Book Synopsis
At the time of the Enlightenment, not only power, knowledge and communication changed. Dealing with nature and natural hazards in particular was also subject to change, at the end of which modern natural hazard management developed, which still determines how we deal with impending and occurring natural disasters today. Using the example of the Electorate of Bavaria in the 18th century, the book traces this development using the natural catastrophe types of storm and flood. In examining interpretations of contemporary natural disasters and practices of dealing with them, it reveals a discourse on natural disasters that is dominated by actors from power and science and their perspectives on natural disasters. Peter Reinkemeier shows the line of development up to today's technological natural hazard management and thus contributes to a historical critical questioning of our dealings with nature and natural hazards.
