Arnoldsche Small China: Early Chinese Miniatures
Book SynopsisSmall China presents Chinese miniatures from 5,000 BCE up to the 15th century. The pocketsize representations of supernatural beings, people, animals, or everyday objects are virtually uncharted in East Asian crafts — even in China, these objects in jade, bronze, ivory, and porcelain are little known. Koos de Jong explores their arcane meanings and traces their production and the market for such treasures, which, contrary to official secular and religious art, include those devoted to taboo subjects such as erotica or humour. The miniatures had many different functions, from insignia, fetishes and devotional objects to burial gifts or toys. They could express good wishes or even serve as bribes. A rare glimpse into the everyday life of ordinary people and into Chinese handicrafts from thousands of years ago!

Editon Synapse The World in Miniature (7-vol. ES set)
Book Synopsis‘The World in Miniature’ was a popular series of illustrated, pocket-sized books. The series was originally produced by Rudolph Ackermann, a renowned London bookseller and publisher in the early nineteenth century. The series continued for several years from its launch in 1821 and was completed in 43 volumes. The series introduced a Western readership to the manners, character, customs, fashion, history, religion etc. of peoples from distant lands. This collection includes a facsimile reprint of seven volumes covering Asiatic and Pacific countries: Japan, China, the Philippines, Indonesia, Hawaii, the Micronesian/Polynesian islands, and New Zealand.Frederic Shoberl, the editor and author of the original series, compiled his volumes by collecting information from the latest contemporary travel writing. He intended to provide objective views of, and facts on, the cultures of the countries covered by the series. However, the (mis)representations in each book often reflected exotic Western dreams of ‘the East’. Indeed, the distorted images of ‘undeveloped’ societies in some of the colour plates are a rich source of visual information for those studying the history of Orientalism.Table of ContentsVolume 1 Japan: containing illustrations of the character, manners, customs, religion, dress, amusements, commerce, agriculture, etc. of the people of that empire (The world in miniature / edited by Frederic Shoberl) Printed for R. Scheidegger und Spiess AG, Verlag Forever Jade: Chinese Jade Miniatures from Four
Book SynopsisLuminous, with a silken glow and soft to the touch, yet harder than steel, created by nature and shaped by human hand: no other material has been more highly valued in China for millennia than jade. Since humanity’s earliest days, magical properties have been attributed to the mineral. As a burial gift it confers immortality and is said to improve health when given as medicine, as a talisman it bestows good fortune and protection. It is hardly surprising that jade objects became sought-after collectables as early as the 10th century. Zurich’s Museum Rietberg is home to an exquisite collection of Chinese jade objects spanning four millennia. In his striking images, Zurich-based photographer Felix Streuli brings them to life and makes them glow. The images reveal the most intricate details and make these works of art almost tangible to the viewer. This book features around 60 of Streuli's outstanding photographs, supplemented with concise texts on the objects they show and an introduction to the history of Chinese jade art. Interspersed short stories and poems revolving around the mythical gemstone and a reflection on the photographer’s gaze round out this carefully designed picture book. Text in English and German.

Book SynopsisIn Minor China Hentyle Yapp analyzes contemporary Chinese art as it circulates on the global art market to outline the limitations of Western understandings of non-Western art. Canongate Books In Miniature: How Small Things Illuminate The
Book SynopsisIn Miniature is a delightful, entertaining and illuminating investigation into our peculiar fascination with making things small, and what small things tell us about the world at large. Here you will find the secret histories of tiny Eiffel Towers, the truth about the flea circus, a doll's house made for a queen, eerie tableaux of crime scenes, miniature food, model villages and railways, and more. Simon Garfield brings together history, psychology, art and obsession, to explore what fuels the strong appeal of miniature objects among collectors, modellers and fans, and teaches us that there is greatness in the diminutive.Trade ReviewA rare treat, convivial and smart and brimming with intrigue. Simon Garfield excavates the curiouser of small worlds where not all is as it seems - obscure and wondrous, a bit bonkers and totally fascinating, and just my cup of tea -- KEGGIE CAREW, author of DadlandGarfield's book is thrilling, touching and very, very funny -- NINA STIBBEThis intriguing study of our urge to make scale models is full of bizarre stories and poignant insight . . . engaging and exuberant . . . The moral seems to be that we're all small, relatively speaking, which is perhaps why In Miniature is not only highly entertaining; it is also moving * * Observer * *If you are someone who appreciates the quirkier byways of human endeavour, there's plenty to surprise and delight in this compendium * * The Times * *Fascinating and often funny . . . As a (scaled-down) book, In Miniature is a well-built, highly polished entity. It is full of evocative sentences [and] amusing drive-by thwacks . . . But what he also shows in abundance is the sympathetic understanding of the needs and travails of "ordinary" people that lit up his previous books * * Guardian * *In Miniature is a delicious read; quirky, unpredictable and written with a genuine savour for the subject * * Mail on Sunday * *Simon Garfield's enthusiasm . . . is irresistible . . . Garfield offers not just intriguing snapshots of curiosities but some rather interesting history lessons * * Spectator * *Delightful . . . In Miniature is fascinating, funny and, in places, unexpectedly moving . . . This book is proof of the old adage that good things come in small packages * * Literary Review * *Garfield's intelligent exploration of mankind's passion for making small versions of large objects is meticulously researched * * Daily Express, Books of the Year * *Fashioned with as much love of, and relish for, the telling detail as many of the scaled-down creations it surveys, In Miniature finds Simon Garfield at both his wittiest and his most profound and philosophical. It is a book that puts the little things into the big picture, its perspective generous and its scope wide; you will never look at a doll house or model train quite the same again. Book SynopsisBetween 1915 and 1917 the Russian composer, Sergei Prokofiev wrote a series of twenty piano pieces. While playing them for a gatheringof friends, the poet Konstantin Balmont wrote a sonnet which entitled Mimolyotnosti which Kira Nikolayevna would translate as Visions fugitives. Inspired by these dazzling miniatures, I have assembled a jewel box containing twenty individual felt-tip drawings on watercolor paper capturing fugitive visions of China. For a country that has of late been focused on the future, I have been fascinated by the search for a true contemporary regional language in traditional Chinese architecture and painting. The intricate and careful composition in relation to landscape and light has been a continual revelation, as evidenced by the Summer Palace on the outskirts of Beijing and vanishing water towns such as Zhujiajiao, known as the “Venice of Shanghai.”

Cambridge University Press A Residence among the Chinese Inland on the Coast and at Sea Being a Narrative of Scenes and Adventures during a Third Visit to China from 1853 Collection Travel and Exploration in Asia
Book SynopsisChina was still largely alien territory for westerners in the mid-nineteenth century. In this book, first published in 1857, Robert Fortune (1813â80) describes his third visit there, but despite his relative familiarity with the country, his account is full of strange and bizarre sights and happenings. Beginning in Shanghai, where he was sent to collect tea samples for the East India Company, he describes an earthquake and the myths of its aftermath, along with his fears of becoming embroiled in the Taiping Rebellion. A keen botanist and entomologist in his own right, he also collected insects (a pastime that led him to become a figure of great hilarity among the locals) and explored the flora of the north. His account of his three-year expedition offers a glimpse of the Chinese language and culture through the lens of Victorian expectations, and is a fascinating resource for students and the general reader.Table of ContentsPreface; 1. Book SynopsisChina is poised to become the world's largest economy in the next decade. But its great struggle to modernise has been one of tragedy, conflict, and challenge. From the first attempts to introduce Western ideas into the country two centuries ago, China's long march to global primacy has been above all an epic fight to renew an ancient country and culture. Leading Sinologist Kerry Brown traces this quest for renewal through the major moments of China’s modern history. Taking the reader on a journey that includes war, revolution, famine and finally regeneration, he describes concisely and authoritatively where China has come from, and where it is heading as it achieves great power status. This is a story that is no longer just about China, but concerns the rest of the world.Trade Review'Written by a leading China scholar, the book provides a concise, compelling and cutting-edge analysis of 70 years of the PRC history.'Yanzhong Huang, Seton Hall University and Council on Foreign Relations 'Professor Brown’s highly accessible and insightful analysis of the historical antecedents of China’s post-1978 development helpfully contextualizes the momentous changes that have transformed China into a global superpower.'Robert Ash, SOAS 'Kerry Brown always seems to have an apt anecdote or telling quote to enliven this narrative of China’s rise. Offering a light alternative to the bluster, the Kentish academic draws on wit, allusion and anecdotes of adventure to render the People's Republic 'knowable' to Western readers, and in so doing, humanise its monumental ascent.

Rowman & Littlefield Publishers China in 2008
Book SynopsisThe Beijing Olympics ensured that the world would be watching China in 2008, and the year turned out to be the most tumultuous and traumatic for the Chinese since the massive Tiananmen uprising of 1989. Crippling winter storms, riots in Tibet, the devastating Sichuan earthquake, and many other dramatic eventsincluding the PRC edging out the United States to become the country with the most Internet usersgrabbed international headlines. This innovative book, based on postings from the China Beat (the noted group blog/electronic magazine based at the University of California, Irvine) as well as works from other leading publications and completely new material, showcases the as-it-happened reports and commentaries of a mix of distinguished academics, high-profile journalists, and freelance writers, and up-and-coming young China specialists. China in 2008 takes the unique approach of bringing the timeliness of the blogosphere into book form, expanding and reflecting thoughtfully on storiTrade Review[A] compelling first draft of history. Grouped by event or theme, the essays cover most of the major news stories of 2008, but with insight and perspective that never made the broadsheets. . . . It places contemporary China in a historical context that mainstream media seldom has the space to do, and offers a diverse and often very personal snapshot of China in one of its most turbulent years. * Far Eastern Economic Review *Sane, well-informed, and rich in insights. * Asian Review Of Books *Required reading for anyone trying to make sense of China's tumultuous year. This is the literary equivalent of a rowdy dinner party attended by some of the best and brightest China journalists, scholars, and thinkers. It offers a breadth of opinion and depth of context available only to those with a well-thumbed Rolodex of China specialists. But the book is accessible to the ordinary reader, and it combines the up-to-the-minute excitement of a blog with quirky academic takes on history in the making. -- Louisa Lim, National Public Radio, Shanghai correspondentI've never been to China, but I've become a China-watcher thanks to the wonderful China Beat blog. He describes how China's foreign service evolved with the country from humble revolutionary beginnings—and became a voice for a new, rising China whose self-confidence sometimes borders on arrogance. Taylor & Francis Chinas International Relations in Asia
Book SynopsisThe startling growth of Chinaâs economic and military power, as well as its cultural influence, is having a huge impact on the rest of the world. The key region to observe this impact is, of course, Asia and the past decade has witnessed significant and multi-faceted changes in Chinaâs policy toward its Asian neighbours and in the relations between them. The strategic dimension of Chinaâs approaches to Asian international relations is increasingly a focal point in the scholarly community and policy-making circles. However, views on the strategic impact of Chinaâs rise on Asiaâs political and security future are polarized, with some believing that Chinaâs regional policy is an intentional attempt to challenge the US supremacy in Asia, or who are simply suspicious of Chinaâs long-term regional ambitions.Volume I of this new Routledge Major Work collection examines Chinaâs long-term strategy in Asia, and Volume II looks at China and non-traditional security in Asia. Volume III focuses on China and Asian regionalism, while Volume IV assembles the best scholarship on the response of Asian states to the rise of China and how Chinaâs rise and its increasing influence in the region have changed the foreign and security policy of those regional states and their domestic political economies.Chinaâs International Relations in Asia is fully indexed and includes a comprehensive introduction, newly written by the editor, which places the collected material in its historical and intellectual context.

Oxford University Press Inc Politics in China
Book SynopsisA comprehensive and authoritative introduction to China''s political history, contemporary political system, and key policy areas, such as the environment, population management, and public health.Politics in China is an authoritative introduction to how the world''s second most populous nation and rapidly rising global power is governed today. Written by leading China scholars, each chapter offers an accessible overview of a key topic in Chinese politics. The opening section provides readers with a firm grounding in China''s modern political history, covering the decline and fall of the last imperial dynasty and the rise to power of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), and the radicalism of the era of Mao Zedong (1949-76), the dramatic economic reforms carried out by Deng Xiaoping and his disciples (1978 to 2012) and the era of Xi Jinping (2012-present), who has consolidated more personal power than any CCP leader since Mao.The next section sets the framework of politics in the People''s Republic of China (PRC) with chapters on the ideology of the CCP, the structure and dynamics of the political system, the role of law and legal reform, and the policies behind the country''s spectacular economic transformation. The book then shifts to a discussion of a series of major political issues in China today: reform and resistance in the countryside; changes and challenges in the cities; the arts and culture; the environment and climate change; public health; population policy; and internet politics. The final chapters of the book covers politics in four important areas located on China''s geographic periphery: Tibet, Xinjiang, Hong Kong, and Taiwan. The fourth edition of Politics in China has been thoroughly updated and includes a new chapter on the rise and rule of Xi Jinping. It is essential reading not only for students studying the PRC, but also for any reader interested in learning how China has evolved in recent times, how its political system works, and about the most important challenges it faces in years ahead.
