Book SynopsisDie erste Walpurgisnacht ist ein Gedicht von Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, das von den Bemühungen der Druiden im Harz erzählt, ihre heidnischen Rituale zu praktizieren und sich damit gegen das neue und aufgezwungene Christentum zu gewähren.
Es wurde von Mendelssohn als weltliches Werk für Solisten (Alt, Tenor, Bariton, Bass), Chor und Orchester vertont. Die erste Fassung wurde 1831 komponiert, sein Opus 60 folgte ein Jahrzehnt später, 1843. Es besteht aus einer programmatischen Ouvertüre, gefolgt von neun Sätzen mit einer Dauer von etwa 35 Minuten. Der vorliegende Klavierauszug ist für gemischten Chor eingerichtet.
Die erste Walpurgisnacht (The First Walpurgis Night) is a poem by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe telling of efforts by Druids in the Harz Mountains to practice their pagan rituals in the face of new and dominating Christian forces.
It was set to music by Mendelssohn as a secular for soloists (alto, tenor, baritone, bass), chorus and orchestra. The initial version was composed in 1831, with his Opus 60, following a decade later in 1843. It consists of a programmatic overture followed by nine movements lasting for about 35 minutes. This vocal score is arranged for mixed voice choir with piano accompaniment.
