The youngest child of a large working-class Catholic family, he was born in Kensington, Liverpool on 10th November 1945.  After leaving school at 16, he worked as a clerk in a shipping office and a book-keeper in an accountancy firm for ten years. During this time he gained amateur acting experience, winning the LAMDA Gold Medal and first prize in the National Arts Awards. In 1973 Terence left Liverpool to go to drama school in Coventry, where he wrote the screen play for \u003ci\u003eChildren\u003c\/i\u003e, which would become the first instalment of \u003ci\u003eThe Trilogy\u003c\/i\u003e. He went on to write and direct nine feature films - \u003ci\u003eDistant Voice Still Lives\u003c\/i\u003e, \u003ci\u003eThe Long Day Closes\u003c\/i\u003e, \u003ci\u003eThe Neon Bible\u003c\/i\u003e, \u003ci\u003eThe House of Mirth\u003c\/i\u003e, \u003ci\u003eOf Time and the City\u003c\/i\u003e, \u003ci\u003eThe Deep Blue Sea\u003c\/i\u003e, \u003ci\u003eSunset Song\u003c\/i\u003e, \u003ci\u003eA Quiet Passion\u003c\/i\u003e, and \u003ci\u003eBenediction\u003c\/i\u003e.  His final script, an adaptation of Janette Jenkins' novel \u003ci\u003eFirefly\u003c\/i\u003e, which retells the last five days of the life of Noel Coward, is currently in development.
