This compilation of Maori oral literature was commissioned in 1879 by the New Zealand government to help preserve indigenous traditions. The ethnographer John White (182691) collected the texts and provided accompanying English translations. Volume 3 (1887) includes narratives about the rainbow god Uenuku, and the South Island Maori.
