Abad was born in the Philippines and emigrated to San Francisco following political persecution by the Marcos regime for leading a student protest. Informed by this experience and others, she would later note, I have always believed that an artist has a special obligation to remind society of its social responsibility. Her evolution as an artist involved living on six continents and visiting more than 60 countries, where she spent time with a multitude of art communities.
