The book explores the ways in which spinning and weaving has continued to be important throughout human history (or should that be herstory), in artistic, economic and functional terms. The second part of the book brings us up to date, via interviews with modern day spinning and weaving artisans. These textiles artists generously allowed the author a window into their studios and discussed the way they use and adapt traditional methods, techniques and tools for the twenty first century. Photos of their work, and their working environment offers a unique view into the world of this ancient craft. Many contemporary spinners view the hand spindle as a beginner’s tool, suited to learn the basic steps of spinning before moving on to a spinning wheel. In Respect the Spindle, Franquemont emphasizes the spindle's importance and use to make yarn in advanced ways for high-end to novelty cloth. In fact, the yarns and cloth made for thousands of years—Viking sails, Egyptian shrouds, Roman togas—all were created with the use of hand spindles. And, in other parts of the world, the spindle still reigns supreme, supplying astounding volumes of yarn for every purpose imaginable. The perfect how-to book for any spinner with a growing collection of spindles or even just a dowel, Respect the Spindle combines step-by-step photography with detailed illustrations, making the spindle spinning techniques clear to even the novice spinner. Franquemont teaches techniques from the basics, such as getting started on the spindle, to more specialized techniques, such as using the spindle to make specific kinds of yarn faster than imagined. Although specifically aimed at the rigid heddle loom, the 200 pages hold a wealth of information on weave structures and patterns that can be used on many looms. The spiral bound, textbook-style layout is good, with clear section separation, and the chapters take you up a hierarchy of difficulty. I felt comfortable with plain, finger-controlled and pick up weaves, then I marvelled in awe at sections on warp and weft-faced frabrics and working with two heddles. There is a nod to garment and item construction in the guise of a few set pieces, but the book's real strength is in opening a treasure chest of weaving possibility to new or relatively inexperienced weavers. Each section provides a soft kaleidoscope of samples which I have already been tempted to replicate. The book will doubtless remain a good source book to refer to for new creative ideas and inspiration. However, the book might give the absolute beginner a puzzle at times, as it is not always clear and sometimes repetitive. The book starts off with explaining iridescence, optics of light and color. The photographs help to interpret the results as well as give inspiration to your fiber choice, thread size and weave structure. Blue boxes highlight the information of the chapters. Bobbie touches on getting the most out of iridescence with sewing garments, spinning, dyeing and knitting. Then, she shows you how to achieve this technique using a loom that requires from 4 to 8 shafts. The projects include color gamp napkins, a double weave scarf in a 4 and 6 shaft version, 4 shaft scarves using 3 and 4 color effects, clasping, vest fabric in double-weave and lightweight huck yardage. She closes with a note on photography and the ins and outs of getting a good photograph of iridescent fabric. The photographs are well done and as I said before, lends them to motivate your creativeness. This is a one of a kind book to take your weaving and color appreciation to the next level. -- Paula Moliver
Twice in my weaving career, I've accidentally woven iridescent cloth. Both times, I chose a weft color based on a whim and ended up with magical, shimmering cloth. Bobbie Irwin, weaver and author of the aptly titled Weaving Iridescence, stumbled upon iridescence in a similar way. Her journey began, as great weaving discoveries often do, while sampling on the loom. Irwin decided to combine magenta with chartreuse, two colors she used frequently in her weaving with other colors but never together. The result was iridescent cloth and a desire to study this phenomenon, which is ultimately how this wonderful book came to be. Although Irwin is a master of all things iridescent, even those beyond cloth, she makes few assumptions about the knowledge of the reader. The earliest chapters in her book are all about education. She explains what iridescence is and how it relates to other "-escence" words such as opalescence and luminescence. The book also explores the nature of light and color, giving the reader a good foundation of knowledge on which to stand before getting to the meat of the subject at hand. The rest of the book is devoted to the subject of iridescence and how it works in weaving. Irwin teaches her readers the "rules" of iridescence (and how most of them can be broken) and how to choose colors, yarns, and weave structures to get this effect. She also, very interestingly, explains what iridescence isn't, giving examples of fabrics that are lustrous and often beautiful but not truly iridescent. The book ends with five projects designed to help the reader learn more about the nature of iridescence on the loom. Such a book cannot truly be successful without good photography--and lots of it. As beautiful as iridescence is, it's also notoriously difficult to capture on film, but photographer Reed Irwin did this spectacularly. The book is full of gorgeous fabrics that seem to shimmer even on the printed page. As Irwin mentions in her "Note on Photography" at the end of the book, this is no accident--she actually delayed writing the book until photo technology was developed that could adequately capture this phenomenon. She also gives plenty of tips and tricks for any amateur iridescence photographers out there. This book is a stunning work on a subject that has intrigued and delighted many a weaver throughout history. It is a must-have for any weaver who wants to harness the magic of iridescence. -- Christina Garton, Handwoven

Table of Contents
TABLE OF CONTENTS Acknowledgments Introduction Chapter 1: What is Iridescence? This information creates a solid foundation before they tackle some of the more advanced projects. The book has thirty useful and decorative projects. Included are scarves, mats, purses, pillows, shawls, and blankets. All can be personalized through the use of favorite colors or yarns to allow for individual creativity and expression. The small amulet bags, flowers & leaves, doll blanket, bracelets (and more) are sure to win a younger student's fancy. The items that require stitching together may need an experienced helping hand, but the instructions are very clear and easy to follow. The author adds many clever projects, such as the adorable cat pillow, the fox purse, the Blooming Backpack (featured on the book's cover) and many more, which take the reader far beyond the simple square! From simple to intermediate projects for children and adults, this will be a good resource for many years. Additional variations, like weaving on the bias or creating sculptural shapes, may help to inspire more advanced weavers to take a closer look at applying this technique to their work. Readers may be surprised with the discovery that the vintage pin loom projects have a place among contemporary textiles. --Jan Hewitt Towsley -- Shuttle, Spindle & Dyepot
Pin looms seem to be popping up everywhere these days. For weavers with limited room or a limited budget, or who want a more portable option for weaving, the pin loom is a wonderful choice. Of course, after weaving the first few squares, many weavers ask, "What do I do with all these bits?" If you're pin loom weaver extraordinaire Margaret Stump, the answer is, "Just about anything." In her latest book on pin-loom weaving, Stump shares her inspired designs for pieces woven on a variety of portable looms, including the standard 4" x 4" loom, a 2" x 2" pin loom, an adjustable fine-gauge knitting loom, and a potholder loom. Almost a third of the book focuses on tutorials. In addition to instructions for weaving with each type of loom, the book shows how to make a 2" x 2" loom and how to join woven pieces. I especially enjoyed the tutorial for weaving with yarn on a potholder loom. Anyone who enjoys weaving on the ubiquitous 4" x 4" loom will love the tutorials on bias weaving and weaving triangles. The triangle tutorial is particularly clever and opens up a whole new world of design possibilities with this simple loom. -- Christina Garton, Handwoven
Book Synopsis

Trade Review
This book with its overwhelming array of patterns is a bead weaver’s delight.
