The excellent use of illustrations, analogies and anecdotes leads the reader form the background of dog-human interactions, through to practical tips on managing dogs in veterinary practice. The inclusion of case reports provides contextual relevance to further add to the practical use of this book which will make any practitioner more behaviourally aware and thus improve the welfare of the dogs under our care.

The chapters on the 'Dos and don'ts of behaviourally aware general practice' and 'Do as I do' are excellent reading, ensuring that the reader considers how their own actions and behaviour can impact on a dog's experience, while setting out simple guidelines for good practice. In the later chapters Shepherd uses case studies and examples to give a fascinating insight into her legal work and the complexities of the law as it relates to dogs in the UK. All in all, the book would be a useful addition to any practice library, staple reading for anyone carrying out consultations with dogs, as well as being an interesting and entertaining read.
