Book Synopsis

Following the success of Typology: Hong Kong, Rome, New York, Buenos Aires (2012) and Typology: Paris, Delhi, São Paulo, Athens (2015), this highly anticipated new volume in the Review series documents some 200 largely unpublished buildings in Tashkent, Genoa, Tbilisi, and Casablanca. These cities experienced rapid development during the 20th century, each offering its unique response to Modernism.

Over a period of four years, Basel-based architects Emanuel Christ and Christoph Gantenbein, together with the teaching staff and students at their joint chair of architecture and design at ETH Zurich's Department of Architecture, analysed the featured structures with the aim to offer a wide-ranging array of original typological solutions for contemporary architecture and urban design. Each example is documented with an image, site and floor plans, axonometric projection, key data, and a brief description. Concise essays by distinguished authors explore the historical evolution of the four cities, while an introductory theoretical essay by Emanuel Christ and Christoph Gantenbein introduces the concept of typology. A photo essay with newly taken colour and black-and-white images, capturing the current condition of some of the featured buildings, rounds of this volume.
