Mark wrote his account of the life and ministry of Jesus during the time that first-century Christians were facing intense persecution because of their faith. The timing is important. Mark, in penning his Gospel, was proclaiming without apology that Jesus was indeed the Messiah and the Son of God—the fulfillment of Israel''s hopes who had indeed ushered in God''s reign.
