It did not officially appear until 1984. Despite the ban, and despite ongoing censorship, Jourdan continues to write novels, short stories and plays. His many books include the ‘trilogy’ \u003ci\u003eCharité\u003c\/i\u003e, \u003ci\u003eRévolte\u003c\/i\u003e and \u003ci\u003eSang\u003c\/i\u003e, and other equally uninhibited texts such as \u003ci\u003eLe Garçon de joie\u003c\/i\u003e, \u003ci\u003eAux gémonies \u003c\/i\u003eand \u003ci\u003eLe Jeune soldat\u003c\/i\u003e. More recent publications include short stories, historical novels (\u003ci\u003eSans lois ni dieux\u003c\/i\u003e, \u003ci\u003eLieutenant Darmancour\u003c\/i\u003e) and the more autobiographical text \u003ci\u003eTrois cœurs\u003c\/i\u003e.\u003cbr\u003e This study charts Jourdan’s writing career from \u003ci\u003eLes Mauvais anges\u003c\/i\u003e to the present day, situating his work in the context of writers from Peyrefitte and Montherlant to Guibert, Dustan and Guyotat. The analysis concentrates on three main themes: boyhood and masculinity; sex and (homo)sexuality; and violence and death. Throughout, a number of questions are paramount. What is the connection between masculinity and violence? How does Jourdan reconcile \u003ci\u003ejoie de vivre\u003c\/i\u003e with pain and punishment? Do his young male protagonists progress from bad boys to new men? In what ways can his texts be seen as homoerotic, homosexual, gay or queer?
