Specifically, she highlights the ways caretakers can engage, motivate, and support children to acquire and practice evolving skills and understandings, and nurture their sense of responsibility and ownership for learning. Dr. Guha's practical and explicit recommendations are refreshing to read, and easy to implement, modify, or extend. Ms. Guha’s book reminds us all that standards alone will not improve the educational and developmental gains of our children. We must leverage student achievement with a focused understanding of how children grow and learn in healthy and nurturing environments that foster personal growth, individual learning and relationships. In a market saturated with guidance on outcomes based achievement, Ms. Guha’s book offers a refreshing focus on the substantive process of educating our children. She offers detailed guidance to both families and schools. In our steadfast desire to raise student achievement, we must remember that the world of tomorrow demands that our children be college and career ready and also prepared with a keen understanding of themselves, their learning and their relationships with those around them. This book offers a practical approach to practitioner and parent alike in supporting such learning environments and opportunities. -- Eric Contreras, assistant superintendent, former high school principal, NYC Department of Education

In this practical and inspirational guide, the author explains the major theories and developmental topics on which sound early childhood principles and practices are based. The book contains clear and concise research findings and examples of sensitive and supportive advice for those who teach and care for children. -- Cathleen S. Soundy, professor, Early Childhood Education, Temple University, Philadelphia, PA
In this timely addition to recent work on the teaching and learning of children, Dr. Smita Guha, reminds us that for all children to grow into empathetic, creative, responsible, life-long learners, we adults — as teachers, parents, and community — must lead the way. Dr. Guha helps us, throughout this thoughtful book, with real strategies and ideas, to nurture our youth to become tomorrow's leaders! -- Brett Elizabeth Blake, Ph.D., professor at St. John's University in Queens, co-author of "Teaching All Children to Read"
