Book Synopsis
Helping Men: A Psychoanalytic Approach, by Loretta R. Loeb, MD and Felix F. Loeb, Jr., MD, is a series of case studies of male patients with sexual dysfunctions who were able to improve their lives with the help of the two psychoanalysts who wrote this book.

Trade Review
This is a book of hope and compassion that describes in detail the analytic processes in the treatment of men whose sexualities are conflicted. The authors eschew political correctness as well as restrictive dogma. They provide their patients with the freedom to choose what they want and need rather than something imposed by the treaters. It is written by two psychoanalysts with many years experience helping men and women. It offers therapists models for empathic and effective treatment and practice. -- Sylvia Brody Ph.D, private practice
Drs. Loretta and Felix Loeb’s recent book Helping Men . . . is a compact and rich work . . . In outlining psychoanalytic thinking regarding sexual deviant behavior, Drs. Loeb remind us that homosexuality, fetishism, transvestitism and, it would seem, gender identity disorder, represent a spectrum of compromise solutions to the threat of castration. . . . The authors take some pains to point out that the sexual deviations themselves are not, in any of the adult cases, the stated reason for starting treatment but emerge as sources of conflict and distress in the unfolding of the analyses. . . . Drs. Loeb do us a favor by reminding us of what we have already discovered, how those key discoveries can help men and how necessary it is to be optimistic, firm, and focused in obtaining optimal clinical results with them. -- Douglas Van der Heide
