Description

Book Synopsis
This book will help teacher educators, preservice and classroom teachers, and administrators investigate and discuss common issues in secondary classroom management. It supplements approaches to teaching classroom management with case studies that reflect common issues that teachers face in the classroom. The case studies address classroom procedures, equity in the classroom, disruptions by students, rules and consequences, rewards, classroom climate, teacher-student relationships, and other problems. Readers can analyze each case study and brainstorm solutions based on different approaches. The case studies are also structured to facilitate discussion among classroom teachers, paraprofessionals, and administrators.

Trade Review
A practical complementary text for classroom management courses, this volume of case studies makes educational research and theories understandable in the context of actual classroom situations. Each case study is enhanced with background information on a particular school and its 'players,' as well as discussion questions, areas for reflection, and ideas for role play. Of particular interest are topics pertaining to a safe school environment, including how to deal with violent students, bullies, and weapons. Recommended. * CHOICE *
More than anyone else, Dr. Rudolph helped [me] prepare to become an effective classroom teacher. She helped change my whole approach to education. Now armed with concise research and case studies, she brings her fresh and unique approach of classroom management to everyone else. Every teacher should own a copy of this book. -- Andrew Marsh, former student and American history teacher, Hillsboro Junior High, TX
Rudolph overviews approaches and common issues in secondary classroom management and uses case studies to address equity in the classroom, different types of disruptive students (and parents!), rules and consequences, and teacher-student relationships. * Reference and Research Book News *
It is rare for a book for educators to meld practical experience and knowledge with the theoretical aspects of classroom management. The case studies are well crafted and based on real classroom occurrences. Add to this Dr. Rudolph's passion for role-play, and the result is a book that will be an indispensable tool for improving classroom management. -- Michael J. Wavering, assistant professor of secondary education, University of Arkansas
Rich with scenarios of classroom management issues that reflect the daily life of a secondary classroom teacher, Rudolph has articulated in her book a constructivist path of inquiry into classroom management for the secondary education teacher. Each chapter offers an authentic scenario that situates the reader in a relevant issue or problem. The detailed information offered in each scenario affords the student of secondary education classroom management a pedagogical space in which to engage in discussion, reflection and role play activities that further extend the inquiry. -- Patrick M. Jenlink
