Salamander Street Limited Chatsky & Miser, Miser! Two Plays by Anthony Burgess
Anthony Burgess was an energetic writer and composer, whose work for the stage is widely admired. In Two Plays, we see him tackling major monuments of French and Russian theatre: The Miser by Molière and Chatsky by Alexander Griboyedov. Miser, Miser! is a bold reworking of Molière’s classic comedy of 1668. Harpagon the miser is hoarding a pile of gold, which he has buried in his garden. As he tries to sell off his daughter, catch himself a beautiful young bride and outwit his scheming household of clever servants, the comedy of errors intensifies. Although the original French play is written in prose, Burgess remakes it in a mixture of verse and prose, in the style of his famous adaptation of Cyrano de Bergerac. This translation, discovered in the author’s archive, is the work of a writer at the height of his powers, reinventing Molière for modern audiences. Chatsky, subtitled ‘The Importance of Being Stupid’ is another verse comedy. The theme is that of the intellectual hero who rebels against the smug, philistine society in which he finds himself. First performed in 1833, Griboyedov’s play was so heavily cut by Russian censors that it was barely recognisable. The play is a virtuoso vehicle for male actors, and the source of many famous quotations. It is also notoriously difficult to translate. In Chatsky, Burgess remakes a classic Russian play in the spirit of Oscar Wilde. It is a great feast of language and invective. The complete texts of both plays are published here for the first time. Two Plays confirms Anthony Burgess’s reputation as a gifted writer for the stage, and as a translator of great wit and sophistication. MISER, MISER! Springer International Publishing AG VLADIMIR I. ARNOLD—Collected Works: Dynamics, Combinatorics, and Invariants of Knots, Curves, and Wave Fronts 1992–1995
This volume 6 of the Collected Works comprises 27 papers by V.I.Arnold, one of the most outstanding mathematicians of all times, written in 1991 to 1995. During this period Arnold's interests covered Vassiliev’s theory of invariants and knots, invariants and bifurcations of plane curves, combinatorics of Bernoulli, Euler and Springer numbers, geometry of wave fronts, the Berry phase and quantum Hall effect. The articles include a list of problems in dynamical systems, a discussion of the problem of (in)solvability of equations, papers on symplectic geometry of caustics and contact geometry of wave fronts, comments on problems of A.D.Sakharov, as well as a rather unusual paper on projective topology. The interested reader will certainly enjoy Arnold’s 1994 paper on mathematical problems in physics with the opening by-now famous phrase “Mathematics is the name for those domains of theoretical physics that are temporarily unfashionable.” The book will be of interest to the wide audience from college students to professionals in mathematics or physics and in the history of science. The volume also includes translations of two interviews given by Arnold to the French and Spanish media. One can see how worried he was about the fate of Russian and world mathematics and science in general.

Apple Academic Press Inc. Nanostructured Semiconductors in Porous Alumina Matrices: Modeling, Synthesis, and Properties
This book, Nanostructured Semiconductors in Porous Alumina Matrices: Modeling, Synthesis, and Properties, explores new developments in the modeling, synthesis, and properties of functional semiconductor nanostructures in porous anodic alumina matrices. The book focuses on luminescent nanoparticles in organic and inorganic dielectric matrixes, specifically in porous alumina films, as these are most relevant due to their capacity for particle division and ability to provide environmental protection. With a particular emphasis on experimental and theoretical studies of the synthesis processes, the book informs readers about these nanostructures through rigorous investigation of their properties. The book, which is divided into ten chapters, begins with a discussion of the existing literature on nanostructural electroluminescent light sources (ELS). This overview establishes a foundation for the remaining nine chapters, which explore in depth many facets of nanostructured materials: their composition, processes they undergo, how they may be implemented, etc. Within these chapters, experimental studies and results are incorporated, in addition to detailed descriptions of simulations that highlight different uses of these materials.

Schiffer Publishing Ltd Play Ball!: Doughboys and Baseball during the Great War
Baseball is the most American game. No other sporting contest so closely reflects the American psyche and culture. Its uniqueness comes from the fact that part of the game is clearly defined and unchanged since play first began, while another part of the game fluctuates and changes constantly. And if baseball is the truest American game, the Doughboys of the Great War were its most loyal proponents. By 1918, there were over four million of them: two million in France fighting in the Meuse-Argonne Offensive and another two million in stateside training camps awaiting their turn to cross the Atlantic to the Western Front. Playing wherever they could find enough room to throw a ball, they brought the game with them into the front lines and then into the occupation of Germany. Sharing their military service, in combat and on the baseball diamond, were a number of famous professional ballplayers, managers, lawyers, politicians, and even an umpire.

Cornell University Press An Introduction to U.S. Collective Bargaining and Labor Relations
This comprehensive textbook provides an introduction to collective bargaining and labor relations with a focus on developments in the United States. It is appropriate for students, policy analysts, and labor relations professionals including unionists, managers, and neutrals. A three-tiered strategic choice framework unifies the text, and the authors’ thorough grounding in labor history and labor law assists students in learning the basics. In addition to traditional labor relations, the authors address emerging forms of collective representation and movements that address income inequality in novel ways. Harry C. Katz, Thomas A. Kochan, and Alexander J. S. Colvin provide numerous contemporary illustrations of business and union strategies. They consider the processes of contract negotiation and contract administration with frequent comparisons to nonunion practices and developments, and a full chapter is devoted to special aspects of the public sector. An Introduction to U.S. Collective Bargaining and Labor Relations has an international scope, covering labor rights issues associated with the global supply chain as well as the growing influence of NGOs and cross-national unionism. The authors also compare how labor relations systems in Germany, Japan, China, India, Brazil, and South Africa compare to practices in the United States. The textbook is supplemented by a website (ilr.cornell.edu/scheinman-institute) that features an extensive Instructor’s Manual with a test bank, PowerPoint chapter outlines, mock bargaining exercises, organizing cases, grievance cases, and classroom-ready current events materials.

Cornell University Press Labor Relations in a Globalizing World
Compelled by the extent to which globalization has changed the nature of labor relations, Harry C. Katz, Thomas A. Kochan, and Alexander J. S. Colvin give us the first textbook to focus on the workplace outcomes of the production of goods and services in emerging countries. In Labor Relations in a Globalizing World, they draw lessons from the United States and other advanced industrial countries to provide a menu of options for management, labor, and government leaders in emerging countries. They include discussions based in countries such as China, Brazil, India, and South Africa which, given the advanced levels of economic development they have already achieved, are often described as "transitional," because the labor relations practices and procedures used in those countries are still in a state of flux.Katz, Kochan, and Colvin analyze how labor relations functions in emerging countries in a manner that is useful to practitioners, policymakers, and academics. They take account of the fact that labor relations are much more politicized in emerging countries than in advanced industrialized countries. They also address the traditional role played by state-dominated unions in emerging countries and the recent increased importance of independent unions that have emerged as alternatives. These independent unions tend to promote firm- or workplace-level collective bargaining in contrast to the more traditional top-down systems. Katz, Kochan, and Colvin explain how multinational corporations, nongovernmental organizations, and other groups that act across national borders increasingly influence work and employment outcomes.

Prestel Outstanding: The Relief from Classicism to the 1960s
The relief and its significance for modernism. The relief is a form of the visual arts situated between painting and sculpture a hybrid between two- and threedimensional expression that emancipates itself from the surface even as it remains confined to the same. The publication will explore the various manifestations of the relief over a span of more than a century and a half, from 1800 until into the 1960s, during which the medium took on ever greater importance for artists and theorists alike. Whereas in the nineteenth century classical methods of three-dimensional composition and sculptural invention still dominated the production of reliefs, the spectrum broadened in the twentieth to encompass widely differing materials, techniques, and their combinations. The 'construction' of reliefs in the form of collages and assemblages became an outlet for a new conception of space that was not averse to penetrating-or even dissolving-the support surfaces. Artists such as Berthel Thorvaldsen, Paul Gauguin, August Rodin, Henri Matisse, Alexander Archipenko, Pablo Picasso, Sophie Taeuber-Arp, or Gerhard Richter and their works are presented. AUTHOR: Alexander Eiling was Curator at the Staatliche Kunsthalle Karlsruhe, Germany, until 2017. He is Curator and Head of Modern Art at the Stadel Museum in Frankfurt am Main, Germany, since 2018. 280 colour illustrations
