Book Synopsis
In her literary work, Barbara Honigmann pursues the goal of positioning herself as a second generation Jewish writer in the field of contemporary German literature. The various positioning strategies are not primarily based on the author''s public appearances, but rather on how she deals with different genres and in the intertextual dialogues within the novels. Supplementing Pierre Bourdieu''s theory of the literary field with Alain Viala''s sociopoétique theory shows how the writing of a Jewish author reacts to and adapts to changes in the literary field. With reference to the terms posture and éthos, it is also discussed to what extent the author makes a specifically Jewish contribution to the development of memory strategies for the Third Reich and the Holocaust.
