Bohlman is Ludwig Rosenberger Distinguished Service Professor in the Department of Music at the University of Chicago, USA, where he is also Artistic Director of The New Budapest Orpheum Society, a Grammy-nominated cabaret. He is author and editor of many books including World Music: A Very Short Introduction (2nd ed., 2020), Focus: Music, Nationalism, and the Making of the New Europe (2010), and Wie sängen wir Seinen Gesang auf dem Boden der Fremde! Jüdische Musik des Aschkenas zwischen Tradition und Moderne (2019). He is Associate Editor for ethnomusicology of Grove Music Online, and co-editor of Acta Musicologica, the journal of the International Musicological Society.
