Avoiding a book that is too cumbersome, we have tried to make this volume readable and enjoyable, using various techniques to help the reader remember key facts: the text has been deliberately written in a tutorial-like story format as opposed to a set of lists, since this makes it easier to understand and remember. In addition to general surgery, the book contains sections on trauma, orthopaedics, urology and ENT, making it the only comprehensive textbook for medical students wishing to learn top tips in surgery.Subjects that are poorly covered in other main texts — such as fluid balance management and minor surgical procedures — are dealt with in a tutorial fashion in this book, and there is a section on how to problem-solve even in the context of areas unknown to the student. This book is useful for medical students and also for junior doctors during their day-to-day working lives, as well as those coming up to postgraduate exams. Each chapter is written by an authoritative author, alongside the book editors, and they have ensured it remains in the spirit of the bestselling previous editions.

Table of Contents
Surgical Talk; Fluid Balance and Nutrition; Pre- and Post-Operative Management; Trauma, Shock, Head Injury, Burns; Hepatobiliary and Pancreas; Upper GI; Small Intestine and Colon; Rectum/Anus; Acute Abdomen; Breast; Lumps in Head, Neck and Skin; Hernias; Vascular Disease; Urology; Orthopaedics; ENT; Mock Questions.
Book Synopsis
Since its publication, about four years ago, the best-seller, "Aphorisms & Quotations for the Surgeon", has found its place in surgeons' personal and public libraries. At the time, this represented a review of cutting-edge new technologies that were being introduced within the field of flexible endoscopy. Largely based on applications and data up to 2013, this served as a unique resource for clinicians and researchers to learn about this expanding field.
Since then, there has been a significant expansion of new technologies and procedures within this discipline that have meaningfully changed this entire sub-specialty. In addition, large numbers of high-quality data have emerged that support more heartily the safety and efficacy of these techniques. Major international societies now routinely include hands-on training and scientific content of this field in meetings and educational efforts, and many trainees and practitioners are looking for resources to improve their knowledge and technical skills sets. For these reasons, an update on this rapidly advancing field seems appropriate at this time, given the enormous amount of new content available.
Endoscopic surgical procedures allow for less invasive access for performing increasingly complex procedures. This results in maximal benefit for patients with fewer complications, faster recovery, and less pain. Endoscopy allows access to the gastrointestinal tract without transgressing the abdominal or chest walls, by means of a truly less invasive route. These technologies and skills are being sought out by practitioners and asked for by patients.
The proposed textbook is designed to present a comprehensive and state-of the-art approach to the diverse applications of surgical techniques and procedures through the endoscopic platform. Written by experts and emerging specialists in that field, each of these sections will address patient selection, pre-operative considerations, technical conduct of the most common operations, and avoiding complications. A review of the existing literature addressing the particular topic will follow in each section. Extensive endoscopic images and illustrations will make this an interactive text. In addition to updates on most topics in the previous manual, this edition will include exciting new fields of advanced imaging, artificial intelligence and augmented imaging, applications of robotics to endoscopy, and more robust exposure of endoscopic applications for treatment of obesity, a worldwide epidemic.
The subject of surgical endoscopy has changed meaningfully since publication of the first edition; now a substantial focus of major journals, scientific meetings, and online platforms. There is an immense need for a comprehensive yet concise and easy-to-use book that has a clear structure and one that reflects new findings, methods and references that current surgical residents will find to be applicable.
The intentional structure of the book is simply this - capture the most pertinent information for each specialty that is on the SCORE® curriculum and frequently asked on the ABSITE exam and present it to the reader in a capsulized, simplified format of charts or tables. Hence, in addition to its study-friendly structure, this review book comprehensively mirrors most contemporary general surgery curricula. It also encompasses key operative steps of wider general surgery procedures, which most review books lack. Moreover, while most ABSITE review books are written by one or a few authors, each chapter in this book is reviewed/authored by someone with expertise in their specialty. The aim of this book is to provide a detailed technical guide for trauma surgery by two experienced surgical educators who are experts in the field. The original concept behind this text (compared to other operative surgery texts) is a special emphasis on intra-operative judgement, decision-making, and thought processes, as well as technical 'tips and tricks'. The book will be generously illustrated with black-and-white line drawings, but will NOT be a surgical atlas, because there will not be a step-by-step sequence of illustrations for each procedure. The illustrations will be incorporated into the text rather than appearing on separate pages. As such, the book will be an 'operative surgery' book, along the lines of such British classics as Peter Jones' 'Emergency Abdominal Surgery', Hugh Dudley's editions of 'Hamilton Bailey's Emergency Surgery' and Keen's 'Operative Surgery and Management'.
Book Synopsis
Evgeniy Perelygin -- a surgeon who is known to his friends as Perya -- has managed to capture the funny, the amusing, and the ridiculous aspects of what surgeons do and think. Yes, surgeons take their profession very seriously and their patients even more so. But, what is true in any aspect of human life is also true for surgery -- there is always something to laugh about, or even ridicule. And this includes, above all, surgeons themselves! In each of these cartoons lurks the kernel of a basic surgical truth. This truth has been blown up, distorted, and exaggerated, but remains at the heart of the picture. Each picture has a legend describing the situation, which is followed by an aphorism, quote, or comment. This book is essentially for surgical eyes -- they are all cutting edge, and will have the reader in stitches. Readers may also wish to use the images to enliven PowerPoint lectures!
