Book SynopsisIn 1785, Mozart received a commission from the publisher Franz Anton Hoffmeister for three quartets of the present instrumentation. The first composed, K478 in g minor, is considered the first major work for piano quartet in the chamber music repertoire. Hoffmeister, unfortunately, considered the piece too difficult for amateurs and feared the public would not buy it; and so he released Mozart from the obligation to complete the set. Happily, however, Mozart composed a second quartet the following year, that in Eb Major, K493.
Im Jahr 1785 erhielt Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart von seinem Verleger Franz Anton Hoffmeister den Auftrag drei Klavier-Quartette zu schreiben. Das erste, KV 478 in g-Moll, gilt als das erste große Werk für Klavierquartett im Kammermusikrepertoire. Leider hielt Hoffmeister das Werk für zu schwierig für Amateure und befürchtete, dass es vom Publikum nicht gekauft werden würde; daher entband er Mozart von der Verpflichtung, die Reihe zu vollenden. Erfreulicherweise komponierte Mozart jedoch im folgenden Jahr ein zweites Quartett, das in Es-Dur, KV 493.
