Book Synopsis
The Hidden Half is a collection of papers which are concerned with research and analyses on Plains Indian women. Covering a wide range of topics, this volume presents case studies which focus on particular aspects of the female condition in Plains Indian societies, mostly concentrated on tribal groups in the northern Plains region of the United States and Canada. This book’s focus is primarily historical, dealing with the conditions of Plains Indian women in the pre-reservation period, but also contains selections concerned with the role and status of women in the modern reservation era.

This volume is a CHOICE Outstanding Academic Book of 1983.

...very important...should be read by all students interested in American Indian cultures and in women studies, lower-division undergraduate and up. * CHOICE *
...offers readers both an introduction to a much neglected dimension of Plains Indian culture and 'more accurate and sophisticated explanations of female role, status and identity'... a stimulating, argumentative book and not everyone will agree with all the conclusions drawn by its authors. Nevertheless, those interested in Plains Indian culture should take time to read it. * North Dakota History: Journal Of The Northern Plains *
This collection of 10 well-documented essays succeeds admirably in providing a solid foundation for and interesting perspectives on the study of Plains Indian women. * Plains Anthropologist *
