Book Synopsis
When we hear the word ''enlightenment'', we think first and foremost of Immanuel Kant and his famous dictum of ''the exit of man from his self-inflicted lack of mouth''. But the European Enlightenment movement was multi-dimensional and did not move in one direction. The Bohemian philosopher Bernard Bolzano (1781-1848) stands for a completely different path in the history of the Enlightenment. He was a philosopher of the Central European stream of thought who thought a world beyond capitalism and the exploitation of the planet. He saw in the Enlightenment a specific task for every single person, ''to always be smarter, (morally) better and therefore happier'': Not to dominate the world, but to understand it, that was the task on this path to general happiness. The monograph presents the life and work of this wrongly forgotten Catholic thinker in a comprehensive and saturated manner.
