Description
Book SynopsisAs more and more school districts have adopted standards-based curricula to meet the national concern of leaving no child behind, teachers will increasingly need additional materials to address the country's diverse student population. This book addresses this need. Standards-Based Math Activities for K-8 Students provides busy classroom teachers with classroom activities to help them implement the National Council of Teacher Mathematics (NCTM) Principles and Standards for School Mathematics. With readily available materials teachers will have more time to review and reflect on their teaching in concert with the latest developments in their profession. The author focuses on the products and processes of mathematics as the two are intertwined. This means that emphasis is placed on the Content and Process Standards of the NCTM. Each activity within this book provides process experiences that relate to particular mathematics content. In addition to focusing equally on the processes and product standards, the book will provide a culturally diverse context for these activities, which allows for a greater percent of students to relate to what is being taught. Will be of interest to all K-8 mathematics teachers.
Trade ReviewThe students were able to develop and practice their measurement skills, and were pleased with the stars they made. They were able to relate the star to their cultural celebration. Many enjoyed participating in a cooperative activity. Some realized the focus of the lesson was on the measurement standard.
Whitman's innovative lessons use math as a bridge to Pacific and Asian cultures. Everything is provided—background information, lesson plans, recommendations for children's books, and professional references—so busy teachers will be able to implement the lessons easily and effectively. I enthusiastically recommend this book as a way to enliven content area instruction and celebrate students' cultural heritages. -- Andrea Bartlet, associate professor, literacy education, Univesity of Hawaii at Manoa
My students were able to relate to the activities and found them 'fun.' I think relating the activities to their environment and culture was helpful. Some students asked for more lessons... -- Anita Wong, eighth-grade mathematics teacher, Kalakaua Middle School, Honolulu, HI
