Book Synopsis

Palestinian women living in Israel are discriminated against in many aspects of their daily lives. In this book, Shadi Bayadsy examines how this situation motivated Palestinian women to organize and advocate for emancipation and equality through the professional Palestinian women organizations established in Israel. The author demonstrates the different strategies each organization employs to navigate challenging restrictions and to avoid being shut down by state apparatuses or by societal institutions and localities. This book will be of interest to scholars of women and gender studies as well as Middle Eastern studies.

Trade Review

Dr. Bayadsy examines the daily reality of Palestinian women within Israel—the strategies executed by everyday women and their allies in women organizations to emancipate themselves from cultural and political obstacles. Bayadsy explores different sectors of Israel’s diverse Palestinian communities through his various visits to the women organizations and his numerous interviews. He focuses on the specializations of each organization in relation to its local and national demands. This book is a must-read for anyone who wants to learn more about Arab women’s struggle in Israel as well as the Middle East and/or as a comparative study to other minority groups around the world.
