    Out of stock

Book SynopsisPorsche and motorsport always belonged together – so you would think. But in fact, private owners were the first to be successful with their 356s on the racing tracks. The Porsche 550 Spyder from the 1950s was the first racing car manufactured at the plant – and achieved great successes right from the beginning! Motorsport not only gave Porsche the opportunity to test progressive technology that could be transferred to roadsters, it also was the ideal marketing tool with an enormous influence. Looking back at models like the Porsche 917, 904 and 956, successful serial winners and racing legends emerged from that. Just as legendary are René Staud’s Porsche photos. As one of the best and most famous automobile photographers in the world, he staged the top-class sports cars in a way so far unmatched. Beyond the racing track’s noise and dirt, the Porsche models unfold their unique magic and show the tough developmental work behind them as well as the timelessness of functional design. Book SynopsisWhen it first appeared in 1992, Honda's CBR900RR FireBlade was a revelation. Light, agile and powerful, it broke the 750cc sportsbike mould with its 893cc engine and established the FireBlade legend. Over the next three decades more than half a million FireBlades and Fireblades would be sold, making it one of the most successful and recognisable motorcycles on the planet. Aside from sales success, it has achieved phenomenal sporting success too - particularly in road races such as the Isle of Man TT.The latest model, the 2022 CBR1000RR-R Fireblade, is a natural evolution of the type and a worthy successor to the FireBlades of old. It represents the peak of sportsbike innovation and development today - just as the CBR900RR did back in 1992.In this fully-illustrated 132-page publication, Classic Motorcycle Mechanics editor and Fireblade fanatic Bertie Simmonds tells the complete story of this iconic model.

  • A Pilgrim's Guide to the Camino Sanabrés & Camino

Kaminn Media Ltd A Pilgrim's Guide to the Camino Sanabrés & Camino

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisThis guidebook combines two ancient routes into Santiago that remain largely undiscovered despite their historic significance. Each route offers a very different camino experience but are combined in one volume as they join in A Laxe for the final stages. Each provides the minimum distance required for a pilgrim to apply for a Compostela; but that is not the purpose of this guidebook which seeks to off er alternatives to the busy routes through Sarria and Tui which account for over 80% of all pilgrims to Santiago; by contrast the Camino Invierno currently carries less than 1%. Camino Sanabrés offers a link from the Via de le Plata. This guide offers the last 5 stages of that itinerary commencing in Ourense with its rich Roman heritage and extant thermal baths. Excellent rail and road links make the city highly accessible for pilgrims wishing to commence their journey from this point. The acorn would be a fitting symbol for this route that winds its way through ancient oak forest past the Pico Santo into Santiago. Camino Invierno provides a link from the Camino Francés and a wonderful alternative to the routes through Sarria which carry such a large volume of pilgrims. The 'Winter Way' is a camino in its own right as it snakes its way through the mystery of Las Médulas, the largest gold mines in the Roman Empire and now a World Heritage Site (see cover photo). It continues along the sacred banks of the río Sil, the incomparable Ribeira Sacra with its vineyards and chestnut forests. Its remote location and limited facilities make this a demanding route, well suited for the seasoned pilgrim with an adventurous spirit, seeking a quieter way. This guidebook also seeks to find a balance between the outer and inner journey, between the physical and spiritual, which is why it is subtitled A Practical & Mystical Manual - that we might find a place to eat and sleep at the end of a hard day's walk but also, and crucially, that we might find the courage to dive into the mystery of our own soul awakening.

  • The Magnetism of Antarctica: The Ross Expedition

Whittles Publishing The Magnetism of Antarctica: The Ross Expedition

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThis under-documented expedition was a pivotal moment in the annals of polar exploration and was the starting point, in historical terms, of revealing the great unknown continent of Antarctica. It was the first time in nearly 70 years since Captain James Cook had circumnavigated Antarctica, that a Royal Naval voyage of discovery had ventured so far South. They set a new 'furthest south' record in the process beating the one set up by James Weddell in a whaling ship in 1823. The expedition set sail from Greenwich in 1839. It consisted of two wooden sailing ships commanded by Captain James Clark Ross and Commander Francis Crozier. The ships were manned exclusively by Royal Naval personnel and each ship had a complement of 64 men and officers. Their primary task was of a scientific nature to study the Earth's magnetic field and build up a set of results that could provide a greater understanding of the effects of magnetism on compasses and their use in navigating the world's oceans. This voyage had a set of planned targets and all were accomplished. In the process a vast amount of scientific information was collected. Many exotic places were visited during the voyage amongst them Madeira, St Helena, Cape Town, Kerguelen island, New Zealand, Australia and the Falkland Islands but the pinnacle was the discovery of the Ross Sea, The Ross Ice Shelf and the mighty volcanoes of Erebus and Terror (named after the two ships). The crews experienced the dangers of navigating in ice-strewn waters and narrowly escaping being crushed by icebergs. Illness was kept at bay although several lives were lost due to accidents. It would be another 60 years before the scenes of their greatest discoveries were visited again and then the Golden Age of Discovery was ushered in with the likes of Scott, Shackleton and Amundsen.Table of ContentsPart 1 - The Expedition. In the Beginning; Targets and instructions; James Clark Ross and Francis Crozier; Setting sail to Madeira and the Atlantic Islands; Cape Town and beyond; Next stop - Hobart, Tasmania; First taste of the ice; Amazing discoveries and wonders to behold; Turning North; South again to the Great Ice Barrier; Impending Disaster; Wild cattle hunt and a third winter away; Return to the Antarctic. • Inn Search of Birds: Pubs, People and Places

Whittles Publishing Inn Search of Birds: Pubs, People and Places

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisMost birders keep lists of the species birds they have seen, but do any keep a list of pub birds, that is birds on pub signs and in pub names? This book is about these pub birds, their natural histories, folk-histories and those of the pubs that bear their names, some of the people involved in the story, and the memories that pub birds have evoked over a birding lifetime. This may appear to be a niche aspect of birding but before the advent of modern technology, pubs in 'good birding spots' were often the best place to find out from other birders "What's about?", preferably over a pint. On the eastern edge of the Yorkshire Dales at the entrance to Wensleydale, are four pubs all named after Black Swans within a five-mile radius. Intriguing, but why there? They sparked John Lawton's interest in pub birds and the list that began then spans eleven years, based on a sample of 711 pubs named after birds or things that are 'bird-related'. There are 117 identifiable species of birds, 17 non-specific birds (for example duck), and four mythical species, plus 35 pubs named after bird-related things. Technical stuff aside, pub birds are fun. Whilst being as accurate and informative as possible, this book is not meant to be too serious. Whilst 'plain vanilla' swans get boring, the 'Swan and Cemetery' (in Bury), the 'Swan and Railway' (in Wigan) and three pubs called 'The Swan with Two Necks' (in Bristol, Clitheroe and Wakefield) cry out for an explanation. As do two Welsh pubs both called 'The Goose and Cuckoo' in Llanover (Monmouthshire) and Llangadog (Carmarthenshire). The resulting aviary of 117 species doesn't quite range from A to Z, but the list does run from 'The Blackbird' on Earls Court Road in London to a 'Yellow Wagtail' in Yeovil. The book covers the commonest pub birds, why they are so named, their geography and history, and also pub birds in art, literature and music. There is even a short chapter on nests, babies, feathers and bird paraphernalia. Throughout, the author has woven some of his fondest memories of pub birds into the story and from time-to-time he may even have gone into the pub for a pint.

  • Snowdonia Slate Trail (2 ed)

Rucksack Readers Snowdonia Slate Trail (2 ed)

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisThe Snowdonia Slate Trail is a waymarked trail that runs for 83 miles from Bangor on the North Wales coast, making a circuit through the heart of Snowdonia to end at Bethesda. The trail joins up villages with a choice of welcoming accommodation. The walking is varied, ranging from easy valleys to mountain passes, from wild moorland to river gorges. Highlights include the National Slate Museum of Wales, stunning views of Snowdon and nearby mountains, and abandoned slate villages high in the hills. The trail also passes the Penrhyn quarry with its impressive galleries of slate crossed by the longest, fastest zip-wire in Europe. This guidebook is in rucksack-friendly format and printed on rainproof paper. Lavishly illustrated with 95 colour photos, it contains large-scale mapping and all you need to plan and enjoy your holiday: 14 pages with clear mapping of the route at 1: 40,000 practical information about public transport and travel section with inside knowledge on how best to climb Snowdon detailed route descriptions including where to find refreshments and accommodation background on the slate industry heritage, the ‘Great Little Trains of Wales’ and wildlife. Trade ReviewI was very impressed with the Snowdonia Slate Trail guide. The design has been very well thought out: physically it is a convenient size ... printed on rainproof paper, is spiral bound for ease of use when on the trail and the cover is slightly larger than the rest of the book and has a folded part which, when not in use as a bookmark, has a useful map key and a table showing where there are pubs, cafes, B&Bs etc along the way. There is plenty to read about the slate industry, Snowdonia, the Great Little Trains of Wales and habitats and wildlife; these are in their own sections and sensibly kept separate from the directions of how to get from one place to another. -- Alan Brown * Compass Sport *

Book SynopsisAfter eight years living in Copenhagen, an English journalist, driven by a passion for languages and mountains, finally rebels. With little more than an assortment of Earl Grey teabags, Danish candles and a map, Georgina Howard abandons her all-too-cosy, cinnamon-scented lifestyle and drives south. The journey leads to wild and craggy landscapes in the Basque Pyrenees on the French/Spanish border, where place names are written in a bizarre, foreign tongue full of ''x''s and ''z''s. Losing her heart to this beautiful land and her pride to the inscrutability of the language, Howard moves into an isolated barn in a mountain hamlet. While pagan festivals reverberate through the valleys, her Basque neighbours - farmers, shepherds, a gravedigger and a champion female lumberjack - observe her, bemused. Only when her daughter, Marion, is born - after an unsuccessful relationship with an eccentric Basque miller - do Howard''s neighbours drop their reserve and welcome her into their homes. Taking
