Book Synopsis

Never before has there been a book for modern quilters celebrating the rich patterns and colours of the American Southwest. These 15 quilt patterns and three smaller projects are a graphic interpretation of all that this rich landscape provides. The simple piecing featuring a balanced use of negative space is designed to appeal to beginners and experienced quilters alike. Author Kristi Schroeder celebrates five separate regions, one in each chapter. Each quilt is photographed on location with an accompanying colour story to support the design. Included is a list of the author's favourite places to shop, eat and play in each location.

Modern and exciting improvisational methods of quilting. Great on design, colour and machine quilting with projects you'll want to make. This is the sort of book where you want to start making immediately. The projects look fresh and usable and are based in tradition. This book introduces three improv piecing techniques and traditional techniques such as log cabins and needle turn appliqué to marry old and new with a complete twist. There are 18 projects in all with a wide range of appeal. The book includes Creating With Strips, Strata and Slice and Insert improv methods. There are design tips and information for quilting on your home machine as well as special instructions for piecing curves, sewing triangles, quilt as you go, needle turn appliqué and hand quilting. Instructions are very clear and beautifully presented and include at-a-glance Materials, cutting and finished size, construction and excellent photographs and diagrams. Projects include baby quilts, cushions, throws, table runners, coasters, wall hanging, table mats and quilts in different sizes. Recommended.

Part quilting manual, part travel guide, this book contains 18 patterns and reads like a holiday brochure for Southwestern America. Even those without the travel bug will appreciate the strikingly modern designs, which are laid out with helpful diagrams and stitching tips - but most of all, the wonderful advice on building colour palettes.

We can all dream. In another life, I’d be tearing around the prairies on my trusty steed, sporting a Stetson, with a quilted throw strewn casually around my shoulders ready to turn into an impromptu campfire blanket. In Southwest Modern, Kristi Schroeder cleverly taps into our wanderlust by creating 18 quilts (many using half-square or half-rectangle triangles) that conjure up the colour and evocative charms of the Southwestern United States. A native Texan, Kristi’s love for travel and the Southwest began as a child and has spanned vast mountain ranges to the Native American culture of Santa Fe. Together with detailed instructions for making quilts, she also shares her favourite places to shop, eat and explore – from museums and galleries to trails and vistas. Originally trained as a graphic designer, Kristi spent several years as an in-house designer at Neiman Marcus, so her all designs are stylish and based on the scenic locations she knows so well. From the oranges and reds of New Mexico to the whites and creams of the Big Bend National Park in West Texas
with its wide open spaces, there’s an authenticity about Kristi’s quilts that will have you hankering for re-fried beans – eaten straight from the can.
