Description
Book SynopsisStephen Dupont (born 1967) is an Australian photographer who has produced hauntingly beautiful images of fragile cultures and marginalized peoples since beginning his photographic career in 1989. Piksa Nuigini records Dupont’s journey through some of the most important cultural and historical zones in Papua New Guinea: the Highlands, Sepik, Bougainville and the capital city, Port Moresby. Through images and diary entries, Dupont captures the spirit of human life on one of the world’s last truly wild frontiers. This work was conducted with the support of the Robert Gardner Fellowship of Photography at Harvard’s Peabody Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology. The publication consists of two slipcased volumes: Piksa Nuigini: Portraits and Piksa Nuigini: Diaries. The former is a collection of portraits reproduced in luscious duotone; the latter a collection of the diaries, drawings, contact sheets and documentary photographs that Dupont produced as he created his work.
Trade ReviewThe internationally acclaimed photographer Stephen Dupont claims the Pacific nation of Papua New Guinea to be his "true and fearsome friend".For more than a decade he's been taking portraits in the country's hinterland where tribal traditions thrive and outsiders have barely encroached. -- Michael Maher * BBC First Person *
PNG is one of the world’s least explored countries, both geographically and culturally, making the work of Stephen Dupont even more salient and prescient in ways we cannot yet fully comprehend. His newest book, Piksa Niugini Portraits and Diaries (Radius Books/Peabody Museum Press) is a two-volume slipcased set that documents PNG’s most important cultural and historical zones: the Highlands, Sepik, Bougainville, and the capital city of Port Moresby. -- Miss Rosen * BBC First Person *
...the attraction of Dupont's books is that his photographs exhibit enormous passion and enthusiasm and are an effort to unlock the nature of the relationship between photographer and subject. -- Guy Cross * THE magazine *
