Banco Santander Totta 2018 Award for Young Researchers. The author analyses the evolution of Muslim armies in the Iberian Peninsula and their actions against Christians with the aim of identifying the causes that led to the collapse of Andalusian military hegemony. The conclusions of this work disprove traditional explanations and link this Muslim military decline to a lack of sufficient investment, which was in turn brought about by the rulers? preoccupation with gaining absolute power and holding on to it.
