Ediciones Palabra, S.A.

Messenger Publications Synodality and the Recovery of Vatican II
Book SynopsisIn less than a decade the notion of ?synodality? has emerged as a central theme in Catholic life and thought, especially in Catholics? self-reflection on who they are as the People of God: ecclesiology. The notion of the Church as ?synodal? has early roots in the many councils and synods of the early churches, east and west, but now this notion has emerged from the history of canon law to become one that portrays a whole new image of the church. The church, Pope Francis has said, is called to be synodal as it changes its self-perception from being a power pyramid seeking to impose its vision to being a pilgrim people at the service of humanity. But what are the implications of synodality? The synod on synodality in Rome 2023/24 is grappling with this question, but if the notion has any meaning it will require steady examination over a much longer period, it will need to be owned, and it will call for engagement from all parts of the Catholic Church. One can only have a synodal coming together when people from every corner of the church set out on the journey to that meeting place (synodos) of many roads. As part of this synodal engagement the Catholic Theological Association of Great Britain invited its members ? and some friends of the association ? to offer their reflections on the importance of synodality, what it means, how it can build on the work of the Second Vatican Council, and how we can engage with it today. These essays ? deliberately kept short and to the point ? are offered to our sisters and brothers in baptism in order to help us all on our journey of renewal as a pilgrim people.

Liturgical Press The Word of God at Vatican II Exploring Dei Verbum
Book SynopsisExploring Dei VerbumTrade Review“Vatican Council II’s Dogmatic Constitution on Divine Revelation was a life-changer for the twentieth-century church. In this splendid little volume, The Word of God at Vatican II: Exploring Dei Verbum, Fr. Ron Witherup tells us how it came about, what it said, and some of what happened as a result. It’s a must-read for every religious educator in the English-speaking world.” Raymond F. Collins Department of Religious Studies Brown University“Ron Witherup’s book on Dei Verbum, Vatican II’s dogmatic constitution on divine revelation, is a gem. He provides, in effect, a clear and accessible ‘exegesis’ of a document whose import and impact continue fifty years later. In addition, Fr. Witherup sets Dei Verbum in its historical context and offers practical suggestions for its ongoing appropriation. I highly recommend this book, especially for bible study groups and parish education classes.” Thomas D. Stegman, SJ Associate Professor of New Testament Boston College School of Theology & Ministry“Vatican II’s declaration Dei Verbum has proven to one of the most important and lasting actions of the Council, injecting new life and vigor into the biblical renewal of the Catholic Church. Ronald Witherup, SS, is, as he notes, a ‘product’ of this renewal—becoming a noted Catholic voice in the interpretation of the Scriptures. His dedication and skill are on display here as he provides an in-depth but very accessible commentary on the Council’s statement and lays out its meaning for the life of the Church today.” Donald Senior, CP, President Emeritus and Professor of New Testament at Catholic Theological Union in Chicago“In order to deepen both our relationship to Scripture, and to God, we must understand what we read and pray with. As a writer and speaker, I often refer to Dei Verbum, frequently urging others to study this essential document as a way of deepening their understanding of Sacred Scripture. In this treasure of a book, Ronald Witherup, SS, offers those who are familiar with Dei Verbum, as well as those who are just beginning, new and important insights into the Word of God.” Fran Rossi Szpylczyn is a Catholic writer, and lay minister in Albany, NY. Her work can be accessed at There Will Be Bread“This book is a ‘must’ for understanding the refined position of the Catholic church on sacred Scripture as proclaimed by Vatican II. Authored by a foremost biblical scholar, this book presents keen insights into the history of debates and discussions leading to the final approved text. Fr. Witherup’s commentary on each chapter of Dei Verbum offers an outstanding analysis of Divine Revelation, the relationship between Scripture and tradition, the transmission of Revelation and related questions. With its helpful charts and glossary, this book is a welcomed resource that I cannot praise enough.” Most Revered Donald W. Trautman Bishop Emeritus of Erie“A book for all seasons—but especially today! As our commitment to hearing and living the Word of God deepens and as we continue to comprehend the treasure, ramifications and challenges of the Second Vatican Council, Fr. Witherup takes us on a journey of understanding and appreciation of Scripture and one of the Council’s foundational documents, the Dogmatic Constitution on Divine Revelation, a journey that is unequalled. A survey of the history, the meaning and implications of Dei Verbum, as well as practical suggestions for the future are succinctly summarized with comprehensive clarity and fervent fidelity. This book is ideal for individual and group reflection and study, and then needs to be kept on a near-by bookshelf for continual reference.” Janet Schaeffler, OP Author, Retreat and Adult Faith Formation Facilitator“Ronald Witherup's treatment of the great Constitution on Divine Revelation provides the reader with an excellent tour of one of the most important church documents of the last five hundred years. It's both scholarly and yet very accessible. For teachers, preachers, and pastoral ministers, this book is essential reading because it embraces so fully the central role of the inspired Word of God in the life of today's Church.”Bill Huebsch is the author of The Spiritual Wisdom of Saint John XXIII (Twenty-Third Publications, 2014)The book is entirely accessible and blessedly concise. It would . . . be perfect for use in adult faith formation class or in RCIA or for the general reader. It looks at the historical context out of which Dei Verbum came, and examines each paragraph of the document, explaining the key citations and those significances that might not be obvious to the average reader . . . Reading Witherup's short but exceedingly well done analysis of the text should help cure the neglect that Dei Verbum has received. Any parish study group, adult faith formation class, high school CCD instructor, and the like will derive great benefit from reading it and reacquainting themselves with the critical document of Vatican II. I commend it without reserve. Michael Sean Winters, National Catholic Reporter

Bloomsbury Publishing (UK) Nouvelle Thologie New Theology Inheritor Of Modernism Precursor Of Vatican Ii
Book SynopsisLa nouvelle theologie - New Theology - was the name of one of the most dynamic and fascinating movements within Catholic theology in the 20th century. This title offers an introduction to one of the most influential movement in Catholic theology in the 20th century which prepared the ground for the Second Vatican Council.Trade Review'A highly informative survey of the historical development and catalytic texts of nouvelle théologie. By drawing on lesser-known figures and extensive research, Mettepenningen sheds new light on its inner dynamics and diversity. A significant and timely contribution to the understanding of a key movement in modern theology whose principles and contradictions continue to shape the church today.' - David Grumett, Department of Theology, University of Exeter, UK. -- David Grumett‘In a virtuoso performance of the historical theologian's art, Jurgen Mettepenningen brings into play both published and unpublished sources in at least five languages. He offers English-speaking readers as rich an acoount of nouvelle theologie as the present state of the archival sources allows. From its origins in France between 1935 and 1950, he brings the story of nouvelle theologie up to its subsequent internationalization and then assimilation at the Second Vatican Council. He joins an historian's eye for relevant detail with a theologian's religious sensibility. His often provocative judgments are always rooted in the sources. Nouvelle Theologie - New Theology is a timely and important contribution to the story of Catholic theology in the twentieth-century.' - William L. Portier, Mary Ann Spearin Chair of Catholic Theology, University of Dayton, OH, USA -- William L. Portier‘This work by Dr Jürgen Mettepenningen, a Louvain-trained theologian, represents a valuable contribution to the history of twentieth century Catholic theology. It carefully charts the development of nouvelle théologie from the crisis of Modernism to the Second Vatican Council. An important study, it should be of interest to theologians and historians of the period and will undoubtedly contribute to ongoing research on nouvelle théologie and the history of Vatican II.' - Gabriel Flynn, Dublin City University, Mater Dei Institute, Ireland -- Gabriel FlynnReviewed in The Tablet 2nd October 2010 (UK) ‘[The author's] exhaustively documented research recreates the issues at stake back then. As he obviously expects us to see, they remain on the agenda'This us a demanding and interesting book. Its author sets out to explore the phenomenon of the New Theology that developed in France in the years that followed the Modernist Crisis and preceded the Second Vatican Council. One merit of this work is its clarity of organisation. One of the outcomes of Mettepenningen's book is a sense of the strenuous labours they undertook. This book will be of most use to people who already have a grasp of theological questions and their history or who about to embark on postgraduate theological studies. - David Evans, Liverpool Hope University -- David Evans‘A demanding and interesting book.' -- Theological Book ReviewIn this comprehensive exposition of historical theology, Jurgen Mettepenningen has done all of us a great service... Crucially Mettepenningen shows how diverse the movement really was and how difficult it might be to collect all of its voices into a tidy package. -- Expository TimesThe book is useful and important as an historical account; it is also tantalizing as a morality tale illuminating the modus operandi of regressive forces that are far from dead in the Roman Curia. . . . Mettepenningen tells this story well, adding welcome detail to a period of theological development whose fruitfulness is still unfolding-and still contested. -- WorshipTable of ContentsIntroduction; Part 1: The Nouvelle Theologie: A New Kind of Catholic Theology?; Ch. 1: The Nouvelle Theologie: The Concept and its Contents; Ch. 2: Theological Background and Context; Ch. 3: The Four Stages of the Nouvelle Theologie; Part 2: Four Phases or Faces of the Nouvelle Theologie; Ch. 1: Stage 1: The Dominicans - Le Saulchoir, Louvain and Rome; Ch. 2: Stage The Jesuits - La Fourviere, Toulouse and Rome; Ch. 3: Stage 3: The Internatialization of the Nouvelle Theologie - The Low Countries; Ch. 4: Stage 4: Vatican II or the Acceptance of the Nouvelle Theologie - Rome; Part 3: Closing Considerations; Bibliography.

John Wiley and Sons Ltd Hitler Mussolini and the Vatican
Book Synopsis* The book is a remarkable piece of modern history which tells the story - for the first time - of a speech that was written by Pope Pius XI in 1939 in which he was intending to speak out against Mussolini and the Fascists and condemn anti-Semitism.Trade Review"Simply put, this is the most thorough and best documented study yet to appear on Pius XI."America Magazine "This excellent new book unearths and magisterially exposes new evidence - a key document for those interested in Europe's turbulent pre-war history."Hugh O'Shaughnessy, Review 31 "A first-rate study."American Historical Review "Now the most comprehensive work on the Vatican's relations with states and national churches in western and central Europe in the 1930s."European History Quarterly "Insightful, provocative and original. Fattorini's examination of Pius XI's evolving attitudes toward totalitarian states is complex and convincing."The Journal of Modern History "A revealing insight into European politics in the 1930s, and the first scholarly attempt to look at the Church's relationship with Fascism and the Nazis during that period."Birmingham Jewish Recorder "A crucial new perspective on the relationship between the Vatican, Mussolini's Fascism, and National Socialism. The tendency to focus exclusively on Eugenio Pacelli, the future wartime pope Pius XII, has obscured the troubled papacy of Pius X1 between 1922 and 1939. Professor Fattorini's narrative, in the light of the recent release of Vatican documents of the period, is sure to breathe new life into this controversial era of Church-state relations on the brink of world war."John Cornwell, University of Cambridge "Emma Fattorini's remarkable work extends our understanding of how the leadership of the Catholic Church grappled with fascism and Nazism. She does so by drawing on riveting documentation recently released from the Vatican Secret Archive and by focusing on the relatively overlooked pontificate of Pius XI. "Michael R. Marrus, University of Toronto "Fattorini's objective and scholarly volume helps to demolish the long-prevailing belief that Pius XI and his secretary of state Eugenio Pacelli - later his successor as Pius XII - concurred in the policy to pursue towards fascist Italy and Nazi Germany. She demonstrates, on the basis of solid documentation, that, while Pius XI increasingly perceived the need for confrontation with these regimes after 1936, Pacelli preferred conciliation and impartiality - policies he pursued during World War II and the Holocaust."Frank Coppa, St John's University "Emma Fattorini has produced an important work on the activities of the Vatican in the years leading up to World War II. She portrays a pope whose spirituality, rather than political views, led him increasingly to speak out against Nazism. Her book adds to a slowly increasing body of literature which illustrates that, while the Vatican may have been slow in speaking out about the persecution of the Jews, no one in the secretariat of state harbored any sympathy for Hitler."Gerald Fogarty, University of Virginia
