The gorgeous art uses deep, expressive colors to lovingly portray the instruments, especially in the double page spread of stringed instruments, in which the instruments look like works of art in a museum. The brown skinned child and her father, who appear to be South Asian, are a sweet pair, and clearly dad wants Patti to walk out of that store with an instrument. It’s hard to tell when the story takes place – the young hipster with a goatee at the music store could be from the 1960’s or now! There is a spinning LP on the cover, and those have certainly come back in style.
