corrupt governments and a capitalist global system careening out of control, in creating the ecological pre-conditions for a plague that has brought much of human existence to a juddering halt.Trade ReviewMike Davis's The Monster at our Door...gives me everything that the news cycle doesn't: a sense of the interconnected forces and the history that set us up for what we're experiencing. -- Molly Dektar * Vogue *[A] tour de force... Book SynopsisThe significantly revised second edition of this unique practitioner guide features 65% new material and a new organizing structure. The authors show how to use motivational interviewing (MI) to have productive conversations about behavior change with adolescents and young adults in any clinical context. Noted for its clarity, the book includes extended case examples, sample dialogues, quick-reference tables, and dos and don'ts. It provides vital tools for helping young people open up about their struggles, explore alternatives, and make healthier choices around such concerns as substance use, smoking, anxiety, medication adherence, and obesity. New to This Edition *More integrative and cohesive: every chapter weaves in diverse clinical issues, replacing the prior edition's population-specific chapters. *Chapters on MI in groups and involving caregivers in treatment. *Restructured around the current four-process model of MI, and proposes maintenance of chaTrade Review"Building rapport with teenagers is notoriously difficult, often because adults struggle to understand their perspective and priorities. As someone who regularly teaches courses on counseling adolescents, I have found the ideas in this book absolutely critical in becoming a more effective therapist. I highly recommend this improved second edition, which should be required reading for both graduate students entering the field and veteran clinicians treating adolescents with any variety of problems."--Jeremy Jewell, PhD, Department of Psychology, Southern Illinois University Edwardsville "With the first edition of this book, Naar and Suarez introduced adolescent mental health professionals to applications of MI with youth. The second edition provides updated evidence that supports MI, along with expanded practical strategies for working with youth struggling with a wide range of concerns in mental health, substance use, and medical settings. Graduate faculty and clinical supervisors will be impressed by the scholarship on every page; trainees will appreciate the practical tools and examples."--Terry Stancin, PhD, ABPP, Chief of Psychology, The MetroHealth System; Professor of Psychiatry, Pediatrics, and Psychological Sciences, Case Western Reserve University “Filling a critical void, this book answers the call of practitioners and scholars who for years have been asking for a clinical text on how to use MI with youth. Naar and Suarez describe the developmental context and provide many easy-to-read examples of using each MI principle and strategy with adolescents and young adults in diverse settings. The second edition will make an excellent stand-alone text for a course on MI or a great supplemental text for any course on clinical interventions with youth.”--Keith Herman, PhD, Missouri Prevention Science Institute, University of Missouri "Naar and Suarez expertly describe the nuances of applying MI principles to the unique needs and issues of teens and young adults. The second edition incorporates recent research on the importance of fostering change talk and avoiding sustain talk, and includes a thought-provoking chapter on working with caregivers of teens. The authors do an excellent job of explaining MI spirit, skills, processes, and change talk in an accessible, warm, and reader-friendly manner. Chapters include helpful tables, guides, tips, and examples of what is and is not consistent with MI spirit, along with activities that allow clinicians to practice and reflect on each topic area. I recommend this book for graduate-level classes in psychotherapy and child clinical psychology. It would serve as an excellent companion reference to a graduate-level clinical practicum, internship rotation, or postdoctoral fellowship."--Tracy O’Leary Tevyaw, PhD, Clinical Professor of Psychiatry and Human Behavior, Alpert Medical School of Brown University-Table of Contents1.

Book Synopsis2023 Edgar Award FinalistOne of the New York Times' Best True Crime Books of 2022"Trailed is meticulously investigated, achingly intimate, and doggedly persistent in the pursuit of justice." -Robert Kolker, bestselling author of Hidden Valley RoadIn May 1996, two skilled, free-spirited backcountry leaders, Lollie Winans and Julie Williams, entered Virginia's Shenandoah National Park for a week-long backcountry camping trip. During the couple's final days in the park, they descended the narrow remnants of a trail and pitched their tent in a hidden spot. After the pair didn't return home, park rangers found a scene of horror at their campsite: their tent slashed open, their beloved dog missing, and both women dead in their sleeping bags. The unsolved murders of Winans and Williams continue to haunt all who had encountered them or knew their story. When award-winning journalist and outdoors expert Kathryn Miles looks into the case, she discovers conflicting evidence, mismatched timelines, and details that just don't add up. With unprecedented access to crucial crime-scene forensics and key witnesses-and with a growing sense of both mission and obsession-she begins to uncover the truth. An innocent man, Miles is convinced, has been under suspicion for decades, while the true culprit is a known serial killer, if only authorities would take a closer look.Intimate, page-turning, and brilliantly reported, Trailed is a love story and an urgent call to make wilderness a safe space for women-a story destined to become a true crime classic.Trade Review"Trailed is a beautifully written account of a great American tragedy—the unsolved murders of an undetermined number of young women, all by the same serial killer, who got away. Book Synopsis“?A beautifully written account of a great American tragedy—the unsolved murders of an undetermined number of young women, all by the same serial killer, who got away. The truth is still buried. I couldn’t put it down.”—John Grisham, #1 New York Times bestselling authorA riveting deep dive into the unsolved murder of two free-spirited young women in the wilderness, a journalist's obsession—and a new theory of who might have done it.They must have been followed. That’s the thought I return to after all these years . . . In May 1996, two skilled backcountry leaders, Lollie Winans and Julie Williams, entered Virginia’s Shenandoah National Park for a week-long backcountry camping trip. The free-spirited and remarkable young couple had met and fallen in love the previous summer while working at a world-renowned outdoor program for women. During their final days in the park, they descended the narrow remnants of a trail and pitched their tent in a hidden spot. After the pair didn’t return home as planned, park rangers found a scene of horror at their campsite, their tent slashed open, their beloved dog missing, and both women dead in their sleeping bags. The unsolved murders of Winans and Williams continue to haunt all who had encountered them or knew their story. When award-winning journalist and outdoors expert Kathryn Miles begins looking into the case, she discovers conflicting evidence, mismatched timelines, and details that just don’t add up. With unprecedented access to crucial crime-scene forensics and key witnesses—and with a growing sense of both mission and obsession—she begins to uncover the truth. An innocent man, Miles is convinced, has been under suspicion for decades, while the true culprit is a known serial killer, if only authorities would take a closer look. Intimate, page-turning, and brilliantly reported, Trailed is a love story and a call to justice—and a searching and urgent plea to make wilderness a safe space for women—destined to become a true crime classic.Trade Review'A beautifully written account of a great American tragedy—the unsolved murders of an undetermined number of young women, all by the same serial killer, who got away. The truth is still buried. I couldn’t put it down.' —John Grisham, #1 New York Times bestselling author“Disturbing and provocative…Gripping and thoughtful, this book will appeal to those with an interest in true-crime stories and unsettling truths about places deemed safe for all.” —Kirkus Reviews “In an outdoor atmosphere where women, BIPOC, and LGBTQ+ individuals are working hard for equal footing, Trailed explores the root of sexism and bigotry in the outdoor community and becomes a rallying cry for moving forward together.” —Jennifer Pharr Davis, National Geographic Adventurer of the Year and author of The Pursuit of Endurance “Beyond an illumination of the murders of two young queer women, this book is a deeply empathetic inquiry into who has the right to venture into the woods and to do so safely. Miles' book is nothing less than a parsing of the forces that have long stood between women and queer people and their physical freedom.” —Emma Copley Eisenberg, author of The Third Rainbow Girl "Trailed is a beautiful story about a female journalist seeking clarity and life for two women she never knew, and looking to restore the wilderness as a place of healing and safety for all women in the process. An established backcountry hiker herself, Miles follows a serpentine trail of misogyny and the resilience and joy of women in spite of it. Trailed is also a love story. You will turn pages as fast as you can."—Lacy Crawford, author of Notes on a Silencing “A tragic story of young lovers, gone too soon. A #metoo reckoning, long overdue. A study of trauma’s ripple effects, extending for decades. Trailed is meticulously investigated, achingly intimate, and doggedly persistent in the pursuit of justice.” —Robert Kolker, bestselling author of Hidden Valley Road “This is a sleepless night of a book, a toss-and-turn story about a double homicide near America's legendary footpath that wrestles with intimacy, anger, and our ideas of safety. We get the fascinating, uncomfortable opportunity to join an increasingly-obsessed journalist on her quest to puzzle out what happens when a wild and peaceful place is shattered by violence.” —Ben Montgomery, author of A Shot in the Moonlight and the New York Times bestselling Grandma Gatewood’s Walk "Trailed is a beautifully written account of a great American tragedy—the unsolved murders of an undetermined number of young women, all by the same serial killer, who got away.
