Dr.’s Bevis and Bailey encourage self-examination and reflective practice by potential teaching candidates through checklists, reflective questions, and problem-solving scenarios. This book encourages aspiring and beginning teachers to practice collaboration, professionalism, and ethical behavior, and provides specific strategies to help them do so. I wish I had this book when I was a beginning teacher candidate, and feel it should be required reading for anyone considering becoming an educator or wanting to improve their teaching practice.

In Compass to the Future: Navigating the Process to become a K-12 Educator, Drs. Bevis & Bailey don't simply outline the process of becoming a teacher; rather, they engage and inspire future educators to reflect deeply on their own calling to be educators, thus igniting the fire and excitement needed in every 21st century classroom. The exercises in this book not only teach the reader about how to be a future educator, but they also compel him or her to become a global citizen, prepared to respect and engage their fellow citizens in and out of the classroom. Compass to the Future is a must-read for anyone who is thinking about becoming a teacher. This book provides a practical and real world insight to not only the history of the teaching profession but also about the skill set needed to be successful in the classroom. The content is universal for all levels K-12 and the authors demonstrate an experienced working knowledge of teaching. In my job I talk to many people who are interested in being a teacher. This book should be required for all pre-term teacher candidates and I will always recommend that they read this book first before choosing a licensing program as that this book will provide the reader with a view into the teaching profession to determine and help them decide if this is right for them.
