In the last days of the war he made a dramatic escape to Paris and attended the Paris Peace Conference as a representative of nationalist groups in Poland. After the war he returned to Poland to help organize the YMCA movement and was very active in other social work. He took his doctorate in 1926 at Cracow University.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eBy 1928, when he returned to North America to teach, he was a well-known specialist on Poland. He began teaching at Dartmouth College, NH, and in 1935 was invited to the University of London’s School of Slavonic Studies, which he headed from 1939 to 1950.
