Book Synopsis

Situational Analysis (SA) uses analytic maps of the situation, processes and relations identified using approaches pioneered in Grounded Theory. Creator of the method, award-winning sociologist Adele E. Clarke, with Rachel Washburn and Carrie Friese, show how the method can be, and has been, used in a variety of critical qualitative studies.

The entirely new second edition of this book offers several chapters on the method and new introductory material from the editors about developments in using SA in qualitative inquiry. Part I introduces readers to the method of SA, discussing recent developments in the field. Part II offers five new chapters about various facets of the SA method, including a history of Grounded Theory and Situational Analysis, SA as critical pragmatist interactionism, using SA in managing a mixed-methods project, and SA mapping in the social policy classroom and in clinical counseling as innovatively collaborative analysis. Part III offers six new exemplar

Trade Review

"Situational Analysis in Practice 2e is a unique book on research method. By having scholars generously reflect on how they practice situational analysis, this book is an inspiring read. It shows how to think with the methodology as a creative process, from the spark of the initial research idea until dissemination."

Stine W. Adrian, Associate Professor in Techno-Anthropology, Aalborg University, Denmark

"This book teaches how to observe and listen to the world. It shows what can be gained by taking the time to listen to its rhythms and patterns, instead of fitting them into predetermined categories. It offers a method to do rigorous qualitative social science while being open to surprise."

Barbara Prainsack, Professor for Comparative Policy Analysis, University of Vienna

"Teaching qualitative methodologies in general and especially Grounded Theory and Situational Analysis, calls for published examples of good practice. Thus this book was always useful, and the second edition even more encompassing and instructive. It proves both the feasibility and the usefulness of mapping for perspectives, social worlds and discourse positions."

Jörg Strübing, Professor of Sociology, Universität Tübingen, Germany
