Birkhauser Frauen Bauen Stadt: The City Through a Female Lens

Birkhauser City, Climate, and Architecture: A Theory of Collective Practice
The publication rethinks climate control – a key concern of the discipline of architecture – through the lens of city climate phenomena over the course of the 20th century. Based on a history of climate control on urban scales, it promotes the integration of indoors and outdoors in order to reduce environmental and thermal loads in cities. Just as heating and cooling practices inside the buildings are affecting the (urban) climate outdoors, urban heat islands are influencing the energy requirements and thermal conditions inside the buildings. While the first part of the book focuses on the interwar period in Europe, the publication’s second part considers examples from all over the globe, tracing the growing significance of ecological thinking for the design of urban environments.

Birkhauser Play Among Books: A Symposium on Architecture and Information Spelt in Atom-Letters
How does coding change the way we think about architecture? This question opens up an important research perspective. In this book, Miro Roman and his AI Alice_ch3n81 develop a playful scenario in which they propose coding as the new literacy of information. They convey knowledge in the form of a project model that links the fields of architecture and information through two interwoven narrative strands in an “infinite flow” of real books. Focusing on the intersection of information technology and architectural formulation, the authors create an evolving intellectual reflection on digital architecture and computer science.

Birkhauser WerteWandel: Prozesse, Strategien und Konflikte in der gebauten Umwelt
Within the architectural design, planning, and construction processes, new valuations and revaluations are constantly taking place. Every decision is made based on existing reference values, even if the respective action is future-oriented and geared towards the creation of the new. At the same time, the preservation or further development of building structures is based on traditional thought patterns and continuously internalized value systems. This means that values are never static, even in building, but are subject to a process. This interdisciplinary volume focuses on processes of value appropriation, value internalization, and value formation. These processes are illustrated using selected examples from the history of building and planning from modern times to the present.

Birkhauser Extended Urbanisation: Tracing Planetary Struggles
Extended methods of analysis for urbanisation processes illustrated in eight world regions. Urbanisation processes are unfolding far beyond the realm of agglomerations, profoundly transforming agrarian areas, rain forests, deserts and oceans. Inextricably bound to the earth’s ecologies, these developments are causing manifold planetary crises which require urgent scrutiny and call for new conceptions and cartographies of the urban beyond-the-city. Through detailed analysis and fieldwork captured in text, photographs and hand-drawn maps, the book portrays the effects of extended urbanisation in eight world regions. It offers a redefinition of the very notions of the “city”, “urban” and “urbanisation” and outlines new urban agendas developed to address planetary challenges. This book decenters the perspective on the urban, foregrounds urban struggle, and transcends rural-urban and north-south divides.

Birkhauser 225 Farben / 225 Colors: Eine Auswahl für Maler und Denkmalpfleger, Architekten und Gestalter / A Selection for Painters and Conservators, Architects and Designers
Dealing with color is a complex topic: influenced by standards, fashions, and trends, we derive our ideas and concepts from color theories, intuition, and personal preferences. Most color classification systems available today are based on purely quantitative principles and include well over 1,500 colors. So how do we choose a particular color? Building on the success of the first edition, Katrin Trautwein presents a revised selection of 225 colors: new ones that develop a special beauty in the LED-light replaced some previous colors. Each color is presented with a handmade paint sample. Information on each color’s composition and origin is provided, and the features that distinguish it for architecture and design work are described.

Birkhauser Konstruktion: Manual
People involved in architecture need to be familiar with construction methods in order to be in control of their designs. New technical requirements impact on our buildings and call for up-to-date specialist knowledge, which leads to new forms of architecture. This handbook uses clearly comprehensible 3D isometric diagrams to introduce the world of contemporary construction, from concept through to the detail; photographs are used to illustrate the content. The three main chapters deal with the structure, the building envelope, and the fit-out, starting with a clear introduction to the construction principles of modern building methods. Using drawings of selected built examples at scales of 1:10 and 1:20, a deeper examination of details is possible.

Birkhauser Vom Wert des Weiterbauens: Konstruktive Lösungen und kulturgeschichtliche Zusammenhänge
Transformation instead of demolition and new construction, continuing development instead of rupture: the principle of continuing the building process as an antidote to the modernist new-build paradigm is increasingly moving into focus in architecture and construction technology. It understands a building not so much as a product to be completed, but as a continuing process; it focuses on the continuity of places and buildings and poses new questions as to their completeness and authentic authorship, their durability and sustainability. The volume focuses on the technical and artistic processes of conversion and adaptation, as well as on the changing values and interpretation patterns of society that are expressed in the new orientation of existing buildings by the continuation of the construction process.

Birkhauser Impact: The effect of climate change on coastlines
The rise in sea level is a visible and remorseless indicator of global warming, the consequences of which can be experienced worldwide – in contrast to other effects of climate change that are not yet noticeable at a larger scale. The book illustrates, in an impressive way, the ecological, commercial, and social impact associated with the rise in sea levels, taking the examples of the American East Coast and the Gulf of Mexico: the author has documented this region from his Cessna between 2005 and 2018 using large-format aerial photography. The pictures illustrate the different conditions of the areas documented at different times of the year, before and after major weather events, and thereby provide evidence of how dramatically the geography and landscape are altered due to climate change.

Birkhauser Bauen mit Papier: Architektur und Konstruktion
Paper and cardboard as sustainable building materials are currently the subject of research and testing in building practice. They can be produced inexpensively, are made from renewable raw materials and are completely recyclable. The focus of its application is for temporary uses, such as in transitional buildings for schools, emergency shelters or "microhomes". Properly protected from moisture and fire, the material proves to be strong and durable. Design and aesthetic qualities are by no means neglected, as case studies by Pritzker Prize winner Shigeru Ban demonstrate: the Chengdu Elementary School, the Paper Concert Hall in Aquila or the Cardboard Cathedral in Christchurch all provided a sign of hope after devastating earthquakes. This introduction explains the basics and the technology of building with cardboard and paper and shows a wide range of exciting examples.

Birkhauser Holzbau mit System: Tragkonstruktion und Schichtaufbau der Bauteile
Timber construction has become completely modernized. It has gained considerably in market share with respect to competing building materials and is dominated by systems such as frame and solid timber construction. Every timber construction is determined by its structure. Hence it is essential to know the connections and relationships from the design stage right through to the construction phase. Systems in Timber Engineering takes a whole new approach to this subject. It is a comprehensive, analytical, and visually organized treatment, from the simple single-family house to the large-scale multistore structure. It includes the building envelope, which is so important for saving energy, and systems for ceilings and interior dividing walls, which are so essential from the vantage point of construction. This work uses plans, schematic drawings, and pictures to show the current and forward-looking state of the technology as applied in Switzerland, a leading country in the field of timber construction.

Birkhauser Building Better - Less - Different: Circular Construction and Circular Economy: Fundamentals, Case Studies, Strategies
Sustainability is to become the guiding principle of social action and economic activity. At the same time, its ways and means are far from clear. As a holistic praxis, sustainability must combine technical and material as well as social, economic, ecological and also ethical strategies, which have multiple complex interactions and all too often also conflicting goals and priorities. In no other field can these be better observed, addressed and influenced than in architecture and building. Each volume of "Building Better – Less – Different" details two fundamental areas of sustainability and explores their specific dynamics and interactions. After introductory overviews, innovative methods and current developments are described and analysed in in-depth essays, international case studies and pointed commentaries. The sustainability criteria of efficiency ("better"), sufficiency ("less") and consistency ("different") form the framework for each book. The first volume presents concepts, methods and examples of circularity in construction and the economy. Urban mining and circular construction are two approaches to the challenges that architecture and urban design are facing, using techniques such as mono-material construction and design for disassembly, and tools such as materials passports and databases. The circular economy is not solely about recycling but encompasses a wide range of strategies from local community projects to new ownership and service models and steering mechanisms such as carbon fees and dividends.

Birkhauser Natural Communication: The Obstacle-Embracing Art of Abstract Gnomonics
In Natural Communication, the author criticizes the current paradigm of specific goal orientation in the complexity sciences and proposes an alternative that envisions a fundamental architectonics of communication. His model of "natural communication" encapsulates modern theoretical concepts from mathematics and physics, in particular category theory and quantum theory. From these fields it abstracts precise concepts such as to constitute a terminological basis for this theory which offers the opportunity to open up novel ways of thinking about complexity. The author is convinced that it is only possible to establish a continuity and coherence with contemporary thinking, especially with respect to complexity, through looking into the past.

Birkhauser A Little House
Villa le Lac, which was designated a World Heritage in 2016, was designed and built by Le Corbusier as Geneva lakeside home for his parents in 1925. Because of its spare arrangement of spaces, he referred to it as a “dwelling machine.” Even today it remains the modern prototype of the “small house” that fulfills all of the functions of a residence with a minimum of floor area and seamless transitions between spaces. For the first time, this book is appearing in three separate language editions, following the original edition in which Le Corbusier documented the history of the building: with photographs, sketches and a poetic text. Access to the original photographs allowed the quality of the illustrations in this edition to be improved significantly.

Birkhauser Can Design Change Society?: Project Bauhaus
In 2019 it will be the hundredth anniversary of the founding of the Bauhaus. Prompted by this occasion, with "project bauhaus" ARCH+ has undertaken a critical appraisal of the Bauhaus ideas: working for several years, an international group of experts from a wide range of disciplines has investigated the socio-political relevance and emancipatory potential of the Bauhaus – historically, for today, and for the future. How can design still become effective as a political project? What are the possibilities and problems encountered by universal design in the age of globalization? Can the emancipatory potential of technology still be activated in a digitalized world? The answers to these questions are published here for the first time for an international readership.

Birkhauser Cereal Drying Racks: Culture and Typology of Wood Buildings in Europe and East Asia
Following his seminal book Wood and Wood Joints, an essential reference on solid timber constructions for more than two decades, now in its third edition, Klaus Zwerger presents a study of the cultural history, construction and typology of a special building type: cereal drying racks. These structures were used to dry harvested crops in agrarian cultures all over the world and evolved over the centuries into buildings of great beauty that are as sophisticated and individual as they are functionally efficient. On countless expeditions, the author tracked down the remaining buildings, documenting and analyzing them in the context of their cultural and building history through detailed descriptions, line drawings and photographs, rendered in duotone, by the author.

Birkhauser Identity: New Commercial, Cultural and Mobility Architecture
The international and multidisciplinary practice GRAFT conceives of itself as a label for architecture, urban design, product design, and music. GRAFT calls itself a "hybrid office" and produces dynamic architectural designs for standard commissions; however, the architects also initiate their own projects and system solutions for tasks with a social, ecological, or esthetic emphasis. The book presents buildings by GRAFT in the fields of culture, offices, brand architecture, retail, and mobility. It contains about forty generously illustrated projects that document a wide range of work in which the respective corporate culture is incorporated in GRAFT’s sophisticated architectural language. Dialectic essays focus on the practice’s key themes, such as the debate on urban identity or mobility transition.

Birkhauser Luxury for All: Milestones in European Stepped Terrace Housing
The stepped terraced house is a type of building that meets modern housing requirements: it is economical and offers ample living space with the comfort of terrace and garden. Rising to popularity with the advent of new social movements it was forgotten with the progressive erosion of the new ideas of society and relegated them to obscurity or even to their disqualification as eyesores. Yet the enduring satisfaction of residents and ecological advantages of green houses make terraced housing as attractive as ever. The buildings studied in the book are not only architectural icons today; even today, one can still learn from them about what residential buildings need. One proponent of this building style was Harry Glück; part of his text pleading the case for a green city is printed here.

Birkhauser dada – digital architectural design assertion
The ongoing introduction of digital design tools in the architectural professional practice does not only influence the architectural design product, but equally affects the underlying design process. A digital design process taking full advantage of the potential of digital design tools is increasingly different from a paper & pencil based design development process. This publication shows how the digital architectural design tools alter the education process of future architects. The study assumes that the use of digital design and fabrication tools will require the architecture curriculum to adapt. It concludes by proposing to develop a new Digital Architectural Design Education model which differs significantly from the traditional paper & pencil pedagogical model.

Birkhauser Relations in Architecture: Writings and Buildings
The title of the book sets the two fields of activity pursued by the architect, architectural historian and theorist August Sarnitz – building and writing – in a reciprocal relation: the context to what has been built emerges in the process of writing, just as the context to what has been written emerges in the process of building. The structure of the book follows precisely this reciprocity: an essay about architectural history and Big Data is followed by three on the topics of urban development, social housing, and the fiction of space. A number of influential Viennese architects appear as well: Frank, Kiesler, Hollein and Prix. The topics of housing, design and furniture are all illustrated with Sarnitz’s own projects; the end of the book is dedicated to architectural photography, which is especially important to Sarnitz in his capacity as publicist. The richly illustrated book is the first to document Sarnitz’s work as author, designer, exhibition designer, architect and photographer.

From a watch to a pavilion, from urban furniture to infrastructure, from landscape design to apartment buildings: since the founding of Atelier Bonnet in the year 2000, the work of Pierre and Mireille Bonnet, covering a wide range of themes and scales, is conceived in a spirit of interaction and complicity. In the face of such a diversity of works, the monograph concentrates on a series of exemplary residential buildings, which document the skillful handling of this fundamental building task. In their most recent works, the architects have also occupied themselves intensively with the use of exposed concrete and with questions of tectonics. The resulting sculptural design and the abstract language of these objects provide further examples of a highly sensitive architecture, with an undeniable artistic dimension.

Birkhauser Modern Construction Case Studies: Emerging Innovation in Building Techniques
Modern Construction Case Studies focuses on the interface between the design of facades, structures and environments of 12 building projects, all developed by Newtecnic. The Author compares facade technologies, particularly in the way they interface with structure and MEP (mechanical, electrical, plumbing services) in complex projects, to provide insights into the design process for building envelopes. Each envelope technology is described with an emphasis on one of three aspects: geometry, construction and performance. The analysis links the 12 case studies by comparing their structural and environmental performance. The aim is achieved by analyzing typical bays which are representative of each project and which illustrate the implications of using different building envelope technologies.

Birkhauser The Good Metropolis: From Urban Formlessness to Metropolitan Architecture

Once the design has been completed, the architects prepare the tender documents for the contractors, and provide support during the tender procedure. For the purpose of commissioning various building works it is necessary to set up building contracts which contain standard content as well as very individual provisions. The building contract and its extensive drawings and specifications are the basis for the building work; they must be understood by the supervising architect and implemented to create the building. The complexity and diversity of building contracts is increased by the fact that there is hardly a building contract that does not have to be modified after it has been signed. Basics Building Contract offers the typical structures and explanations, as well as the tools for creating project-specific contracts and understanding the inherent complexity.
