It outlines a theological and practical model of 1-to-1 supervision, arguing that such an approach enables the development of greater attentiveness to God, the self and others and thus enhances accountability. It offers a poetic and deeply biblical invitation into a deeper relationship with God, self and other as part of the transforming work that God is doing through those called to minister. Writing out of her experience of 30 years as a Methodist minister and at the start of the British Methodist Church’s journey into mandatory supervision for its ordained ministers, Helen advocates the value of supervision in the maturation of those called into public ministry. She sees this process as one for which the body of Christ bears responsibility alongside the minister, offering a ‘shared agenda’ model of supervision that allows both the supervisee and the supervisor to bring issues for exploration. Kate Bruce argues that the day of the poorly conceived, ill prepared, dull, disconnected, boring, irrelevant, authoritarian, yawn-inducing, patronizing, pontificating, pointless and badly delivered sermon, is indeed over. Imagination can help to engage the hearer in a sermon which seeks to evoke rather than to inform. Imagination frames how we see the world and ourselves in it. As such it has a vital role in how preachers see the preaching task itself, which in turn affects how we go about the task. A theology of imagination is presented to demonstrate the central importance of imagination in the life of faith. Christian faith and theology are performed in the sacramental, communal, and missional life of the Church, and catechesis is an invitation into this lived reality. This book explores the nature of catechesis and how catechesis within our churches can shape the Christian community into an instrument of renewal in the world through the formation of holy living. It argues that the future of catechesis in the life of the Church is to be found in this holistic discipleship, and explores this holistic vision by examining catechesis in its relationship to Christian worship and liturgy, the teaching of doctrine, mission and social action, evangelism, preaching, communal life, and the sacraments.

Trade Review
"Catechesis embodies the central calling of the Christian community to pass on the faith – living it, teaching it, being enriched by it. However, youth ministry expert Andrew Root explains that this focus is central to Bonhoeffer''s story and thought. Root presents Bonhoeffer as the forefather and model of the growing theological turn in youth ministry. By linking contemporary youth workers with this epic theologian, the author shows the depth of youth ministry work and underscores its importance in the church. He also shows how Bonhoeffer''s life and thought impact present-day youth ministry practice.

Table of Contents
Contents

1. An honest, sincere, and real thought provoking book … you can only admire him for giving up all he had, and wanting more … which Gavin will tell you he has found.
-- Robbie Fowler (Former Liverpool & England International Footballer, Manager of Brisbane Roar)

Gavin’s story includes playing for some of the top managers in football including Harry Redknapp, Kevin Keegan, Ossie Ardiles and Glenn Hoddle. But for myself this book is about life itself, including religion, beliefs, the sacrifices you have to make to be or to do what you might want out of life itself. Making vital decisions under pressure that not only affect you but your whole family. About living your life at whatever level you are at, and making decisions along the road as best you can for yourself and the people you love. What’s important in life for the individual is so different and complex! From professional footballer to pundit to preacher is quite some journey. No Damascene moments, just a gradual and growing awareness of the power of faith, which is now central to his life. Despite being an agnostic I found his writing both moving and inspirational. A very good read.
-- Guillem Balague

This book is compelling, candid and clear. For those who love the beautiful game there is much here that will fascinate and inform you about what is involved in becoming and being a professional footballer. For those who are Christians there is much here to do the same and whole lot more. Is it possible to be a professional footballer and a committed Christian? What is involved in making it to the top of the professional game as a Christian? What is there after the final whistle and your career is over? All of this and more is addressed by Gavin Peacock in this book. Written with pathos, Gavin’s humble assessment of himself and generous evaluation of others in the football world coupled with his growing conviction about the most important things in life will cause you to laugh, cry and think.
