Schiffer Publishing Ltd Chesapeake Sailing Craft: Recollections of Robert H. Burgess
Thirty years have passed since the 1975 publication of Robert H. Burgess’s classic Chesapeake Sailing Craft, and while the original edition of this book has been out of print for many years, this new expanded edition brings alive the author’s photographs and recollections for a new generation of readers. Within these pages, Burgess presents a rare photographic record of the period 1925–1975, depicting the bay sailing craft from log canoe to four-masted schooner. Robert H. Burgess’s photographs show the vessels in all phases of their activities on these waters, including loading and unloading cargoes, under sail and in port, in shipyards, details of rigging, fittings, and decks, interior views, as powerboats, and abandoned hulks. No one has so thoroughly photographed the Chesapeake sailing vessels as Burgess. He applied himself to the task as though he were getting paid for it. But it was purely through a feeling for the history of the bay and its craft, an awareness that a change was taking place, that he pursued his subject so persistently. If he had not undertaken this labor of love, most of the sailing vessels in this volume would have passed on with no photographic record of their ever having existed. This edition showcases the original text, photos, and captions and adds 150 new photos with captions by William A. Fox. The result is Chesapeake Sailing Craft: Recollections of Robert H. Burgess, a new and expanded edition of the original volume for bay enthusiasts to enjoy. As in the original edition, all the photos in this book were taken by Robert Burgess. They appear as he saw them through the viewfinder of his camera and as he printed them in the darkroom, uncropped and unretouched.

Schiffer Publishing Ltd Mystery of Mary Surratt: The Plot to Kill President Lincoln
The Mystery of Mary Surratt is a true story about the Maryland woman who was convicted and hanged in 1865 for her alleged part in the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. For more than a century, historians have argued about her true role. Some claim she knew nothing about John Wilkes Booth’s plan to shoot Lincoln and other top government leaders. Others insist she knowingly helped Booth and might even have masterminded the whole plot. This book lays out the facts in a narrative that lets young readers draw their own conclusions. Author Rebecca C. Jones researched the book at the Surratt House library in Clinton, Maryland, where she read letters, old newspapers, diary entries, and other sources. She also followed the Booth escape route, interviewed researchers, and found a diary written by a woman who was in the Old Capitol Prison with Mary Surratt. The book is aimed at middle-schoolers, but is accessible to fourth graders studying Maryland history. It should help students develop critical thinking skills as they decide for themselves whether Mary Surratt was guilty or innocent. Grades 4 to 8

Schiffer Publishing Ltd Sequoia: Presidential Yacht: Presidential Yacht
Built on the shores of the Delaware Bay in 1925, Sequoia is a Trumpy-designed 104-foot wooden motor yacht that has hosted eight U.S. presidents and has become a Chesapeake Bay icon. Giles M. Kelly served as the yacht’s skipper from 1983 to 1988, and was surprised to find no book chronicled her history. During his tenure as captain of the yacht, he took the boat around the country on a goodwill cruise and later oversaw her major restoration. His wife, Ann Stevens, a professional photographer, documented much of that trip and the restoration. Although only two years of the ship’s logs could be found, Kelly undertook to uncover the truth of Sequoia’s many “sea stories” by primary research and interviewing those who had served and visited aboard. He soon discovered a kind of Upstairs, Downstairs perspective on Sequoia. This element lends a unique appeal to this saga of an interesting vessel and her service through eight administrations.

Schiffer Publishing Ltd Down on the Shore
Poet and former teacher Adele Holden, born shortly after the end of World War I, grew up in the segregated world of Maryland’s Eastern Shore. Set during the 1930s, Down on the Shore portrays the truth about a people, place, and time. It reveals the reality of a lifestyle meted out and rigidly enforced by Shore whites—a way of life both humane and cruel. It recalls battles to fulfill goals instilled by parents who saw education as their children’s only chance in a segregated country. Mixed with the hard times are joyful Christmases, celebrated births, peaceful Sunday afternoons, graduation ceremonies, first crushes, and the budding of a poet. A strong family nurtured Adele during a time when hatred, prejudice, and even death lurked around every corner. Conquering adversity, poet Adele V. Holden chose a life devoted to teaching and equality.

Schiffer Publishing Ltd Counties of Southern Maryland
The story of Maryland’s three southern counties is really the story of the beginnings of the state itself. On March 25, 1634, the first European settlers came to the area in hopes of finding religious freedom and economic opportunities, led by Leonard Calvert. Counties of Southern Maryland describes the early settlement and traces the region’s history through the end of the twentieth century in the area that now comprises St. Mary’s, Calvert, and Charles counties. This is the third book in a series about Maryland’s counties that is designed for elementary school children studying their state. The authors approach each region of the state by introducing what is common to the counties, including their history, climate, geography, and wildlife. They describe the facets of each county that are unique: its establishment, county seat, growth, government, major towns, churches and other religious organizations, schools, businesses, agriculture, and places of interest. Clever line drawings by Marcy Dunn Ramsey accompany “Fun Facts” and “Not-so-fun Facts”. Middle grades–ages 10-13.

Schiffer Publishing Ltd Dancing with the Tide: Watermen of the Chesapeake: Watermen of the Chesapeake
A certain mystique has always surrounded the watermen of the Chesapeake Bay. This book goes far toward defining it by taking the reader on a journey with the watermen as they harvest oysters, clams, fish, and crabs. The author was on board with the watermen, so he describes their work firsthand, including not only the practical details, but also the humorous and serious sides of a typical day. In documenting the work of the watermen, Blackistone tries to preserve what remains of their way of life. As fewer sons and daughters follow in the footsteps of their parents by working the water, the number of people who can convey the traditions of the watermen by oral history is gradually diminishing. Blackistone’s concern for the potential loss of an entire subculture inspired his research for this book. As a sequel to an earlier work that Blackistone published in 1989, Dancing with the Tide chronicles what has changed for the watermen over the last decade: how the changing conditions of the bay and new regulations have impacted their work life, what declining harvests have meant to them, and what the new millennium might hold for them and their families. Blackistone also interviewed government officials, conservationists, and watermen’s association officers to incorporate other facets of this fascinating occupation which so captivates the public. Engaging photographs of the watermen at work highlight this documentary of a year in the life of these harvesters of the Chesapeake Bay.

Schiffer Publishing Ltd Safe Passage Questioned: Medical Care and Safety for the Polar Tourist
In October 1995, a conference of physicians, scientists, and polar explorers was convened at the Scott Polar Research Institute in Cambridge, England. With one voice these experts spoke out about the need for improvement in the standards of safety and medical care for the polar tourist. The conclusions of the world-class experts who attended the conference form the basis for this book, the first to address this important need. The editors have skillfully synthesized the presentations of the conference attendees and drawn on their own and other experts’ experience to prepare a comprehensive look at the field of polar travel, medicine, and safety. Included are a brief overview of the polar regions, the history of polar exploration and tourism, various nations’ experiences at Antarctic bases and how they relate to tourism, possible concerns about medical care and safety for tourists in the Arctic and Antarctic, the potential hazards onboard ships, helicopters, and Zodiac-type boats, and recommendations for safety and well-being for tourists and the doctors who serve them. Whether you are a ship’s doctor, a travel agent, or a prospective polar traveler, the information and anecdotes in this definitive book will be invaluable. Schiffer Publishing Ltd From Colts to Ravens: A Behind-the-Scenes Look at Baltimore Professional Football
Step into the locker rooms, the playing fields, and the owners’ offices with sportswriter John F. Steadman as he relates the fascinating tale of football in Baltimore. In scores of animated first-person accounts, the author tells it like it was: from the organization of the Colts in 1947, through the sale of the team to Bob Irsay in 1972, to the infamous trip out of the town under the cover of darkness in 1984, and finally the acquisition of a new Baltimore team, the Ravens, in 1996. Included in the telling are the player heroes—Unitas, Donovan, Moore, Berry, and others—as well as the coaches, general managers, and owners. Among the cast of characters were con men, real scoundrels, and not a few bizarre figures. Some had good intentions; others were inept; still others were devious. The story is spiced with pungent comments from a man who was there—first as a fan watching the inaugural game in 1947 and later as a professional reporting the championship moments, the demise in 1984, and the ensuing struggle to return to the league.

Schiffer Publishing Ltd Law of Tug, Tow, and Pilotage
In its first two editions by the late Alex L. Parks, this work achieved a worldwide reputation as the authority on the maritime laws that relate to the towing industry and pilotage. The current editor has continued in that fine tradition. Nowhere has the law related to marine transportation of goods by tug and tow and harbor towage and pilotage been treated in greater depth. The citations are presented in a useful form, giving precedence to the AMC cites most commonly used by the admiralty practitioner; the essence of the holdings of cases is enclosed in parentheses following the citation. Providing the professional practitioner with a ready source of reference to this area of the maritime world, the book treats the concepts of the field by tracing their derivation in admiralty law. Also included with the analysis of each topic is a thorough survey of case law. In this edition new case citations have been added, updating the law where there have been changes and reflecting the inevitable evolution of the law that is its lifeblood. The case update is generally through the 1992 AMC.

Schiffer Publishing Ltd The Chester Town Tea Party
Amanda Wetherby was nine years old in May of 1774, when the people of Chester Town, Maryland, as a sign of their support of the people of Boston, voted not to buy, sell, or use tea. At the supper table one evening, talk turned to the unfair tax Britain had levied on the colonists and what that had to do with the shipload of tea aboard the Geddes in the harbor. Amanda was very unhappy not to have tea to drink with meals. The next day, her brother, George, swaggered off to a “tea party just for men.” Hot, thirsty, and tired of pulling weeds in the garden, Amanda decided she would go too, and get some of that tea to wash down the dust. And if the party is for men only—why, she would dress as a boy! So Amanda becomes part of an event that is still celebrated each May in modern Chestertown. Early reader–ages 5-8.

Schiffer Publishing Ltd What's Your Call Sign?: The Hilarious Stories behind a Naval Aviation Tradition
What’s Your Call Sign? is filled with cleverly written and funny stories behind the seemingly mean-spirited nicknames naval aviators use to address each other as terms of endearment. As such, these stories provide a realistic and true insight into the life of naval aviators that reveals their human side. Movies like Top Gun depict the intensity and professional drive of naval aviators trying to become the best of the best. This book peels back the onion and shows a sillier side to these intrepid warriors. No book has ever attempted to share this kind of behind-the-scenes look at naval aviation and the men and women inside those multimillion-dollar aircraft. Beautiful images of naval aviation in action accompany these hilarious anecdotes.

Schiffer Publishing Ltd Amish Gardens of Lancaster County: Kitchen Gardens and Family Recipes
Kitchen gardens are a long-standing Amish tradition, characterized by their eclectic mix of vegetables, fruit, herbs, and colorful flowers. Planned by the women of the household, they are used not only to feed their families but as an artistic outlet. This book explores the family gardens as a portrait of the women who design, tend, and harvest them. Color photographs of more than 18 gardens capture their trademark mix of orderliness and ornamentation: marigolds tucked among the melons, cockscombs with the cabbage, and a whimsically painted chair, iron gate, or old balustrade. Included are 32 family recipes straight from the garden: hot-pepper jam, fried green tomatoes, sweet dill pickles, sauerkraut for a crowd, corn fritters, and creamed celery. Like the resourceful women who tend them, each garden has its own personality and beauty.

Schiffer Publishing Ltd The Art of Metal: Five Decades of Heavy Metal Album Covers, Posters, T-shirts, and More
Let’s face it, without the larger-than-life character and imagination of the art that complements it, metal just wouldn’t have had the same impact. From the colorful, outlandish, yet sophisticated use of visuals for album artwork and posters, to the immediately recognizable logos of such bands as Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Motörhead, Metallica, Slayer, and a host of others across many subgenres, there’s a close-knit relationship between the riffs that thunder from the guitar and the images that have come to represent the songs, anthems, and sheer nature of the beast. Does any other form of music immediately conjure up such evocative and distinctive images as the mere mention of the term "heavy metal" does? The answer is simple: no! From its inception in the 1960s through to today’s giants, the art has been closely connected to the music. Every classic album brings to mind a readily identifiable album cover. Each great band has an immediately identifiable logo. All of the landmark gigs have a poster that quintessentially depicts the time, place, and passion of the event. It’s all developed so far along the road that, today, the art that has been used to illustrate the music now stands on its own. There are exhibitions of the finest examples created by the truly outstanding artists. These works are collectible in their own right. What might have begun as a way of packaging metal has taken on a life of its own—moreover, it’s even possible to trace the way the genre itself has evolved, and changed, by looking at its art. This book explores the ways in which the art has helped define each of the crucial subgenres that make up the multifaceted and colorful centipede that is metal.

Schiffer Publishing Ltd Spring Is for Strawberries
There’s nothing like the sounds and smells of the first farmers market of the year. The sweetness of fresh fruits and local vegetables permeates the air and breathes new life into our recipes just as the spring brings new life to the earth. This illustrated tale follows the budding friendship between two girls who meet at their local farmers market and reminds us that food is the great unifier of all humankind. When a farm family brings their spring crops to a city farmers market, the farmer’s daughter befriends the daughter of a neighborhood family doing their weekly shopping. Over the course of a year, the girls explore the bounty of each season. Sweet spring strawberries and crisp, fresh greens make way for corn on the cob, peppers, and a rainbow of tomatoes. Fall brings pumpkin patches and the crunch of apples. The friends part at the final winter market, already looking forward to the sweet red strawberries that will unite them again next spring. Katherine Pryor’s lyrical celebration of seasonal local foods is brought to life by Polina Gortman’s portrait of a growing friendship between two children from seemingly different worlds. Spring Is for Strawberries reminds us to seek pleasure in the changing harvests around us, and that all things—even friendships—have seasons worth waiting for.

Schiffer Publishing Ltd Tac Recon: US Air Force Tactical Reconnaissance Combat Operations from WWI to the Gulf War
This book examines the American Air Force aircrews who flew tactical reconnaissance combat missions from World War I to the Gulf War. The book employs primary-source interviews, unit histories, mission documents, declassified operational studies, and photos to tell their stories. In the first half of the 20th century, they flew armed and defended themselves against enemy aircraft. In the latter half of the 20th century, they flew “unarmed and unafraid” against MiG fighters and some of the most intense antiaircraft defenses in history. Many returned with photographs that helped pave the way for bombing assessments and army ground operations. Others never returned, and some have never been found. The author personally interviewed reconnaissance pilots who flew in WWII, Korea, the Cuban Missile Crisis, and Vietnam in order to place the reader into the cockpit. Aviation buffs and general readers alike will find this a riveting story of grit and courage.
