Book Synopsis
This book is a manual on how to become a streetwise and savvy principal. These leaders do things very differently from other principals and what they do that distinguishes them is not found in studies on effective principals. There are two reasons for this: 1.) researchers aren’t asking the right questions and 2.) even if researchers were asking the right questions, principals would be reluctant to reveal their responses because of the controversial nature. This book provides specific and candid suggestions and ideas for becoming a standout leader. It recommends actions and strategies to positively influence others behavior. It also suggests tactics and actions to avoid. Because, in reality, if principals are successful: students, teachers, schools and superintendents will benefit. And if this is the case; it naturally follows that school boards, parents and communities will be proud and pleased with what is happening in their schools. Everyone wins when the principal is successful.

Trade Review
Everyone has advice for new principals. But principals need a guide that is concise, engaging, and practical. That is exactly why The Savvy Principal and the wisdom of veteran principal, principal mentor, and author, Jody Capelluti, is so valuable. Based on eight dimensions of leadership, this book is packed with authentic stories that illustrate key principal lessons, with strategies, suggestions, and ideas that will make you successful from day one. Read, study, and apply this excellent book and you will be well on your way to becoming a savvy principal. -- Edward N. Brazee Ph.D, professor emeritus of education, University of Maine; former editor of professional publications, Association for Middle Level Education; and consultant to schools on technology and learning
Finally – a no-nonsense primer for aspiring and new principals that also serves as a thoughtful reminder for veterans. It is an easy, quick and informative read that addresses topics that are important to the success of a collaborative leader. No punches are pulled – the reader does not have to guess what the intent is. As the author indicates, this is not research based but is truly the observations of an individual who has watched thousands of administrators achieve varying degrees of success. The reader will learn what to look for when searching for that job that is a match – and will then know what to do and what not to do to be successful! This should be required reading!! -- Dick Durost, executive director, Maine Principals’ Association
