Lixl provides an excellent introduction, explaining the book's intended purpose. His stated aim is to "historicize and personalize our understanding of the immigrant experience (p.xix)" and, in so doing, add to readers' awareness of the importance of immigrant influences on life in and the culture of the two Carolinas.
