In order to understand it, it is necessary to look at it from a distance, and historical anthropology is one of the best tools for doing this. Using the example of the medieval kingdom of León allows us to see the development of an original culture by means of some of the elements that made it up?its territories and borders, the power of the nobility and the clergy, the female body and the ethnic minorities. All these elements embody concepts alien to us today but rooted in the medieval world-view such as fear, the word of honour, lies or even violence. The papers collected in this volume reflect a line of research older than twenty years and provide answers to issues of historical interest
such as sacred spaces, mental images or animal allegories.
