He was a founder member of the Communist Party, and one of the twelve Communist leaders gaoled for ''sedition'' in 1925. He edited the \u003ci\u003eWorker''s Weekly\u003c\/i\u003e, helped launch the \u003ci\u003eDaily Worker\u003c\/i\u003e and was one of the first editors of \u003ci\u003eLeft Review\u003c\/i\u003e. Expelled in 1938 from the Communist Party, Wintringham co-founded the Commonwealth Party and almost won a famous war-time by-election.
