Description
Book SynopsisAn exploration of how selecting different materials, textures, and substrates combined with playing with the design concepts of line, contrast, scale, emphasis, color, volume and texture can impact the end result of the design. 8 quilts each with a multitude of color way options, illustrate how each design decision can impact the direction of a quilt. Projects range from table runners to full sized quilts each encouraging readers to play with design possibilities to create unique quilts of their own.
A selection of 8 graphic quilts explores the impact that different textures and materials have on the same design. Hand quilting, needle-turn appliqué, thoughtful design choices and experimentation replace the fast and easy counterparts found in many pattern books. The author will take readers from sketch, to experimentation, to final result all shot on location at her inspirational Florida studio. Carolyn has a loyal following as a successful and established pattern designer, award winning quilter and a fabric designer for Robert Kaufman.

How aptly entitled is this book? You really are going to savour not just the stitches but the designs, the whole package. The front cover gives you a good idea of what you get. Contemporary design at its best. Great colourways, fantastic workshops, simple effective design. The contents are split into Line, Contrast, Scale, Colour, Emphasis, Volume and Texture. Techniques, Workbook Pages, Templates and Resources are also included. Every craft book should look as good as this – congrats to the Lucky Spool graphic design team. Everything is clearly laid out with beautiful photography. Everything is easy-to-follow. I want to make every quilt in this book. Carolyn’s work deserves this treatment. Find ideas and inspiration to make great quilts. This book is a real keeper, it’s an 11 out of 10. It has to be my favourite quilt book of all time. I highly recommend you buy this, it is fantastic.

At the core of Carolyn Friedlander’s book are eight gorgeous patchwork blocks – the starting point from which she explores the craft that goes into quilt design. Each of the projects is created to demonstrate how different design principles can completely change the outcome of your creation – experimenting with lines, contrast, colour, scale, emphasis, texture and volume to spawn endless ideas from these few blocks. It’s a dreamy, inspirational book – but don’t doubt the value of these blocks, as they’re all more than just a little bit special. The Facing East block is a masterpiece, and we’ve already seen some quilters create some beautiful projects with this fun, but complex pattern.
