Description
Written while the composer was employed at the Court at Cöthen and dedicated to Christan Ludwig of Brandenburg, Bach's six Brandenburg Concertos are staples of the Baroque orchestral repertoire. The sixth concerto stands out with its unique instrumentation two violas, two violas da gamba, violoncello, and double bass with cembalo continuo. With no violins, the violas take centre stage.
Edited by prominent violist and arranger Watson Forbes, this edition keeps the two viola parts exactly as they appear in the score, while the other orchestral parts have been freely arranged for piano accompaniment. So far as the two solo viola parts are concerned, this is a performing edition which can be played either with the piano reduction or with the full instrumentation.
